The Guardian have Will as one of 20 youngsters to watch in The Premiership. 18 year old CH who can play left back. Played 45 mins against Leipzig. Not seen him mentioned on here before. Anyone seen him play?

Not sure why they think that, as he is left footed. Used play on the left (both left back and a few occasions on the left of midfield) but the club are now using him as a left sided centre back.

Always been impressed when I've seen him , great reading of the game

Will Wood or MLG?

Wood played in the u21 League Cup Final IIRC, seemed to go about his business without attracting the attention of his partner that day, which is often a good sign. He also was on the tour to Austria I think (MLG will put me right if I am wrong no doubt) but not in the training pics of the first team squad yesterday.

I can't imagine Saints are going to hazard an untried CB who isn't clearly the greatest thing we've ever seen already in the youth team. There's just far too much risk involved. This is just the Guardian looking for a position where we're short and assuming we'll plug some kid in as a stop-gap because we're "only Southampton" and have a history of good academy projects. Plus they can't suggest Stephens or Turnbull because people actually saw them getting dissected in the L1 Play-Off Final.

Also the pedant in me is screaming "Premiership? Is he going to Scotland?". :(

I watched him play 45 mins against RB Leipzig. It was the second half when we let in 4 goals in 10 mins. Only when he moved to left back and McCarthy moved into left centre back did we look organized again and we took control of the game.

I can't say the four goals were his fault, but our left side was in chaos in these 10 minutes.

It was only the OP that called it the Premiership, term is not used by the Grauniad. The article also lists 20 players who play for Premier League teams "who could make an impact in pre-season" (very specific). In other words they are trying to see who might, if they do well, creep into the fringes of the teams, they don't seem to be claiming these players will break through into the PL teams this season. Indeed for Baily Cargill (former Saint now at Boscombe) they are actually suggesting a loan to a Championship side this season is the logical next step. Wouldn't surprise me actually if the outcome for Wood might be the same, i.e. loaning out to Champ/L1 side - maybe we can let Swindon have Wood this season to replace Turnbull or Stephens, one of whom will surely be involved in our first team squad this term (it looks more likely to be Stephens, although most Swindon supporters I know seemed to think Turnbull was the better of the two).

Interested to see Cargill was ex-Saints (can't claim to have ever heard of him before), together with Tyrone Mings (who I do know) that seems to be two defenders on the verge of breaking through to the PL (and now both at Boscombe) that our famed Academy have let slip through our fingers.

Just for clarification the headline to the feed said "Premier League: 20 youngsters who can make an impact in pre-season."

I'm mates with his Dad Nick. They're a lovely family. Nick was driving Wills down to Southampton from Stoneleigh (Epsom) most afternoons as a kid. It's nice to see their hard work maybe paying off.

Indeed. There is a Saints crest and picture of Will in the butchers on Stoneleigh Broadway.

  • 2 years later...
They always get our cast offs... Connolly, Niemi (how much did he earn from them without ever playing  ) and now Wood

Good luck to him I guess

If a kid leaves here because we deem him not good enough, I'm just happy if they get picked up by a league club. (Even them!)
