washsaint Posted 10 July, 2015 Share Posted 10 July, 2015 Yet again, the usual suspects crawl out of the woodwork and cry like little babies. Board doesn't know what it is doing, everyone is laughing at us, why didn't we offer Clyne and Toby more money, blah blah blah. Why don't you all wait and see how this pans out before throwing the baby out with the bathwater? Would have thought you might have kept your powder dry after being made to look idiotic last summer but obviously not. I cannot believe some of you think Toby would have come here if we'd thrown more money at him: he obviously played us like a fiddle. Ditto with Clyne. Thank god this board is not representative of Saints fans in general. Pure spite and drivel from too many who are just coming across as petulant, spoilt brats. Do you really not think the club knows what it is doing and will have plans B and C lined up? Losing out on Rojo didn't hurt us last year.
Raging Bull Posted 10 July, 2015 Share Posted 10 July, 2015 It'll take a long time for many (vocal) fans to understand there will always be a pecking order in this league. Saint Benali Posted 10 July, 2015 Share Posted 10 July, 2015 To be fair the whole Toby thing was a total **** up on our part. I believe the board dropped the ball and rightly deserve criticism. They said last year the plan was to hold on to our best players which obviously hasn't turned out that way. I would like to know what our actual strategy is. Selling 3 main players or more each season is not a good business strategy. You can only get away with it so many times. Next season is going to be very tough and we need to add to our squad with proven quality. Hopefully we can do that in the next few weeks.

LeBizzier69 Posted 10 July, 2015 Share Posted 10 July, 2015 While I understand there's a pecking order in the league, it doesn't make these things happening any easier to swallow, especially given our performances for 75% of last season. We all felt genuine progress was made, and I suppose hoped that the club's upward curve would continue. That's not to say it won't still of course, but I worry about the situation because I care about the club.
Deano6 Posted 10 July, 2015 Share Posted 10 July, 2015 I don't feel the Board are f**king up (maybe the Toby thing as an isolated incident, who knows, but not in general). However I do feel we are getting a bit shafted, due to the natural "pecking order", as it's been coined above. We got a bit too good, flew a bit too high, and now things are reverting back to norms - players too good for us are leaving for bigger and better and places, meaning we are dropping back to 'our level'. Also I think a few of the "big boys" were a bit sh!t last year (they know who they are) and they are now doing the strengthening they need to do to get better...which they are doing in part with our players. So I accept it's a natural course of events, but it's still a bit hard to swallow especially as we've had 6 years of unbroken incremental success. I fully expect us to do worse in the League next year - but at least we get to have fun in the Europa League to soften the blow*. *As a parenthetical thought: I am pretty sure we will do worse in the League next year whether or not we get into Europa (which is why I'm pleased that we have it to enjoy), due to losing Champions League quality players and replacing them with Europa League standard. However I am also sure that there will be a lot of people on this board midway through the season complaining that the Europa League was the reason for the drop and we could be challenging with the big boys if only we'd avoided it. I'll be interested to revisit my prediction in 6 months and see if I'm right.

Parenthetical means the same as "in parentheses" - i.e., in curved brackets. Just another way of introducing another thought, an extra idea, an interesting aside. Here's an example: He went down to the pub (after an early evening meal). The phrase in the curved brackets is parenthetical. ART Posted 10 July, 2015 Share Posted 10 July, 2015 Well, the New Moon isn't till July 15th, and players signed or signing from after the last full moon on July 1st will have risk factors. From July 15th till July 31st players signed will be more interesting. Perhaps Man United are waiting for the New Moon to sign Schneiderlin. and others. Hope we have learned from the past. Wade Garrett Posted 11 July, 2015 Share Posted 11 July, 2015 If the players that have left prove to be as effective as the 3 that left last Summer, hopefully the penny will drop with other clubs that they won't improve by signing our players. I reckon this could be the case with Clyne. Was only a regular this season because the young lad in his place went to Arsenal (and his career is stalling). Clyne can be a bit suspect defensively, and will be under the microscope at Liverpool. He must be hoping that 1 to 1 sessions with Newport IOW's finest can improve him. Do you really not think the club knows what it is doing and will have plans B and C lined up? Losing out on Rojo didn't hurt us last year. Great post. Rojo - forgot we were (allegedly) in for him. Pretty forgettable as a player as it turned out. I've been watching Saints since the 60s. In that time plenty have asked to move on to "better things". Very few have actually bettered themselves footballwise by doing so. Unfortunately plenty have financially. Meanwhile Saints have carried on, rarely seeming worse off (on the pitch) the next season despite the loss of one or more "stars". We seem to be one of those clubs that, under most (but not all) managers, have a knack of creating a team that is better than the sum of it's parts. Which is why many don't seem quite the same when they leave (biggest case in point, Steve Williams? ) whilst little old Southampton continue to confound the critics. The nice thing is we used to confound them by staying up, now we confound them by knocking on the top door. Players come, players go, but the club should add a motto to the badge "To Be Continued"
