Southampton made a late attempt to sign Angelo Ogbonna from Juventus on Wednesday night but the defender is due to have his medical at West Ham on Friday before signing.

The 27-year-old opted for West Ham over Everton after the London club agreed an £8.5m fee.

Juventus turned down Southampton's offer, understood to be £10m, because they had already given their commitment to West Ham. Napoli also made a late enquiry.

Southampton are weighing up midfield options too with Morgan Schneiderlin set to depart.

Marseille's Mario Lemina has been discussed as has Feyenoord's Jordy Clasie and former Arsenal player Kyle Ebicilio, 21, who has been playing for FC Twente.

Schneiderlin was the subject of much transfer speculation last summer too, but it appears the France midfielder will complete a move away from St Mary's, with Manchester United the likely destination.

If true then it is becoming a joke this summer. Board look to have got very lucky with Koeman last year but are currently on a mission to hamstring him utterly atm.

Same bed-wetting threads as last summer.

Was Alderweireld our first choice last summer?

Probably miss out on players all the time. All clubs do. We don't know how serious saints interest was, seems futile getting upset about it. We will clearly sign a CB and have a very good record of doing so.

You don't make an offer (contrast with making an enquiry) unless you're serious.

Our first choice last year seemed to be Vlaar. Toby did seem to come out of no where on deadline day, or the day before. Nothing to suggest we cannot do similar (although earlier please, saints!)

He's not very good. Would much prefer van Dijk.

He was seen as one of the hottest properties in italian football a couple of seasons ago. Maybe he's destined to become the Italian Titus Bramble; or maybe the move didn't work for no fault of his own. It happens. Either way, we have a track-record of going for players whose stock has fallen in value.

He was highly rated at Torino, but the move to Juve didn't work out. He's looked very leggy/cumbersome for them. He's very powerful and athletic, but seemingly prone to some very big lapses.

He's not a bad player by any means, he could probably do ok in the right environment - but I wouldn't say we've missed out on the signing of the decade.

Has anyone from the club confirmed the bid? Forgive for being cynical but this is the daily mail ffs.

Ah the Daily Mail. When you want to have a meltdown you believe it, otherwise you treat it with contempt.

You state "if true" - the operative word is "if".

Think it was initially reported by the very reliable gianluca dimarzio and also mentioned on the juve forum.

Are you listening Athletico

That was also my reaction to this. I certainly think better of Juventus right now than I do of Athletico.

It's funny people believe what they want to when it comes to buying/selling players.

Who is to say we are actually interested in all of these players the papers claim we are?!

This coming season is clearly a write off. Let's start building for 2016-17 where hopefully we will bounce straight back and not be reliant on the play offs.

True, and the Ashes are lost already as well. Not good.

Maybe we should forget about automatic promotion and concentrate on the play offs.

Whilst we're at it, I can't believe that seaside B&B of a cricket team have lost the Ashes already!!

Finding it hard to get upset about the failure of a bid I wasn't aware of for a player I have never heard of.

Why? This is swf, you're supposed to be fuming.

We win some we loose some I'm sure we will have a new partner for Jose when the season starts so lets not worry about the one that got away it's not like he's the next Maldini. As for moaning about us not already having Schniederlin's replacement that is just LOL TROLL!

:x As a result of this news I am pacing my front garden and if the postman attempts to deliver my season ticket in a minute I shall punch him in the face!

With you on this! Coz I read this stupid site, I know far more about the ins and outs of transfers than most of my Saints supporting family and friends in the UK. It's not because they don't care about Saints, it's just that most of them just wait to see what's actually happened, rather than fret about a million things that may happen. All this shizz doesn't bother them a bit, as they're blissfully unaware - I suspect this applies to most 'normal' saints. I also suspect this type of fan is under represented on this board!
