Exactly. He only goes if he not only gets back form but improves it. He's at a good club already. 5 year contract, so if he leaves next season for CL club, we're talking an amazing season and £30m minimum. I mean it's not a bad situation. I'd rather keep him, but not if keeping him means he has to be mediocre and half the player he was.

At the end of the day, as with Morgan this year, Lallana before, if they have seasons of that level which get the big clubs sniffing, then it means that as a club we've had a really good season - so we're in a much stronger position to replace with as close as the same level as possible.

I've accepted our position, it's not really ever going to change. As long as the top clubs are interested in our players, then we're doing something right.

Exactly. We create more players for the top 4 or 6 than anyone out there - The alternative is to have players that nobody wants.

Look at Swansea, how many high value players do they have? Like 15m+, or the potential to be that. They're a good team, but I don't see many.

Saints have some very good players. Wanyama and Mane are improving all the time and would add something to any squad already. £20m minimum either of them. Rodriguez will be at least that if he gets his form back, Tadic has more to prove but doubt he's lost value. Young english players like JWP, Reed, Targett don't need to do that much to see their value rocket, while Forster is probably worth more than we paid for him after and impressive first 7 or 8 months.

We just need to keep doing this. It's frustrating to lose players but if it makes the club profitable and helps us keep growing then so be it. We wasted money on Osvaldo, but look at the sums wasted year after year by clubs who've been in the premier league far longer than us.

Gylfi Sigorrdson maybe, but then he's done the ''big club move'' thing, so they may be safe with him for a bit longer. If that Montero fella keeps improving, he could be worth a decent amount. Shelvey will probably, at some point, command a £15m-£20m fee, because he's english.

And we've been good for 2 seasons. I mean come on, keeping players is a slow process. If we're up there for 5-10, win a cup, play in europe a few times, players will want to stay longer.

It's the surprise that gets me. How did anyone not know clyne and schneiderlin were going to leave? Yet wait for the 'schneiderlin signs for man utd' thread. outrage, repeating all this again etc.

I look at Porto's model in recent seasons, and whilst it's not using their academy like we do, their transfer profit is extraordinary. They bring in players like Fernando and Mangala for small fee's, then sell them on for a combined 50m. Same with James Rodriguez, Jackson Martinez. Then they just dip into the South American market and get the next talent for a couple of seasons. Falcao started out there too.

Benefit they have is they don't have the work permit wranglings to worry about, so they have first dibs on those talented South American's.

I just hope that we replace these players sooner rather than later, it did feel we were a little naive when it came the Alderweireld transfer, was he really interested in staying once tottenham came sniffing. My thoughts are we should be more decisive when bidding and a little nastier ala levy

As galling as it is, I think we all have to do accept our position, the last few years have given us hope that we could get near the top clubs but we have been put back firmly in our place the last couple of seasons. Trouble is, the way football works at the moment means it will never be a level playing field, we will mostly find that the table positions reflect the wealth of the club/owners and their willingness to spend. In fact we should forget about playing football and every May just have a table of clubs in the order of wealth and whoever has the most money gets the premier league title (Joke).

They also have champions league most years and potential to win titles, not something we're ever likely to do

Yep, I wasn't actually saying that was a benefit they have over us.... it's a benefit they have over a lot of elite clubs all around Europe. They're a very good window for talented South American's to go to, play well, get a big move a year or so later with less worry about work permits. They'll never have a settled team, but I doubt their fan's care too much. Great city, always competing in the top competitions and getting the chance to see some stars at their club most seasons.

I'm not convinced Jay will go next summer. He's signed a new contract so we have all the control there.

As long as we get BIG money when we sell (which we are doing) there is plenty of talent out there to replace them and the money we're raising from selling is exactly the thing that has enabled us to move ahead of Stoke, Swansea etc

Although this Summer we've got to replace Morgan, Clyne and Toby for £40m odd which isn't too easy to do with similar quality players...
