maysie Posted 7 July, 2015 Share Posted 7 July, 2015 Our current U21 right back is injured, the current U21 left back is already in the squad, the previous U21 left back signed for Man U for more than £20m the previous summer, how many of them are we supposed to produce? The9 Posted 7 July, 2015 Share Posted 7 July, 2015 Basically, he's another mouldable young player who hits the triggers in our analytics and we have the benefit of a member of the coaching staff having worked with him before, which is additional data around his character and personality that no amount of statistical analysis can give you. It's only a 2 year deal so it's a very guarded signing with short term need and maybe longer term upside in mind.

broken spoke Posted 7 July, 2015 Share Posted 7 July, 2015 Bottom line, two years is a shewd move, the cost isn't far off what you could pay for a loan player. and it stops mistakes like Mayuka (only another 2 years left).

Saint Benali Posted 7 July, 2015 Share Posted 7 July, 2015 McCarthy, Wood and Debayo could of acted as cover until the players were fit again in my opinion. Good luck to the lad and welcome aboard but seems a bit of a strange one.
nta786 Posted 7 July, 2015 Share Posted 7 July, 2015 Just been reading reports- apparently Darmian is available for 13m pounds. This is someone with a high resale value for the future and wouldve been perfect for replacement for Clyne. Oh well- maybe Darmians aiming higher than us anyway. Dig Dig Posted 7 July, 2015 Share Posted 7 July, 2015 Bit of an odd one considering that we supposedly don't do "back-up" signings but maybe he will do a decent job when called upon.
eddie Posted 7 July, 2015 Share Posted 7 July, 2015 I don't know. some players seem sh t and eventually come good. pelle was awful until he went to feyenoord - something like 22 goals in all comps in 130 odd games. We can obviously only base judgements on what the past form/achievements have been, which granted hasn't been good for cuco, but new manager, new club, new league.....things might change and he might be excellent. I mean, he might be terrible, but then why spend so much time on the keyboard tapping out how awful it would be if they don't eventually turn out to be a good signing. Keep calm and carry on.. Saint_Tony Posted 7 July, 2015 Share Posted 7 July, 2015 We need extra players for the europa league and league cup. We're not a top 4 club who have the luxury of signing 2 quality players for everyposition, not sure what people expect. He's a low risk investment, but like many others he will be given a chance. WealdSaint Posted 7 July, 2015 Share Posted 7 July, 2015 Wish him the best of luck. I have a feeling he'll either never really break into the first team OR He'll have a cracking season and we'll be complaining this time next year because the "usual suspects" are trying to sign him on the cheap because he only has a year left on his contract! I can confirm that, I did say he deserves a chance like any player we sign & koeman obviously knows better than us but here's some of the comments: "Im a fc twente fan.. but this is a big mistake of Southampton, he is a very very bad player!! S-Clarke Posted 7 July, 2015 Share Posted 7 July, 2015 People are also discounting our ability to improve players, which we have been great at over the past years. I reckon that Koeman will give him some playtime in the friendly against Feyenoord later this month, de Kuip is in his hometown after all and he knows his direct opponents Boëtius and Manu. These leftwingers from Feyenoord are not in their best form these last months so it will be a fair test for Martina...

Morgan, Cork, Fonte, Clyne, Rodriguez, Lambert, Lallana, Bertrand, Mane - are some names off the top of my head I can think of. None of those players were expected to reach the heights they did, but we provided an environment for them to.

None of those players were expected to reach the heights they did, but we provided an environment for them to. Not sure I buy those examples - some like Clyne, Mané and to a lesser extent Jrod have performed exactly as expected. Others were bought when they were raw but had bags of potential; while others had outgrown their various clubs and we simply gave them a bigger platform on which to perform. By contrast, Martina is a journeyman, an established pro with a middling track record. I think it'll be very much a case of what you see is what you get. Morgan, Cork, Fonte, Clyne, Rodriguez, Lambert, Lallana, Bertrand, Mane - are some names off the top of my head I can think of. None of those players were expected to reach the heights they did, but we provided an environment for them to. Like I said, good players performing well. I'm not sure what heights you are referring to with some of those players. Cork and Bertrand both came from Chelsea's youth team and ended up being decent, upper midtable players. Nothing special there. We spent £10m on Mane as he was already showing some decent ability at Salzburg. Lambert was a decent Championship player at a League 1 club when we signed him. Yes he improved but only from being a decent Championship striker into a midtable Premier League striker. Clyne has developed but was already being touted as a big star when we signed him from Palace. JRod was in the Championship team of the season so again, he's hardly made a giant leap. Fonte has also improved but was always a very good CB in the Championship with Palace. That pretty much leaves Morgan and Lallana, who were both talented teenagers when they came to the club. Both have gone on to be decent Premier League players but Martina isn't a 17 year old in our academy, so you can't really say that's relevant to him. The9 Posted 7 July, 2015 Share Posted 7 July, 2015 I don't know how the youth academy at Southampton is structured but from your post I understand that there is no RB left since the current U21 RB is injured? Or is the rest not even good enough yet to make it to the bench of the first team? Would be a pity with the new "homegrown" rules in mind... We have just signed Cedric Soares from Sporting and he's our current first choice RB, as we just sold Clyne to Liverpool. The left back from last season has just had knee surgery and will be out for 6 weeks, and the U21 left back who covers him is at best currently a borderline starter. The U21 right back is injured. So our full back situation for the main and reserve squad is 1 in, 1 out, 2 injured and 1 full back who we decided shouldn't start much last season, plus Martina. There's an U18 RB and LB too, but they've not played a match for the first team between them (and I'm fairly sure the U18 LB is actually the U16 LB due to the rapid promotion our left backs have had in the past few years).
