Cuco Martina - Signs Two Year Deal (Official)

I find it quite funny that people were saying that if we get to Europe, we need more depth, we need a bigger squad. We're going to struggle if we don't add to the squad etc etc etc. So we sign obvious back up players, and people are underwhelmed.

People don't quite understand how difficult it is for a club of our level to sign backup players. Being a backup for City/Utd is totally different to being a backup for us. Having the quality of Gardos and Yoshida already in kind of backup positions is pretty impressive for us, and let's see what this bloke has in his locker.

The guy's real name is Rhu-endly, his aunties gave him the nick "Cuco" for being a little rascal when he was a kid. Good thing they didn't call him Cuckoo for being an idiot... :)

Some more trivial information: he went through the youth academy of Feyenoord but didn't get a contract. He started as an amateur for RBC Roosendaal in the Dutch second division and later on he got his first contract there. Next he went to RKC Waalwijk when Erwin Koeman was the headcoach. In 2013 Twente bought him for 282K pounds and they used him as an RB and sometimes as a right CB. He doesn't know who his father is and he doesn't care about that. He's proud of his mother who took 2 and sometimes 3 jobs to keep things going on for her family. As many young Antillians in Holland become a criminal, you can say that his mother (and older brother) did a good job to keep Cuco on the right track. Given his limitations it is very remarkable that he will now be playing in the PL, allthough it might be nothing more than sitting on the bench. His ambition is to play in the CL (off course...), considering his luck it might even happen!

Seems the equivalent of signing Antony Pulis. Not something to be excited about, quite the opposite in fact imo.

Of course it does.

For **** sake, what is going on with the invasion of morons on here at the moment? Utter ****s.

Well that's a bit harsh, anyone who's played first team football shouldn't be compared to Pulis really.. We'll find out soon enough I guess. What time do the lads set off for Austria?

Shirly Saint if you feel like that go and support another club we have limited funds and a well run club ,personally I have complaints

I think he was quoting a comment during last summer from a well known poster on here ....probably should have put a smiley on the end

100 saints fourm posters could dis the boy and I'd still have faith in R.K as he knows more than most of us put together about a) what a play is like b) what is COULD be like and c) his plan for the player.

Thinking about it, only Sadio, Bertrand, and Toby have been the other good signings RK has made, all the others have been hit and miss.

Forster was excellent, unfortunate injury though. 16 goals in his first season isn't bad for Pelle, same as Tadic's impact in the first half. As good as Tadic was in the first half, Mane was as bad...let's not forget the slaughtering he was getting!

Long/Gardos as hit and miss I'll give you.

Surely we can use our own academy players as cover rather than importing filler.

obviously not

...as Bevis Mugabe is also injured.

The fact it's only a 2 year deal tells you all you need to know about how confident we are this will work out in the long term. Stop-gap signing to stop us looking completely exposed at the back with Forster, Clyne, Alderweireld and Bertrand currently out from last season's first choice starting back 5 - three of them have now been replaced.

mondern day paul telfer

If he is as good as Telfer we have a steal, Telfs may never have been stellar but in his prime I'd have him back as reserve right back tomorrow!

LOL Pullis has played a grand total of 90 games in his 10 year 'career' with 44 of those being for a second (EDIT Just realised they are third string in the US LOL) string US side? This lad may not be Gary Neville but he is already more successful than Pullis!

LOL LOL ........um still LOL

I think it's weird how he needs it on both knees - either a hereditary / genetic thing or was he a naughty boy on holiday and did something he shouldn't be doing? Or just a freak accident? But both knees at the same time is strange.

Not that strange, he's probably got minor tears and damage in both and would benefit from some surgery to tidy it up, but Saints wanted to make sure they had a signing lined up before letting him go ahead.

The other possibility is he has wear and tear damage that already needs surgery for pain relief in one knee and they may as well tidy up the other one at the same time to prevent it getting worse or him having to miss another 6 weeks to have that fixed.

yeah i forgot about Forster... he's been impressive.

Ellia, Djuricic haven't shown their worth yet, either....

So we have some work to do, hopefully our new signings will help with getting a more balanced team.

Elia and Djuricic both contributed a bit, difficult to claim they weren't worth having.

They're not here anymore.

Which is the whole point in loans! If Elia had maintained the form he showed against Newcastle we would have had a 40 page thread saying sign him up, he didn't so we sent him back nothing lost and really a little gained as he had a positive impact in at least one game! Expensive gambles like Ramirez are what we need to avoid if we are spending 10-15 million we need to know what we are getting in future!

Nothing wrong with having a doubt now and then about Ronald Koeman, whether it's about the players he's interested in or his game tactics. Don't get me wrong, I quite like the man and he did great for Southampton this year as he did for Feyenoord before. With Martina he just puts faith in his brother's judgement as there is nothing to show for Martina to believe he can make it in the PL. You can say that for a lousy 1 million you can take the gamble with a player who doesn't have a problem with the fact that he won't play much or you could argue that Koeman should aim higher than the Martina's of this world in order to get Saints to the next level. I can sympathise with both views...

What surprises me most is that the youth academy can't deliver a RB with the same or even more potential than Martina. That doesn't look good...

I agree with the bit about using loans, not sure we regarded Ramirez as a gamble - massive Cortese vanity project which at least showed Saints were in a different market to previously with the kind of signings we made, but he was only a gamble in the sense of getting a South American to settle in England, and that's been a lot less of an issue for clubs recently.

I know no more about him than most others on the forum, but am not prepared to write him off before he's kicked a ball.

I can't believe that Edwin K. would put his reputation on the line by recommending a player he didn't think could improve.

Remembering those of you who condemned Pelle and Tadic ..at first sight ......and those awful first games with Mané, maybe the guy needs a chance to settle in.

On paper... he would be behind the queue of Yoshida and Gardos, but he may be a surprise packet?....no doubt we'll see in practice games.

...and for a fee of c.£1 million.... he can't be regarded as a gamble compared to the idea of paying £12 for someone with bad knees or ...a bad temper.

Our current U21 right back is injured, the current U21 left back is already in the squad, the previous U21 left back signed for Man U for more than £20m the previous summer, the previous U21 right back went to Arsenal for a pile o'cash and we also just sold the first team right back at a profit after a couple of years too - how many of them are we supposed to produce?
