Idrissa Gueye has passed a medical with Aston Villa and agreed a 4 year contract. Now he is waiting for a work permit, according to RMC.

We're not being beaten to anyone by anyone. Agents have been using our name to flush out suitors. Gueye is just one of many players we've been linked with for whom we've had no real interest. Add Praet, Ogbonna, Bender and others to the list.

ITK?

Not in the slightest. Look at message boards of every Premier League club in the land; they're all being linked with the same players as us. Because agents and selling clubs leak these stories out there in order to generate interest and get their hands on some of the Premier League pound.

Look at how swiftly we did the deals for Juanmi and Cedric. Would we therefore have struggled to get a deal over the line for Gueye, who is evidently desperate for Premier League football, with Lille also very keen to sell?

To be fair, we did swoop in pretty late to swipe Cedric from Stoke. But I agree with you.

To be honest, Clasie said something similar when he said that he hopes to have a good couple of seasons with us...

Yep, and it's not exactly newsworthy. Player tells the truth because he hasn't had any media training.

If players were honest they would all say this, and why shouldn't they want to better themselves? Mind you, not the wisest thing to say when you have just joined a new club!!

Maybe there's a bit of denial on my part, but it was clear from the start of the interview that Clasie's English is not too good. It's possible that he thought 'couple' to mean a nonspecific number of years. It would be a bit weird for him to outright suggest he was here for the season and one more, then he's off.

Someone has posted in the comments that the ESPN report missed off further quotes where he said words to the effect of 'just because they've had a few difficult seasons, doesn't mean it (Villa) still isn't a bif club'. So probably a non-story like the Clasie 'couple of years' thing although quite frankly, if either or both players play out of their skin for the next two years, Chelsea and the two Manchester clubs will probably be trying to buy them if we're honest. If that means Clasie has helped Saints keep in the top 7 or 8 then the club will have done well out of it.

I used to use "couple" and "few" interchangeably as a kid, until someone pointed out the nuance, so perfectly possible he only thought it meant the same as "few". Also, even if he only stays 2 years, who cares?

I'm dutch, I did not know there was a difference until this post. Btw, Clasie went to the same school as Van Persie, Martins Indi, Wijnaldum, Fer, De Vrij, De Guzman, Kongolo and Janmaat.

Impressed with Morgan in those 2 games. He's not going to look spectacular, but it's no coincidence that they haven't let a goal in yet. He's a terrific shield. He can make decent CB's look a lot better than they are.

If he can make Smalling look good, he deserves to be Footballer of the Year.

When he first turned out for manure i thought he did well but he's absolute gash - not sure how he still gets the nod each week tbh.

Gash?! Jesus I wonder if some people on here actually watch many games. He's always had the attributes to be very good and in the last 6 months has started to show that. Developing into a great player
