eddie Posted 1 July, 2015 Share Posted 1 July, 2015 http://news.ladbrokes.com/football/premier-league/bayern-munich-target-fit-southamptons-defence.html? Interesting read. Summary: Saints were fairly poor at set pieces (3rd worst from dead balls) last season, but had 9th highest attempts from such balls. The writer suggests charlie austin as a potential solution and also some bloke called Kamil Glik, a CB, who scored 7 goals in italian league all from set pieces. Interesting if that latter name is based on a rumour or just a name out a hat player who is rather good at scoring from set pieces.
ScepticalStan Posted 1 July, 2015 Share Posted 1 July, 2015 Kamil Glik is an utter monster from set-pieces. Some of the defending in this video is pretty woeful but you can still see how well the guy can thump his head through the ball even well up in the air in a contested header. Scored against England too a while back. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wPBoko00XOw Not sure about his defensive abilities, but he's a first-choice CB for Torino and they're a decent, top-half side...so, might be an idea. We'll definitely need to look around assuming we lose Toby.
Deano6 Posted 1 July, 2015 Share Posted 1 July, 2015 We should definitely have "goal scoring" as our number 1 criteria for picking our centre-backs.
Wes Tender Posted 1 July, 2015 Share Posted 1 July, 2015 So Toby is Dutch, is he? One is inclined to ignore articles like these if the originator cannot even get simple facts right. Also, as the single reply posted points out, we are not moderately financed, but maybe careful on attempting to be prudent with our spending. I don't think it was surprisingly bad we were **** poor at set pieces last season even JWP the "dead ball specialist" failed to convert a single free kick into a goal. When we had Lambert it was a bit better he could score a free kick, take a proper peno (unlike Tadic) and could be a threat at the back post at corners. LGTL Posted 1 July, 2015 Share Posted 1 July, 2015 Not really a surprise. Our set pieces were woeful last season and have been for some time.
