http://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/news/southampton-worried-over-ronald-koeman-4607593?

On one hand the pessimist in me says that as January rolls round we should expect our bi-annual fix of behind the scenes drama. Game of Saints.

The optimist in me says that Koeman is man of his word and seeing what state we were in as a result of Poch's ditching us, he wouldn't want to do the same especially with his brother here etc.

I would be amazed if he didn't at least see it through to the end of the season.

He could put his name in lights (even more so), and then name his price at any club, if he could get us into the Champions League given what he walked in to (the outsiders view of what he walked into anyway)

He's in a no lose situation. I also think he's a man of his word though and will probably even see out his contract at the very least

Just saw this myself. This and the Alderweireld story seem to me to be trying to unsettle us a little.

I guess it goes with the territory as all the big clubs have positive and negative press surrounding them.

We'll see more and more posturing as the season goes on with players/agents/managers using the media to their own end.

All part of the game.

Wouldn't blame him if he went, to manage your country is the ultimate honour.

However Ron made it quite clear that the dutch missed the boat with him for now, he wants to fulfill his contract here. They will have to wait.

I believe he is a man of his word. Or perhaps I am just naive.

Koeman has achieved so much with us in such a short space of time, that we've quickly grown to love him as fans. Losing him even at this early stage would be a hammer blow to our ambitions, whether it be to win a trophy, get to Europe, top 4 etc etc, and one wonders, a la Pochettino, whether the talent would want to follow suit.

That said I'm eerily confident he'll stay put, based on nothing but gut instinct. He's doing so well here, and at a club with ambition and, perhaps more importantly, money to spend, and as has been said, he's working with his brother which must make things go much more smoothly behind the scenes. The Dutch job is a bit of a poisoned chalice - they perhaps overachieved in the World Cup, and that will naturally put any Dutch national manager under pressure to achieve similar with a similar squad of players.

I'd actually be more gutted to see Koeman go than I did Pochettino, but if it did happen, I now have faith in the powers that be to appoint a decent successor.

I think Ronald Koeman is smarter than to go for the job - at the moment anyway.

He was clearly interested in the job earlier in the year... and several legendary Dutch names tipped him, but the Dutch FA decided for Hiddinck instead.

It wasn't too difficult to see that RK was a bit miffed (when asked about it in Saints' interviews), but is clearly "happy" to let the Dutch FA stew in their own juice (having rejected him previously.)

There is a good time... (and not so good time) to take up a management job. Moyes eagerly took the poison chalice at MU after Fergie quit, and subsequently paid the price of failure.

The Dutch national side, which looked so adventurous in the WC, is now in tatters. Their problems won't be resolved overnight either, and it is a good moment in time NOT to go after that particular job.

Ronald Koeman on 16/10/14:

Koeman dismissed claims he that he would take the post if he was offered it now saying “There’s certainly no chance to move now out of Southampton. I was interested in that job, because when I left Feyenoord I was nominated to be the national coach but the federation chose for Hiddink in that moment.

“I’m the coach and manager of Southampton and they ( the Dutch) have to wait if they want me as their coach. I was always interested to manage in England one day, and now I’ve got the opportunity.”

The article adds that Koeman said the situation back in his home country is “ not my problem” and that they missed their chance to sign him when he left Feyenoord.

Koeman has been pretty clear on this in recent press conferences, he's not interested in the Dutch job. They had their chance in the summer, he was under the impression he was going to get the job, then they went behind his back and appointed Hiddink instead. I'd imagine we're paying him significantly more than he'd be earning with the Dutch FA, and that job seems to have become a bit of a poisoned chalice after they somehow got third place in the World Cup in the summer - it would be nigh-on impossible to better that achievement at the Euros, many of the teams that underperformed in Brazil simply won't be that bad again on more familiar territory.

The restructuring programme at Tottenham should start with replacing the chairman, he's an utter bellend who is totally to blame for their current plight.

Levy going for his 140th attempt at a "re-structure".

We are becoming a legitimate threat... threats need to be neutralised.

For everyones sanity I suggest that no one reads a newspaper or looks online from now to the end of Jan - I thought the speculation could n't get any worse after the summer but I think I could be wrong - I dont even think our kit man is safe after that training video and the oxygen lol

I'm sure there is nothing to worry about with this. Ronald strikes me as a man of integrity. He has signed a contract and would fully intend to see it through. He appears to love the job and also enjoys living in the area (judging by his tweets). He is not a 'career' manager looking for the next big job (unlike a certain Argentinean). I would fully expect him to stay here for at least the next three years (hopefully longer) build something really special here at Saints and then take up the Holland job after.

Unfortunately our high flying status does not sit too kindly with the press and media, basically 'Southampton fc flying high' doesn't sell papers.

Well that's clearly not true, if anything it's probably an incredibly positive thing for the media (as are West Ham and Swansea) since it means they can flog the myth that the premier league is the "best league in the world" and that it's not all about money.

In fact if you look at the amount of positive coverage we've had, and the amount fans of other - non big - clubs who've been revelling in this season, i'd say our story probably does the exact opposite and sells papers since it's a different story to "will x cash rich club, beat y cash rich club with £xbn player they signed for image rights in Japan/China/India (delete as appropriate).

More likely is the fact that we're doing well so other clubs are taking note and trying to restructure in the model we have, since football is largely a fad based sport due to the unpredictability in advance of what is going to happen (in terms of a good model that is).

Apart from your precious sense of victimhood, what are you on about - many see it as a breath of fresh air. The Telegraph wrote a nice piece on a return to the 'imagined democracy' of the 1970s.

If the Netherlands dont win the next match they wont qualify, and if they do Hiddink wont resign. There will be much better times and opportunities times for Koeman to take over.I wouldn't be surprised to see him do three years here then take the job a year before the World Cup.

Nor with the London-centric BBC national TV who I note would rather say things like "Spurs moved into the top half of the table": and the following week: " Spurs lost 2-1 to Stoke" rather than "Southampton win again to maintain the pressure at the top with a 2-0 win against Leicester".

Why would BBC news report on Saints winning on the Saturday during their Sports reports on a Sunday which is when when Spurs played Stoke?

I call that day - centric rather than London-centric and it kinda makes sense.

BBC Sport moved all its operations to Salford several years ago.

It moved with a fair chunk of the BBC's other operations purposely to avoid that particular charge.

When Hiddink was appointed, wasn't Danny Blind appointed his number 2 and lined up as his successor? Even if Hiddink leaves, Blind is next in line anyway.

Yup, a few weeks ago Ruud Gullit was asked about Koeman and the Holland job on MOTD, and said that it was already agreed Blind would get the job after Hiddink.

  • 7 months later...

From that article...

After an exhibition win over Spain (2-0) and a painful defeat against the United States (4-3) was the away match with Latvia in the program. Orange had to see that game to win to keep chance at the European Championships in France. It worked: 2-0. After that encounter Hiddink announced that he was considering a step back and put the main responsibility for his assistant Danny Blind.

They have also in the past announced a succession plan was already in place, with Blind taking over in 2016. That will probably (hopefully) just be put into place early.
