mightysaints Posted 22 June, 2015 Share Posted 22 June, 2015 The property owner at the rear of my garden has a large dilapidated garage. Half of the asbestos roof has collapsed and is cracked and broken in several places. Knowing that white cement based asbestos is harmful to health if it is damaged what can I do to make him clean it up. Can I make a call to the council, to be honest he has upset a number of our neighbours in the past and we have been inundated with rats in the garden all coming from his property but he never does anything about it, had to get pest control in. St Chalet Posted 22 June, 2015 Share Posted 22 June, 2015 Yes, call the council and don't go anywhere near it.
Saint_Abroad Posted 22 June, 2015 Share Posted 22 June, 2015 HSE recommends you contact your local council concerning disposal so it's probably a good place to start. https://www.gov.uk/asbestos-in-home For your information, just in case you aren't aware, asbestos is most dangerous when it becomes airborne. Just being in the room isn't necessarily a death sentence and a lot of asbestos abatement consists of sealing it up air tight, rather than removal. I assume it's exposed to the elements? Without knowing how close it is to everything just keep the kids out of it and don't play with what has already fallen.
hutch Posted 22 June, 2015 Share Posted 22 June, 2015 Are you sure it's asbestos? They stopped using asbestos in the boards around 40 years ago. But they carried on making the boards without asbestos.
Seaford Saint Posted 22 June, 2015 Share Posted 22 June, 2015 I have just moved to a house with asbestos in the roofline.....I also found some asbestos rain water pipes dumped in the garden. You can get someone to remove the asbestos for you and they double bag it and take it to a re-cyclng depot and the depot will take it as bonded asbestos. mightysaints Posted 22 June, 2015 Author Share Posted 22 June, 2015 Its definitely asbestos, i have done enough awareness courses now and have worked in shipping a few years, Its the blue that's the real killer nasty stuff. The whites ok if its not broken or flaking which the garage behind has. I have lost an aunt a while back, she got asbestosis just washing my uncle's overalls when he worked at the docks. The death rate for asbestosis hasn't reached peak yet but at least we are all far more aware now. I will call Environmental health tomorrow and see what can be done. No point in asking the neighbour he will just ignore me.
SarniaSaint Posted 22 June, 2015 Share Posted 22 June, 2015 (edited) There 2 types of asbestos still around .....friable and non-friable. The friable (loose fibers and the most dangerous)is found in pipe insulation, non-friable is found in solid pipes, flooring tiles and solid sheets.....both can only be removed and disposed of by licensed contractors and require a government permit for removal. That's the situation here http://www.vice.com/en_ca/read/sarnias-waterfront-park-is-still-closed-due-to-asbestos-poisoning2 Still a great place to live though.
