Young players to break through next season

With European games (provided we make the groups stages!) are going to mean utilising the whole squad giving more opportunities for young players to break through.

We will definitely see more of Reed and Targett. I think Hesketh, Seagar and Gallagher will get opportunities as late subs and league cup games.

Any players who may make their full first team debut? Slattery perhaps? Know very little about him mind only that he is 16. Could he set a Saints record if he played?

What definition of "break through" are we using?

Reed will get a few more matches than this season, hopefully McQueen. Targett will get League Cup and FA Cup games but I don't think he'll be used much. It's possible Stephens or Turnbull might get a look in, but... Preston took them to pieces. Hesketh needs to gain 2 stone to have a hope. Not seen much of Gape tbh. Would be surprised if Gallagher wasn't used a bit more this coming season.

Can't see Seager getting close unless we sign Austin, in which case we'll have a system he might be successful in - but at the moment McQueen looks more like Pelle than Pelle at certain points - but then we've just signed Juanmi and Rodriguez may be back.

I don't think anyone's going to make a big step up though, it's becoming more and more difficult to integrate players the further we get from U21 standard. Maybe getting to EL Group stages will give people a chance?

Good assessment. McQueen could be the one imo. Josh Sims is a great talent too but needs to bulk up as much as Hesketh. Those two have the ability but not the physique, at the moment.

Yeah, I've backed off my Josh Sims love-in a bit since last season for exactly that reason, he'll just get leaned off everything. At the moment he's Nathan Dyer-esque and it took Dyer years to get established too, even starting at a lower level. He may be Lallana with pace, but that route to the first team is congested with players much more suited to the first team at the moment.

McQueen has looked very accomplished and plays so similarly to Pelle that it's ridiculous we keep Seager up there to be honest - I just can't see how he fits the current first team system, he's being asked to play a system that doesn't suit him at all to mimic the first team. Gallagher out wide is a bit of a waste at that level but he's looking pretty decent there too, and we may as well coach the kids to play across all the attacking positions as contingency.

Les loves Josh so he'll be given every chance. Like you though it's hard to see how he can get through. Personally I'd give him a season loan in league 1.

Gallagher is seen to be further ahead in his development than seager and mcqueen. I can only assume he's being used in different roles so that he can give the first team different options.
