Didn't know if anyone missed this be he played the full 90 mins in a friendly against Italy last night. Portugal won 1-0.

He's such an improved player these last few seasons, i'm not suprised he's getting regular international football now. Glad he's here, wouldn't want to swap him for any other CB to be honest. He's so commited to us and he's easily got another 3 seasons in him.

That's probably Portugals best result for years, always struggling to defend and perhaps they've found the answer albeit so late on in his career. Should be able to make it up to the 2018 world cup though if his form and fitness continues

Since he's been here, he has been the consummate professional. We were lucky that he came to us when we were at our lowest ebb and he obviously had enough confidence in our ambitions to progress further than Crystal Palace eventually. As we have grown in stature, so he has grown with us.

He played an integral part of that progression back up through the divisions, scoring some vital goals, in particular the winner at high-flying Brighton that led to our automatic promotion that season. Since then he has improved steadily to play a commanding role in the 2nd meanest defence in the PL and as a result of his success with us, he has achieved his ambition to play for his country. He is an exemplary captain, leading by example and playing a significant part in the spirit and cameraderie of the team, popular and well respected by his team mates.

Buying him has been one of the best pieces of business the club has done during the past decade.

might also say it was a "win-win " situation for both him (and Pellé )......as the latter didn't get off the bench and become tainted with any blame for the Italian defeat.

Easily my favourite saints player ATM. They were looking at his game on sky a while back and praising his reading of the game. Took a little time to adapt when we first got promoted but he's come on leaps and bounds. Making him captain was a master stroke tbh. Seems to have given him even more confidence. Always said that Liverpool bought the wrong cb from us.

......or looking at it another way.......didn't buy the best CB. Thank goodness !;)

Yes indeed, he seemed to grow in confidence and stature once he was made captain.

Tbh I do think Lovren is a very very good defender BUT, he needs a leader next to him marshalling the line. Liverpool bought him to be that man and he just hasn't got the leadership skills.

If he came back IMO he'd revert back to being a good classy defender again. Unfortunately for him, whilst his head was stuck in Liverpool it didn't realise that Brendan is tactically naive.

Why is Keegan on that banner, he didn't do much for us, made his fame Liverpool and abroad and couldn't get off to N'castle quick enough...bring on Fonte

Because we signed the European Player of the Year. Today's equivalent is signing Ronaldo, never mind Fonte. The closest we've come to doing that kind of business since is getting a La Liga winner and near Champions League winner 2014/15 in on loan...

We signed a 2012 Champions League winner.

KK is on the banner because he is part of the Saints folk lore, he may not have stayed long, but this is how players become legends. I think Jose is a top player, but really he isn't and never will be one of the outstanding legends of this club, unless he leads us to a CL Final or something.

Still irritates me that Big Ron is not on the banner.

Well, yeah, but he was playing for Chelsea at the time so it doesn't count. :)

Indeed. And I'm not sure there's anyone at the club who did more to stabilize things behind the scenes when we were in the midst of last Summer's firestorm.

He shines like a beacon in a sport that has become depressingly self-centered, and I agree with Redslo's comment about his coaching potential - he certainly has a perfect mentor in Koeman.

Agree with the above, one of my favourite Saints players now and hope he can continue his form this season, we'll badly miss Alderweireld if he doesn't come back.

Fonte has come along way from the dark days of league one when his confidence was low and Pardew had an affair with his wife

What a gent! When two of my Grandsons were Saints mascots at Stoke Jose walked out with the youngest who was only six at the time and chatted with him all the way out to the line up. Grandson still talks about it.Made my Nipper and our family very proud indeed.

Here on Portuguese TV Friday night was the talk of Cedric signing for Premiership Club Southampton. Along side was the number 6 and Fonte's name. I think we will see more on Portuguese TV stations now we have 2 Saints members in the National Team. This has really pushed the Southampton FC name to the fore. When the Saints are on the TV and myself and two other supporters go up the bar, we are not smirked at anymore. The Portuguese say to us with some pride that Jose Fonte is our Captain, which makes a bloody change from having the manager of the blue team shoved down our necks. I think next season will allow us to hold our heads up even higher. Oh and the Liverhampton fans, well they are a shadow of their former selves.

Jose Fonte I hope will become another legend at Saints roll on next season I shall be back for 5-6 games.

  • 1 month later...

Just realised, Fonte has now been with us more seasons than Lambert and his impact has been at least as important, not least in recent seasons where he has really stepped up to the plate on performances and in terms of last season how he has blossomed into a magnificent team captain. He loves this club, he bleeds this club, get him on the f*ckin banner already. If Lambert is up there, Fonte should definitely be up there IMO. There may not be anyone else worthy enough for some time.

It will be an honour to have Fonte captaining us into our Europa League campaign, after coming up from League 1 to EL with us within 6 years.

Ron Davies should be added to the Banner before anyone else. It is a disgrace that he is not already included.

Jose has turned out to be a great player, but I think the banner should be for true legends in Saints history, unless the banner becomes very wide I don't think JF really qualifies. Perhaps we need a reserve banner, or a scrolling banner so that these slightly lesser mortals can be included.

Fonte is the only player in our first 11 we cannot afford to lose to injury or transfer. That says more about our la k of trusted depth at cb than it does about fonte's goodness. Fonte has surpassed expectations possibly, but I'm not sure he ranks in the top 10 players to play for saints. If he was keeping mark wright or alderweireld out of the side then it might different. Lambert kept guly out of the side. Guly is a legend which makes lambert a legend by default and deserving of a place on the banner

(that and the goals + working class lad done good thing).

Agree with most of the comments expressed on here re Jose

Probably our most improved player

Just to think there was speculation a season or two back that he would be off to Swansea (?) for £2m -£3m!!

Worth far, far more to us than that at the moment

I think players should only be put on the banner once they have stopped playing for us, that way the decision is a bit more objective, rather than clamouring for the latest starlet and then regretting it later. How many people wanted Lallana on the banner 18 months ago? I know Fonte SEEMS to love the club, and his importance to the side cannot be understated, but no-one can be 100% sure he is going to join Spurs next month...

Ron Davies should be ahead of him in the pecking order. From my generation, I think Benali is the best shout - a true cult hero and now a great ambassador for the club.

Would love to see Jose lift a trophy for us.

Absolutely 100% this.

You actually make a very good point here. It does make a lot more sense to wait until they have stopped playing.

I still reckon he'll end up on there though :D especially if the next couple of seasons continue for him like the last!

It will be interested no to see who does better next season ...... Fonte without Alderweireld, or Alderweireld without Fonte. My money's on Fonte.

Yes, that's an interesting point. During the midst of his struggles, Lovren was quoted as saying: "It is not so easy to lead all the time. I was used to other players leading before..."

You hear plenty of people saying that being a central defender is 90% about good positioning etc. So - can we conclude that Fonte is a leader and makes his partners look good by helping to ensure that they are in the right place at the right time? Lovren certainly took a nose-dive without Fonte beside him...
