Roy Hodgson warns Clyne over attitude in response to Slovenia game

Don't think he's been as bad as people make out but odd you single out the Leicester game. Was very poor there - at the time, thought it was due to him being clattered and playing with a knock for half the game.

He made a bunch of overlapping runs off the ball and never got a pass, probably our best player that day dealing reasonably well with Vardy's tireless running too (even so, about a 7/10 at best).

I'll never understand the reasoning behind needing to play for a so-called big club. Do Man Utd shirts hold magical powers I am unaware of? Will Clyne's form suddenly leap ten-fold the moment he slips on a Liverpool kit?

No no you forget it's much harder to play for a team like Liverpool or Man Utd. At least that's what the sports media keeps telling everyone lately. There I was thinking it should be easier when one is surrounded by supposedly better players.

Ah..... but you haven't been listening to Roy.

He said ." having a good season is no guarantee of a first team place for the international side....." so he chose a team that had a mediocre season instead.

He should be glad that Jack Wilshere put ona good show ......... for once.

No way "Glass Ankles" will last a summer tournament. Its laughable the press are now pinning their hopes on a crock.

Its certainly harder playing for a team "coached" by Brenda and having to cover for a geriatric midfielder.

God... why do we still have this geriatric fool as mational manager. The man is stuck in the dark ages. The one role that Redknapp was tailor made for, no tansfers to worry about, and Brooking and Co bottled it.

Redknapp would have been sh*t at the job as well; and precisely for the reason that there are no transfers, he'd have had to make do with the players he is given and get the best out of them rather than replacing them wholesale for costly imports.

Hodgson is a terrible old duffer but I very much doubt Redknapp would have been any better. His last season at QPR was a sign of what he'd become.

Personally, I thought it important to have an English manager. The preceding foreign ones weren't a success so what was there to lose? At that time it was 'Arry or Woy. Woy was the least worst option. But now I have to question that.....he is shît.

Problem is the actual number of top class English managers is pretty small all the top managers in the PL are foreign or from other home nations would Gary Monk be the best English manager available at the moment? I wonder if the FA have thought about moving Southgate up to the position after Roy leaves?

Don't worry both Southgate and Monk would be sh*t at the job.

Perhaps they are training Gary Neville up for it...

Can't recall which radio station it was (talkSport probably) but they were talking about potential next England manager, and English ones. And really, the only name that they could come up with was Pardew (not that they were advocating that he take the job). They also mentioned Howe for the future, but really, that is typical journalism knee jerk bigging up after his fantastic season last year.

So now, for once, I am thinking that maybe we will have to go abroad seeing as we have no one here nor will ever be as ballsy as the Germans and appoint an ex-player with no prior managerial experience, like Klinsmann (and also Voller). I had thought that the experience that Woy had around the world, would make him the ideal choice, even with the disastrous time at Liverpool (and being silly, one might say that he favours Liverpool to make up for his time there), but he plays the same old safe style of football which is boring and just not good enough.

Then there is the club vs country bit, but from the players' perspective. Who pays their wages? Who do they really want to play for, as only one gives them their lavish lifestyle? The performances by the national team have been diabolical in finals of competitions, and merely adequate in qualifying for them. It can't all be down to a **** poor manager, can it?

I think they are which would be pretty strange with no actual managerial experience other than being Hodgson's number 2. I do like Neville though, excellent knowledge of the game.

I also wouldn't be adverse to Pardew being the manager, I like him and think he could do well.

6 Wins outta 6. Work that out.

That's true but it's also kidding ourselves that we have improved from the WC, when we really haven't. Or look back to the last Euros where we qualified unbeaten (5w 3d 0l) - how did we do there? Got through the group stages (IIRC we were pretty dire) but then out at the first knockout round. That is typical - we over promised and under achieved. At least at the WC, we under promised. These 6 out of 6 is going to lead to us reverting to over promising and under achieving.

It's so much better to under promise and over achieve - great example being Koeman - than the other way around - great example being Brenda.

Yeah as much as I dispise him Redknapp would of been a good fit for England manager instead of Boring Roy for the last two tournaments. Was never going to happen with his dodgy past though, tit.

Rednapp works on a % basis - buy loads of players, shove them into a side and with luck some of them will pay off - if they can work out how to play together.

If he was England manager, he'd just pick whoever the press were clamouring for, and if it didn't work he'd sulk and blame them "I done what they all wanted, not my fault who we've got ain't good enough, blah blah".

I remember when genial Joe Mercer was England manager - he just picked the best we had and told them to go out and play - and he had a little success with that. He was replaced by Don Revie, who turned otherwise good players (when used to their strengths) into nervous wrecks with his "tactics" - He even had Mick Channon defending at right back on occasions expecting him to do defensive headers! Mick ended up not knowing what the f* he was supposed to be doing. As an International manager, Revie made good players (who he didn't have time to brainwash) often look poor.

Roy just can't make up his mind which way to do it. When we had Gerrard, Lampard and Cole etc., he'd just pick them and hope. Without them he instead has to try to carry off the illusion he has some modern tactical nous. Playing almost everyone out of position is his attempt to con us that it's all clever stuff.

That's why I think Redknapp would be better as he would have his way, the spurs team he had was very good and actually twice broke into the top 4 which looking back at it now was an incredible achievement, they were also enjoyable to watch whereas since he was sacked its gone downhill. One thing he is good at is picking good players, forget QPR but at the skates and and spurs he got teams to win the F.A cup/get in the top 4 whether that was affordable to the club or not it wouldn't matter in international management.

.think the majority of the media would agree with that statement, but I wonder what would they say if Ronald K. was up for the job in 2017......?

Slovenia twice, Lithuania, Estonia, San Marino and an admittedly decent win away to Switzerland - who Hodgson also used to manage. Being better than five mediocre-to-poor opponents and one mediocre-to-good one. Not really sure how that shows signs of improvement since the World Cup.

Redknapp wouldn't be able to buy players, wouldn't bother with tactics, and would be interested for as long as he could make money out of it. He'd be an absolute waste of time. He was successful at Spurs, as with everywhere else he was successful, by buying lots of players to improve the team and playing them, as well as fluking his way into Bale becoming one of the best players in the world after nearly loaning him to a Championship side on arrival.

I am absolutely delighted that Redknapp isn't, hasn't been and never will be England manager.

I still kind of like Roy but I think mainly because he isn't Redknapp and genuinely don't really think there is anyone else who would do any better right now. Pardew? Southgate? Big Sam? Gerry Francis? (I am not interested in a Sergio Managerino foriegner in the chair)

We're going to qualify obviously, and we'll bomb out either in the group stage if we get a s hit draw, or in the knockout stage at the point we play a decent nation. In my head that is going to happen whoever is in charge, and Roy is in the chair so let him get on with the inevitable crushing disappointment next summer.

I don't think anything you said is good argument for him not being England manager, just reeks of an opinion blinded by hate.

He wouldn't be able to buy players, he'll be able to choose whoever he wants (who is English) so he isn't trying to get this "triffic" bargain from somewhere and isn't ruining club finances

He won't bother with tactics? I think he just might?

He won't be interested when he can't make money out of it? I'm pretty sure they don't pay Roy Hodgson peanuts and it would probably interest him more than any job in the world

So that's what your argument is for him being an absolute waste of time?

I actually just think it would of been a good fit

Anyway he's a clip I just saw on the Telly to do with this very subject!

In which bits of his career has Redknapp demonstrated good coaching or tactical skills? Operating well without wheeling and dealing? Being a trustworthy human being?

Partly inclined to agree. He doesn't have the bottle or the brain for the detail and daily grind of club management; but in terms of coddling stars and getting the best out of a team for one-off games, the essence of international football, think he'd be more successful. Also think that his tricks of the trade -basically the El Tel effect- rub off better on English players. Redknapp is the kind of the manager who would try to coax John Terry out of retirement -and probably succeed.

Terrible link, btw.
