Saints set to sign Juanmi - according to SUR, daily newspaper of Malaga

They will have known about his low contract fee already, in Spain those aren't exactly a secret.

Indeed, I thought the same. Just paraphrasing what the talk sport chap was saying. Maybe I misheard and he was talking more about the fact that saints being so close to a deal would alert other clubs to step in. All pretty obvious stuff I agree

Yeah, sounds right for an 'expert' on TalkSport though.

Did he actually give any insight on what sort of player he is/if he'd be a top player, or is he just focused on who the Top clubs could sign?

Have we had any spanish players ?

Idiakez, Falque, I think we had a player called Jacinta Ela Elene or something that was Spanish.

Oh, and the one we already have on our books that is masquerading as English - Jay Rodriguez! ;-)

No real insight from what I heard. Just said that Malaga were planning on building their team around him this season and that he was laughed at in Spain 2 weeks ago when he said he would be leaving for the premier league.

Sounds like he is very highly rated though. I still don't believe he's our striker signing fwiw.

Just spoken to a Spanish sport journalist about him (what type of player, what can he bring, is it a good move for us and him) - that, plus some details, are here...

Nice work. Enjoyed reading that.

Guess that blows my "he's not a striker" theory out the water though :)

Sounds like it's been going on for weeks, so pretty sure he's ours tbh.

But its not like when two clubs agree a fee and get exclusivity. Its a free for all for anyone who meets the release clause - and its common for agents to delay signing on the dotted line whilst they wait and see if any better offers are flushed out.

Good little write up. Doesn't really add up to his lack of goals if he's a striker, knows where the goal is so much etc.

Anyone know how many of his appearances have been a full 90 and how much time he's actually spent on the pitch? What's his goals/per minute ratio?

I can't give you anything on full 90s and goals per minute, but of those 79 appearances - 43 have been starts and 36 have been from the bench.

Cheers. So a goal every 3 games, not too dusty considering his age/team over those seasons.

Not bad at all - Pelle's average for the league was 270 last season going by the same data (Transfermarkt). Juanmi doesn't look like he sets up many though - 2 assists last season, none the season before. I note Pelle only got 2 last season as well - considering Lambert got into double figures the season before, it perhaps explains a bit about why we sometimes looked a bit disjointed in attack.

If he's comfortable anywhere in the front 3 of a 4-3-3, why would we necessarily need another striker?

Because we still won't have a out n out goal scorer, Rodriguez got most of his from the left, Pelle is our 'Target man', Long isn't going to get more than 10 goals a season n plays wide most of the time. I might be being greedy but if you say Jay Rod, Long and Juanmi mostly play wide or behind the front man that leaves Pelle as our only player who regularly plays the lone striker role!

The more I look into him the more he seems like Bojan at Stoke, both in playing style and physically. And hopefully he'll have the same sort of impact too. Think this completes our work in the final third for this summer (Jay Rod extension, and Juanmi signed). That would mean the following players competing for 3-4 positions on the pitch at any one time:

Pelle, Rodriguez, Mane, Tadic, Juanmi, Long, JWP.

RW-Long/Tadic AM-Tadic/Juanmi/JWP LW-Mane/Rodriguez

ST-Pelle/Long/Rodriguez

Looks pretty good depth to be fair, but just lacking that 15/20 goals a year striker unless we rely on Rodriguez coming back even better and playing up top?

1. Only two new signings scored more than Pelle last season: Costa and Sanchez.

2. Which of Jay Rod's goals were scored from the left? Most were scored as a central player with Lambert moving wide.

How much do you think a 20 goal a season striker costs?

What's wrong with Pellè, Rodriguez or Mane's goal return?
