There's meant to be further reports in the Spanish press today that we're very close to signing this lad?

Yep looks very definite from thse two articles less than 30 minutes old. Beat Aston Villa and Real Sociedad to the signature apparently. Currently at Saints for a medical.

1. Malaga striker Juanmi march to Southampton after the English club decided to pay the termination clause seven million contained in the commitment of the player with the Andalusian club. The negotiations lasted several weeks, but was closed down yesterday. The player is now in England for a medical examination and sign his new contract.

At the last moment, two other clubs, Aston Villa and Real Sociedad i ntentaron recruitment, but the agreement with Southampton footballer was already closed.

Juanmi, 22, made his debut this season with the Spanish team of Vicente del Bosque , who also cited him for training two weeks ago when, by international commitments, did not complete the squad for the matches against Costa rich and Belarus.

Juanmi, which debuted at Malaga at age 16 in Copa del Rey, with Muñiz on the bench, played 38 games this season with Malaga and scored eight goals.

2. The Malaga can close this week a series of operations that may lead to the departure of three players and the arrival of three other players. As reported by the newspaper Sur, which could leave are Juanmi, and Samu Samu Castillejo and signings, the Juan Carlos, Javi Guerra and Charles.

Chapter outputs can inaugurate Juanmi , for whom English Southampon in the coming hours would pay seven million euros in which it is established its clause. As for Samu and Samu Castillejo , the agreement between Malaga and Villarreal both players seem to be very harnessed and ready to close.

If these three operations eventually crystallize the box costasoleño expects to enter a number for all of them to be around 18 million euros. Figure that aim to enhance its workforce, aiming above all because in bolster his front.

In this sense they gain strength names Juan Carlos, Javi Guerra and Charles . The first plays for Sporting Braga after passing through the Granada and arrive on loan. Javi Guerra has a contract with the Cardiff and the player should reach an agreement to terminate it and subsequent commitment with Malaga. For his part, Charles has a contract with Celta and would have to reach an agreement with the Vigo set to incorporate the costasoleña template.

Not the sort of player I thought we'd target. Be interesting to see how / where he fits in.
Mane is off to Bayern Munich and this is his replacement.

Either that or just an additional option for the 50+ plus games we'll have this season. But I agree, not the obvious point of strengthening I'd have gone for, I'd still like a properly creative "No.10" type, guess there aren't too many Prem quality ones around at an affordable price.

I know nothing of Juanmi other than what it says on his Wikipedia page! One cap for Spain. That's good. He ranks alongside English luminaries with one cap such as Ricketts, Walters, Richardson, Jeffers and Nugent. Of course if he's better than those, which he probably is, he'll get more.

Thats what I get from his Wikipedia page. :-)

Kevin Davis as well. We should also remember Phil Boyer and Charlie George gained only 1 cap, and at present Jay Rod. I hate to mention him but our very own CB Fry is also singular in terms of caps.

Not Saints related but the brilliantly named Segar Bastard gained his only cap in 1880 against Scotland. I remember the game well, chanting his name, apparently later he became a referee, hence the origin of the expression, "the referees a jolly nice chap". http://www.englandstats.com/players.php?pid=85

Perhaps more Djuricic replacement... He might turn out to be our own little David Silva !

Found this description of him:

Predominantly playing as a secondary striker, he can also operate as an attacking midfielder or a left winger. At just 5 ft 6 1/2 in and 63 kg, Juanmi has a slight frame but possesses excellent ball control, has great dribbling ability and lightning acceleration. As you would expect from a Spanish youngster, he is technically strong, has good vision and is a good passer of the ball.

This season Juanmi has also added a great work rate to his game and is relentless in his pressing, this has led to defensive mistakes and has created numerous goal scoring opportunities, as seen with his goals against Barcelona and Levante.

either getting him instead of Djuricic. That is me hoping rather than anything as I really want us to sign Austin (which I cannot see happening at all if we bolster the front line with this fella)

I'd say they'd still be room for another striker, Bats. I suppose a lot depends on how Ronald views J-Rod.

Hope he's more of a forward whereby he is comfortable anywhere in the front 3 in a 4-3-3 or behind the striker, then we still buy an out n out scorer like Charlie Austin.

If he's comfortable anywhere in the front 3 of a 4-3-3, why would we necessarily need another striker?

The more I look into him the more he seems like Bojan at Stoke, both in playing style and physically. And hopefully he'll have the same sort of impact too. Think this completes our work in the final third for this summer (Jay Rod extension, and Juanmi signed). That would mean the following players competing for 3-4 positions on the pitch at any one time:

Pelle, Rodriguez, Mane, Tadic, Juanmi, Long, JWP.

I'd be happy with that, but you can already hear the wailing if we don't get Austin.

I think it gives us plenty of variety and depth, potentially the only question mark is the central role as a long striker as Jay Rod isn't proven in that role (for me) and Long isn't the best up there. But that aside we have lots of options for mixing up our style and personnel and that's a nice thing to have. Not much of a pathway for any kids though, but there isn't anyone knocking on the door yet so that's ok.
