Turning phone boxes into an Art Gallery

I'm planning to open a art new gallery in Southampton, it will be pretty small as it's going to be in a couple of phone boxes.

We've got a small grant for it but hoping to get this other one which would fund it for a few years but we need to get public votes in order to be awarded it. It would be free to visit and should be open 24/7.

Hoping that anyone here interested art, culture or a good local community project might take a couple of mins to sign-up and vote for it. https://foundation.onefamily.com/projects/k6-gallery-3/

We're on facebook & twitter (/K6GallerySoton & @K6_Gallery) for anyone interested in following the project. Still working on a proper website though.

Those phone boxes are across the road from where my mum lives. I made a call from there when my phone had died and couldnt remember the code to get through the gate!

There are searchable databases of grant making bodies - and there are hundreds of them. Sometimes the local library or the local Council for Voluntary Service will have free access to services like this one http://www.trustfunding.org.uk

Also try these two organisations - both have the capacity to make small grants quickly and without a lot of admin.

One of the first questions they are bound to ask is "How will you stop it being vandalised / works stolen?"

We've got applications in for another couple of grants, but this one's by far the biggest. Esmee Fairbairn's one that I've had my eye on. I'll take a look at the other links - thanks for sharing them.

In terms of vandalism - I think we're just going to have to cross our fingers and hope that people appreciate that we're trying to do something good and don't vandalise them. Some of the money raised will be kept aside for maintenance of the phone boxes. If it does become an issue then we've applied to have locks fitted to them, although this was more so that we could also have outward facing exhibitions like this one in Edinburgh https://portylightbox.wordpress.com/.But it does offer the extra security should we need it.

And in terms of artwork getting stolen - the main plan at present is to have a simple free standing structure that fits snuggly inside the phone boxes that we can either screw down framed artwork to or paste artwork to - in both cases we'd refrain from using original artworks and would use prints (of photos, illustrations etc).

Thanks

I've often thought bus shelters would be an interesting one as well. I just like that with BT's 'adopt a kiosk' scheme there's an opportunity to create an official space for art that the council won't come along and 'clean up' as we'd have ownership over the space.

I quite like the idea of this exhibition that was on in Exeter a few years back as part of Unexpected Festival. All the photos in the exhibition were displayed in bus shelters around the city. Theo Simpson: Lesser Known Architecture, 2013

  • 2 weeks later...

One more day left to vote if anyone's interested?

Here's the project featured in the echo: http://www.dailyecho.co.uk/news/13343710.Is_turning_these_British_icons_into_art_galleries_a_good_call_/?ref=twtrec

And here's the link to vote (we're currently 13th and need just a few more votes to ensure we finish in the top 15 that get funded): https://foundation.onefamily.com/projects/k6-gallery-3/
