Saints and the Champions League

When did Celtic go a long way?

Depends if you think the last 16 of the CL is "a long way" - they've got that far in 2006/7 (lost to Barcelona), and 2012/13 (beat and lost to Barcelona in the group, lost to Juventus 5-0 on aggregate in an absolute cake-walk in the knockout round).

Given that I think we're comfortably better than current "no-one to compete with domestically" Celtic, I'd be happy enough if we could beat their performance last season of getting to the last 32 of the Europa League before losing by one goal to the worst Inter Milan side in 60 years.

As an aside, it is bizarre that now they have to go through the CL qualifiers and usually drop into the EL they get to play nearly as many European games losing in the last 32 as they did losing in the UEFA Cup final in 2003, or winning the European Cup in '67.

Chelsea won the Champions League with an interim Manager after being completely dominated by Barca in the semis and playing Bayern in their stadium in the final. As far as I could see, in the semis they relied on disciplined defending, moment of skill (Ramirez goal???) and luck (Messis penalty miss). In the final they relied on the big game player (Drogs header). Anything is possible and anyone can beat anyone on the day, but the chances are, no one will have a team able to go head to head with clubs like Barca/Real/Bayern etc. If a club like Saints ever got there, they'd have to rely on concentration, teamwork, disciplined defending and pace on the break.

This alone is one of the most deluded sentences I've ever read on this site.

Are you telling me that the 31 time winners of the Italian league are better than Southampton, whose honours include an FA cup 40 years ago and the JPT? Surely not?

I haven't been to this site since the meltdown it experienced last Summer and this is one of the first things I read on my return. **** me.

Juventus have not been brilliant lately and I was responding to the point about Barcelona. Before you start taking the p*ss perhaps you should take the time to make sure you know what you are taking the p*ss out of. **** me

What do you mean in that they haven't been brilliant lately? They've won the last 4 Serie A titles by some distance.

in the champions league final 12 years ago. who knows where they would have been had they not been caught out and relegated etc after that.

Who knows indeed, but they are not in the same league as the Barcelonas and Real Madrids as the moment are they?

I don't really see what we're discussing here to be honest? What's the relevance of this?

Juventus are a huge club, a hell of a lot bigger than we will, ever, ever, ever be. So, yeah.

As ever the original point is being lost which is for all the talk of CL football we are a million miles away from ever competing at the highest level.

does winning it only mean brilliant?

does that mean we had a horrendous season last year as we were WAY OFF the title?

We won the cup final once. That is what people remember. Clubs have good seasons but at the end of the day the whole point is to actually win trophies isn't it? Only fans of clubs remember the nearlys. History remembers the winners.

Italy's most successful club of the 20th century,[23] and the most successful club in the history of Italian football,[21] Juventus have won the Italian League Championship, the country's premier football club competition and organised by Lega Nazionale Professionisti Serie A (LNPA), a record 31 times and have the record of consecutive triumphs in that tournament (five, between 1930–31 and 1934–35).[39] They have also won the Italian Cup, the country's primary cup competition, a record ten times, and becoming the first team to retain the trophy successfully with their triumph in the 1959–60 season.[83] In addition, the club holds the joint-record for Italian Super Cup wins with six, along with AC Milan, the most recent coming in 2013.

Overall, Juventus have won 58 official competitions, more than any other team in the country: 47 domestic trophies, which is also a record, and 11 official international competitions,[84] making them, in the latter case, the second most successful Italian club in European competition.[85] The club is fourth in Europe and eighth in the world with the most international titles won officially recognised by their respective association football confederation and Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA).

That's broadly comparable to our FA Cup win in 1976, I'd say.

It's slightly different qualifying for the CL and winning it. Qualifying for the CL is pretty hard for us, a freak season may achieve it, but we'll never get far in it.

Of course we're a million miles from that level, we always will be. There's no discussion here, it's just obvious.

I just don't get all these posts knocking the OP for simply getting a reality check. The past few years have been an amazing rise in our fortunes. It has become easy to become a little deluded about the prospects of our team, and seeing the Euro final was simply a reminder of how far we would have to go to realise the completion of any daydreams we may have.

Sometimes, we need our dreams to be reigned in a little, and that's all the OP was talking about really. So many people on here want to bash others simply for the sake of it without even taking a moment to consider their point of view and the reason for saying what they do.

I am so pleased to see that there are some people here bright enough to get the point. It is a shame that the point scorers and p*ss takers are up to their usual tiresome tricks.

What talk? No one ever thought we were close to competing with the best in the Champions league. Except you.

"The point" is you've realised we're not going to win the Champions League.

"The point" is also that the rest of humanity managed to work that out eons ago.

In some cases the pi ss taking is completely justified.

That's "the point".

Are you "bright enough" to get that?

Not sure what Arsenal have got to do with it? There have been plenty of discussions about us building up to becoming a CL contender at some point.

Well they get into it every year and they are still no where near winning it. I for one am glad I support a team where qualifying for it would be a huge achievement instead of just par for the year.

I would like to be supporting a club which goes from where qualifying for the CL would be a huge achievement to one where it is just par for the year.

This.

Not this.

Basically, we're not ever going to become at regular Champions League proposition and as far as I'm concerned, good.

I dunno. I remember who the runners up were in 1976. :)

So the whole point of the thread is we are nowhere near as good as Juventus, who are nowhere near as good as Barcelona and Real Madrid. How insightful.

Apparently you need to be really "bright" to understand this incredibly complex point.

I know you desperately trying to build yourself up here, but his summary is precisely what you say in your opening post.

Stop kidding yourself that you've said anything other than the cringingly obvious.

That will never happen though. Unless we have a city style takeover which will render our club plastic with players like Yaya Toure.
