I worked at the Spinnaker Tower one summer, and I still work for the company that manages it. Needless to say the staff are not impressed

Our guildhall clock tower plays the Pompey chimes every hour, so this feels like sweet revenge to me!

Not to mention the blue lighting on the Itchen Bridge....

Red is the most appropriate colour for something that, from a certain angle looks like a giant vagina.

This was my first thought when I saw it. Then I wondered whether Portsmouth lady gardens looked the same as normal ladies'...

I live in Portsmouth, so can't wait to have a little chat with all the skates I work with. Lovely.

It's the best known thing in Portsmouth these days, and the most recognisable land fixture, so for it to be red & white is brilliant (from a football fans point of view)

As someone alluded to above, I had to check the date...

My first thought was it resembles the mouth of a skate fish...

Doesn't it have one of those glass platforms where you can stand and stare at the abyss? Steve Lewis should sponsor this and call it the Veho Saints/Pompey "Mind the Gap" feature!!

It did last time I heard it

It plays "O God Our Help in Ages Past" written by Sir Isaac Watts one of the great Hymn writers, who was born in Southampton.

Yes, that's every 4 hours but the rest of the time it plays the 'chimes' followed by the hour markers.

Ridiculous how everyone got taken in by a stunt so obviously designed to prevent a backlash against Emirates sponsoring the thing in the first place.

Emirates are only paying £3m to sponsor it for 5 years, which doesn't really seem like a lot to me...

It looks like the going rate, if somethinglike this has one. You could spend £5m of your advertising pot in a more effective way than this.

But this isn't really about advertising basics: Emirates are on a mission to completely normalise/ingratiate themselves into British society, especially the upper end of it. So their investment in this and involvement in world sailing all part of that.

So a good deal all round.

Makes you laugh, they should be glad a global brand are willing to invest millions into local coucil through sponsorship therefore helping to provide more local services to the deprived residents , but instead they campaign against it! Guarantee first sign of cuts they'll be ip in arms!

I didn't realise a prank like this could be so cheap TBH.

Supposing 30,000 Saints fans were to put up £100 each. A lot you say but for a 5 year deal that's only £20 each annually. Wish we'd known this sooner, we could have had all sorts on it.

Peanuts compared to the 30 million a year revenue the football club generates for the city :mcinnes:

I think it would be further enhanced by a strip of black just above the "legs". I don't know why just seems as though it would be an improvement.

As a gynaecologist I think the black bit should be the top ...........

Is this piece of porn-inspired kitsch appropriate for an ISIS-funding micro-state, given that certain elements of Islam like to cover women completely in black, even to the extent of a mesh veil over the eye slot? ... Now that's an idea.... Huge black piece of sheeting, anyone?

Is this what goes down as a legitimate part of the sales effort, or as (very) conspicuous corporate consumption of surplus profit?

Brilliant marketing by Emirates. Hats off to them for all the free publicity they have gained both locally and nationally by this ploy of suggesting that the Spinnaker Tower will be painted in the colours of the Skate's rival football team. A very well conceived idea, well executed. Not only did it elicit the participation of the local community, but also that of the neighbouring areas and the local MPs as well. Having stirred the pot, they have played a blinder by their munificence in listening to local opinion and back-tracking on something they probably never intended to do in the first place.

Just like to point out that this is not just UK news

(Just a historical perspective note, Emirates is the UK's finest airline. It was founded by 3 guys who worked for BA, had an idea, took it to the Board who said don't be stupid, that is a ridiculous idea. They came out here and got The Man's attention. The rest as they say is history.

They have been looking for areas to invest sponsorship budget since (wisely) ditching their agreement (something like $280mil I think) with FIFA last November)
