Adkins is back

As I've said, his ONLY objective for the season when he took over was to win League 1, he didn't do it. This was an objective set by the club

So you're trying to say that Nicola , the must ruthless egomaniac ever to run the club, even pipping Rupert to that honour , had ONLY one objective . That this ruthless heartless bar steward set Nigel an objective which he then failed at . If your theory is correct why wasn't Nigel sacked after promotion then ? Was Nicola too soft, did he feel sorry for Nigel ? Or are you talking complete and utter pony ?

He felt as if NA was the best bloke to get us to the PL.

Just to clarify, I never said the board expected to win the Championship. That was merely my opinion based upon us being at the top for so much of the season.

So there we have it finally. Not the board's expectation that Adkins should ensure promotion from both divisions as champions, just little old yours.

You know for a fact who was on the board's radar to be manager ahead of Adkins, but this main point that you are arguing is based on nothing concrete at all. The board were prepared to achieve promotion back to the Premier Division within 5 years and you think that Adkins failed because he managed to get us there well ahead of schedule. Well done for such an imaginative perspective.

In fairness you're not trying to pretend.

You're just pretending.

The board expected us to win League 1, as did I. Not exactly a shock that 2 people have the same opinions. How many times do I need to say this.

The Championship I expected us to win around xmas time after our great start. Perhaps read what people write instead of skim-reading. I've never said the board expected us to win the Championship.

We'll all sit cross-legged on the floor in a circle while you regale us with stories from your time at Nicola Cortese's right hand side.

You're, like, so in the know and I for one am really jealous and stuff.

Yes, you and St Lard. But the implication from being in such a minority that you are probably wrong, has to be tempered by the fact that you were a confidant of Cortese, therefore privy to information that none of the rest of us had.

It's opinions, you can't have a wrong opinion.

Not a confidant of NC at all.

Breaking News: The manager of Sheffield United Nigel Adkins has been sacked.

Just in time for next week!

Shame for him, I went to one of their games a few weeks ago vs Barnsley, and they had a real lack of quality. No pace, no creativity. Not sure where he goes from here...

Nigel came to Saints at an opportune time to inherit a squad which was too good for League 1 and subsequently too good not to be promoted to the Prem. He was likeable, effusive and great with the team spirit side of things, and his legacy at Saints can never be airbrushed. However his coaching and judgement in the transfer market had to be questioned, particularly if you look at his time at Reading and the Blades. Cortese probably made the right call. I always thought that his trusted Assistant (tall fellow, name escapes me) was not up to the job and was something of a lead weight for NA.

Great guy, Nigel. A Southampton legend, but his future in Football management is looking very shaky.

Adkins getting us out of the championship at the first attempt was no mean feat. Indeed, it was a huge achievement. The most optimistic on here had us sneaking into the playoffs while the majority had us midtable (or worse).

Future England manager, apparently......

A real shame actually, he seems such a decent guy and I always felt he was a very good manager in the making.

A mate of mine is a due hard S****horpe fan, and he was jealous as hell when he joined: often saying Nige was too good for Saints!

I'm sure he'll find himself another rome before long.

Shame. His stock was so high when he left Saints and the decision to join Reading looks as foolhardy now as it did then. He'll find another L1 job before too long though.

As for Sheff Utd, a sixth straight season in League 1. Maybe the problems are more structural than just the manager?

Managers sometimes just don't fit a particular club. They do well at one, and people assume they'll do just as well anywhere else. Hoddle was a case in point, his stock here was very high when he jumped ship for spurs, how long did he last there?

I had us down for promotion in pre season... but then i had complete faith in Adkins. He had a good crop of players and he delivered. At sheffield and Reading he had crap and delivered a fair result regardless. He achieves was is realistic, expectations are another thing.

'too good to not be promoted to PL'? FFS some of our fans are clueless and becoming so entitled.

Indeed, if you are meaning your post to the news....

His dismissal was always going to happen......he's not very good.

I appreciate what he did for saints, but he underachieved with us.

We should've been league one champions.....and won the championship.

He had everything at his disposal.

He was a lucky chap.

I hate to disappoint....I've been quite busy posting on here,so don't give me the usual 'only posts on an Adkins thread'

I'm right though...aren't I?...reference Good old Nige.

The next England manager....the new messiah!

Not a surprise at all. I think he's being found out as not all what people make him out to be. He lost the support of the fanbase at Sheff Utd long time ago due to his tactics and substitutions. Regardless of how good their squad is, they've spent big money and should have at least made the play-offs.

Lets be realistic about him.

- Did well at Scunny

- Inherited the best side ever assembled in the history of the 3rd tier when he came to Saints and achieved the bare minimum needed

- Did well to get us out of the Championship. Yes we had a good side but we still needed to do the job.

- Shakey start to PL life, started to pick up when (righly) replaced my MP (right decision, wrong way to do it)

- Went to Reading almost took them down 2 leagues, talking to RFC fans, they're still struggling to make up for his management.

- Took Sheff Utd job, and failed.

Nice guy, good man manager.

Tactically inept and transfers are bemusing.

He'll get another job in L1 (seen he's been linked to Northampton) his next move is crucial for his career.

FFS. He took us to successive promotions. Bettering Ted Bates achievement taking from 3rd div to 1st div. Show some respect people. At the players dinner even Jose Fonte said they didn't expect to be promoted from the Championship at first attempt - that they were targeting the play offs so any suggestion he under achieved is wide of the mark. There is a suggestion that he had taken us as far as he could hence the change by Cortese. Hard though that decision was, it proved the right one for us. Would he have progressed had he stayed? We'll never know.
