Yorkshire Saint Posted 2 June, 2015 Posted 2 June, 2015 Good luck to the guy http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/32964867
Beckenham Saint Posted 2 June, 2015 Posted 2 June, 2015 Good luck to him. Great manager for us and a true gentleman. Will now watch Sheffield as I did Reading as a result of him being there.
LuckyNumber7 Posted 2 June, 2015 Posted 2 June, 2015 Wish him all the best, a better fit for him than Reading was. Hope he does for them what he did for us.
the saint in winchester Posted 2 June, 2015 Posted 2 June, 2015 "Set to appoint" BBC Sport understands. Hope he does get the job. He is a motivator and works well at L1 and Championship level.
hasper57saint Posted 2 June, 2015 Posted 2 June, 2015 Good Luck Nigel.I'll be watching out for Sheffield United results now.
Tom28 Posted 2 June, 2015 Posted 2 June, 2015 Glad he's got a decent club like that. He'll do well there. Can see them challenging for promotion to the prem again in 3/4 years with Nige at the helm.
ericofarabia Posted 2 June, 2015 Posted 2 June, 2015 What odds getting Billy Sharp bak on the bus to his Spiritual Home as his first signing? Hope he also brings a bit of class to the club after the way their bench acted in The league cup.
Mowgli Posted 2 June, 2015 Posted 2 June, 2015 Very sad. **** club. He is worth so much more than that.
CB Fry Posted 2 June, 2015 Posted 2 June, 2015 Hope he also brings a bit of class to the club after the way their bench acted in The league cup. Which was how?
doddisalegend Posted 2 June, 2015 Posted 2 June, 2015 Happy for him. Wonder if he will bring in any of his old saints boys as transfers?
sussexsaint Posted 2 June, 2015 Posted 2 June, 2015 Happy for him and really chuffed that he was invited back a couple of games ago. His tweet following that was immensely touching. Always a Saint
eelpie Posted 2 June, 2015 Posted 2 June, 2015 Very sad. **** club. He is worth so much more than that. He will make Sheffield United a great club again.
Bucks Saint Posted 2 June, 2015 Posted 2 June, 2015 Very sad. **** club. He is worth so much more than that. WTF? Very big club that has been through some difficult times. No divine right that they should do well, but remember West Ham and the FA. Much more recently, their fans were very decent when I was up there all day before the match this season. As they were at SMS when we stayed up in the Championship on the last day. Good luck to Nigel and them
Brave Sir Robin Posted 2 June, 2015 Posted 2 June, 2015 Strikes me as a good fit. I can definately seeing him doing well there. Might even get them to the Prem
Batman Posted 2 June, 2015 Posted 2 June, 2015 Good appointment for them He will also have a full pre season and hopefully, get a couple of players in they will expect promotion this year though, so pressure and all that

Good luck to Nigel and them I came from a family of Wednesday fans so whilst I never supported them myself, it does feel a bit like he's gone over to the dark side. Equivalent of joining Portsmouth (who some would argue are also a big club...)
Mabes Posted 2 June, 2015 Posted 2 June, 2015 Very sad. **** club. He is worth so much more than that. AboUt his level to be fair.
Tamesaint Posted 2 June, 2015 Posted 2 June, 2015 Which was how? http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/30592754
supersonic Posted 2 June, 2015 Posted 2 June, 2015 Very similar situation to that of his appointment at Saints. Anything but promotion is a failure. He's taken over the best team/squad in the league and should win the league. Genuinely think he failed with us in League 1 for not winning the title. It's a good fit for him, yet also a bad fit. If they do well it'll be what's expected, if they struggle he'll be under pressure. Decent club and fans, probably deserve to be in the Championship because of the size of the club. Good luck to both NA and SU anyway.
CB Fry Posted 2 June, 2015 Posted 2 June, 2015 http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/30592754 I'm over it.
doddisalegend Posted 2 June, 2015 Posted 2 June, 2015 jonno quick return to sheffield? Wouldn't be surprised throw in Billy Sharp and a surprise return to English football for Guly......
captainchris Posted 2 June, 2015 Posted 2 June, 2015 Wouldn't be surprised throw in Billy Sharp and a surprise return to English football for Guly...... Made me laugh ;-))) good call
SarniaSaint Posted 2 June, 2015 Posted 2 June, 2015 Good luck to the guy...was a great manager for us then hit his ceiling.......there seems to be something wrong at Sheff U ........maybe he can sort it out.......who knows ain't Saints related
jjsaint Posted 3 June, 2015 Posted 3 June, 2015 I thought he'd be odds on to manage Liverpool as the ticks all the boxes: he's from the general area, he spent time at Southampton and he's been sacked by Reading.

I was about to say "so why did Clough get so long when he didn't get promotion in more than one season if that's 'failure'?" and then you came out with that gem about what you define as failure (given that we were already 8 points behind the leaders and in 22nd place when Adkins took over, and finished 3 behind the winners - but THIRTEEN ahead of the team that was top when he arrived), so I can just ignore the whole thing now, cheers.

Let's not forget how he failed to win the league but did then take us straight back to the Premier league whilst the winners of the league now sit mid table in championship. What a failure.

We had 41 games still to play when he was appointed, 3 more than in a whole Premier League season. We also had the strongest team in the league by an absolute country mile, I'd even go as far as saying our squad of that season was the strongest that the 3rd tier of English football has ever seen. Anything but promotion in that season would be deemed as a failure by most, for me (an ambitious fan) we should have won the league. Asking the strongest team in the league to close an 8 point gap in 41 points should be no problem.

Adkins got very lucky with SFC.....not the other way round. He had an incredible array of talent to choose from in comparison to our competitors, yet he still fell short of what he should've achieved. supersonic Posted 3 June, 2015 Posted 3 June, 2015 My point is your "three games more than a Premier League season" argument is the ramblings of a retard. please explain how it is? My referral to the number of games and comparing it to the length of a PL season is in anticipation of someone saying "but when he took over we had already played x games..."
Turkish Posted 3 June, 2015 Posted 3 June, 2015 I remember the days when people on here panicking Liverpool would try and get Adkins. Can someone remind me at what point in the last 2 1/2 years Adkins went from being the next great English manager, the new Alex ferguson and a shoe in for the England job to someone who is a great fit for Sheffield United?
S-Clarke Posted 3 June, 2015 Posted 3 June, 2015 The people who hit adkins with the ''he didn't win the league'' stick (saint_lard only tbh). Have you considered where the teams that won the league are now? They are both languishing at the bottom of the NPC. So winning the league was actually pretty irrelevant for both of them. Whilst it's nice to have honors, the rate in which we've progressed since is of much greater quality. Maybe he did have good quality players to work with, but those 2 years under Adkins were terrific. We played an attacking brand of football, scored tons of goals and broke so many records. He created a winning mentality and the players all bought into that and the environment he created allowed them to fulfill their undoubted potential, which is why we are where we are now. Iv'e seen a fair few clubs in the lower leagues who seemingly have lots of money to splash on players, but fail to get over the line. The fact is that he was a good manager, he achieved 2 promotions and we are now sat in the top half of the premier league and in European competition. I think he laid some pretty strong foundations to have made this possible. No one is saying he was a world beater, but what I recognize is that he was a very important cog in our recent history - and thankfully the majority of supporters feel that way.

Batman Posted 3 June, 2015 Posted 3 June, 2015 (edited) Promotion from league 1 That season was the very minimum requirement. A league 1 side with Lallana, lambert, fonte, Davis, schneiderlin and chamberlain Jesus won't see a comparable side like that again in division 3. The season in the NPC was fantastic though Edited 3 June, 2015 by Batman

If you were really ambitious you wouldn't be bothered with these minor trophies, only the significant ones.
