redkeith Posted 24 May, 2015 Share Posted 24 May, 2015 Thought we played Ok today, Kelvin did well in goal, and we created a few chances, but unfortunately Long wasted the best one at nil-nil. I liked the way DJurcic turned and ran at them, much better for a no10, but his end product wasn't there. Before they go on holiday they need to practice playing against a team playing offside on the 18 yard line.
DuncanRG Posted 24 May, 2015 Share Posted 24 May, 2015 Bit of an anti-climax after the season we've had to rely on other results and a July qualifier to get into Europe. Ultimately has to go down as a disappointment considering the amazing position we had got ourselves in, but doesn't quite feel that way. Great time to support this club. Has anyone looked at who our Europa qualifying opponents could be if Arsenal win the cup?
S-Clarke Posted 24 May, 2015 Share Posted 24 May, 2015 (edited) Duncan got the exact word i was going to put - anti-climax, that's how it felt towards the end. In fact, most of the game felt a bit like that, a bit of huff and puff but not any real quality or massive intent to score a goal. It played out like an end of season game and I was a bit surprised. But for Djuricic - read Gaston. Looks good, but ultimately isn't suited to PL football. Too lightweight, I'd like us to steer well clear of him and Elia. I thought Pelle had a nightmare, but Long played well in the support role - but he just isn't a consistent enough finisher, we do need another of those in our side for sure. Lots to be pleased about this season, and it should be a much more relaxed end of season as opposed to last year. Let's hope we get some news on contracts in the next week or so and then sit back and see if we make Europe or not. But today - bit of a damp ending really, very anti-climatic. Andy Durman Posted 24 May, 2015 Share Posted 24 May, 2015 JWP was fantastic when he came on. Why couldn't we have a lucky ricochet like City got for their goal. A very fine line between winning and losing. Proud of Saints. They kept going to the end. The future bright. The futures Red and white.

Window Cleaner Posted 24 May, 2015 Share Posted 24 May, 2015 Thought we played well enough at times but we really do lack quality and composure at the sharp end. Window Cleaner Posted 24 May, 2015 Share Posted 24 May, 2015 Has anyone looked at who our Europa qualifying opponents could be if Arsenal win the cup? Won't be Feyenoord anyway, knocked out of the play-offs for the Europa places today, caved in in extra time apparently. That may weigh heavily on their finances, makes any projected Saints recruits a bit easier to get.

Leicestersaint Posted 24 May, 2015 Share Posted 24 May, 2015 We played quite well today but yet again failed to put our chances away and conceded two goals as we have done so often since Forster got injured. I don't think Elia or Djuricic are good enough. Davis simply does not score the number of goals we need from an attacking midfielder and neither does JWP. To make the next step, we need at least one new striker who scores goals and one or two midfielders who can score as well.

Baird of the land Posted 24 May, 2015 Share Posted 24 May, 2015 Thought it wasn't a bad display. A game we needed to take our chances when they came and long and Pelle didn't have the clinical finishes when it counted. No shame in losing away to city, the disappointing results came beforehand which left us a disappointing 7th(though 7 would have been successful before the season started)

corky morris Posted 24 May, 2015 Share Posted 24 May, 2015 First half we were very poor. Second half much better, but they could have been four or five up by then. Djuricic & Pelle were rubbish. Special mention for Kelvin Davies who made some outstanding saves. Disappointing, but still a great season.

Bucks Saint Posted 24 May, 2015 Share Posted 24 May, 2015 Think that new striker is called Jay Rod Think we will add another though. Jay Rod to play wide. Have to say in the first half he saved a nailed on goal shot from Aguero, as the ball went for the corner Aguero went up to Kelvin and congratulated him for a great save.......... Which I thought was a very sporting touch.
shurlock Posted 24 May, 2015 Share Posted 24 May, 2015 Whether they took their foot off the pedal or we bucked up, thought we deserved something in the second half. Mané was particularly dangerous and is going to be huge next season. We really need a striker who has a bit more burst in the box, that yard of pace to get a shot off. We threaded some lovely through balls today that another striker -dare I say it a Hernandez- would have lapped up - alas Pelle was either offside because he needed a headstart or he ran down blind alleys. Professor Posted 24 May, 2015 Share Posted 24 May, 2015 Back from the game. Thank you BA for easy travel. In the first half it looked to me as if only one team was likely to win and I'm afraid it wasn't us. City really did dominate the play and it was only due to determined defending and not a little luck that we were only one goal down at half time. I had a good view of Long's chance and it really was just a half chance as the defenders were closing him down and the shot he took which Hart saved was really his only option, so no fault of his. Second half more balanced but you could sense that City were content to be 1-0 up. The fact is that their squad is filled with talented, quality players and is virtually a world XI. To hold our own as well as we did and only lose 2-0 at their stadium was a credit to our players and coaches.

kaffeemeister Posted 25 May, 2015 Share Posted 25 May, 2015 I think I have to disagree with some of the Djuricic comments. He seem to want to give more in terms of going forward, compared to number 10's that have played in position (S Davis, JWP, Tadic) this season; he tries more through balls and is more energetic with the 1-2s near the box, and looks forwards rather than pass sidewards/backwards. Although his release clause seems a bit steep, and his evaluated price for us to buy him out (Sky sources suggest a clause in the loan contract gives Southampton the option to buy Djuricic in the summer for a fee of around £9m.) might be a bit too much for us to fork out. Best wishes to him whatever the summer outcome is.

People bag Shane Long ( i am not arguing either way) but I reckon the replacement Hull spent the money on (Hernandez) was very patchy. They may have stayed up if they hadnt sold him to Saints. So whilst they thought they may have cashed in and made some dosh... Just shows you how hard it is to get things right player wise.

Graffito Posted 25 May, 2015 Share Posted 25 May, 2015 They were much the better side first half. Dominated central midfield and were able to get the ball out to Kolarov and Milner which occupied Long and Mane and back in to the likes of Lampard and Silva who ran the show. Thought we missed MS in there. Dont know what happened second half, maybe just pushed forward more, but we were very good, except for the all important sticking the ****** in the net. I left the match feeling a sense of disappointment which hasn't left this morning. We were not top four material, as Man City's quality yesterday showed, but we were good enough for fifth. Professor Posted 25 May, 2015 Share Posted 25 May, 2015 Just read the on line reports of the match by the Daily Mail and The Guardian. From The Mail's report it didn't matter who Man City were playing as they only reported on, and photographed, one team. The Guardian, on the other hand has a well-balanced report that recognises the reality of the game, that City scored from a spectacular Lampard strike and that Saints remained in contention until the 87th minute. I'm pleased that I never waste money on buying the Daily Mail and this report has confirmed what a good decision that has been.

Wasn"t all that spectacular really, side footed home from what about 8 yards, now if Pellè or long could do that we'd probably have won about 4-1. John Boy Saint Posted 25 May, 2015 Share Posted 25 May, 2015 Thought it was very poor. It's never helped when the Away support is split over 2 levels as neither level can hear each other to sing as one and ramp up the noise. Window Cleaner Posted 25 May, 2015 Share Posted 25 May, 2015 Don't you mean stayed onside to do that? Well and that yes, there were occasions however when they were onside and they still missed or lobbed the ball softly to Hart. Still I expect Graziano had been reading in the papers how he's going to move to AC Milan or Fiorentina this summer and believed it to be true. Hasn't worked out yet that papers make up crap about all and sundry to fill their columns.

Lallana's Left Peg Posted 25 May, 2015 Share Posted 25 May, 2015 Started the game well but after we didn't take advantage of our chances Man City came back into it and when they pressured us we **** the bed and pumped it long. Didn't like the way we stood off them up to our own 18 yard box - it was asking for trouble. Second half much better, they were there for the taking but it didn't click in the final third. Mane was class, JWP looked nice when he came on too. Frustrating but we gave a half decent account of ourselves. Come on Arsenal!
Miltonaggro Posted 25 May, 2015 Share Posted 25 May, 2015 Not this game, they're good I know, but gutted at our recent away form. We've been generally so hard to beat the last couple of years but seem to have got into a bad habit away from home recently, and we've finished below a dire Liverpool team and average spurs side. I didn't think we'd be relying on others for european football. Yes it's a very good season but it would be dangerous to praise it too much and not learn from the mistakes. Outsiders might say 7th is the best we could hope for, but it's clear there was a real chance of at least 5th this season and we should have had it. I'd say first half of the season 9.5/10, second half 5/10. Spot on.
