spyinthesky Posted 20 May, 2015 Share Posted 20 May, 2015 Seems like yesterday At least MLG had a much better send off than Stevie G's last game As has been said many times before, no one could have written the script better for the winning goal v Arsenal Can vividly remember the crowd's reaction to Matts goal and the subsequent friendly with Brighton and my last visit for the celebration dinner on the pitch and wandering round after sitting on the deserted terraces trying to memorise my last views of the old ground. It is strange to think there there are many younger supporters who have no recollection of going to the Dell and/or watching MLT play
JackanorySFC Posted 20 May, 2015 Share Posted 20 May, 2015 I missed that game due to working a Saturday shift at John Lewis I couldn't swap. Not long after I left vowing never to working a Saturday again in my life, so far I've managed to be true to that. For Matt to score that goal in that way was exactly what the Dell and Le God deserved. Great ground (worth 10 points a season IMO), great memories. Still got my seat and a 12ft DRAPER ad' hoarding I somehow got back to Hedge End on the bus after the Brighton game!
Golden Balls Posted 20 May, 2015 Share Posted 20 May, 2015 Somehow ended up on the pitch celebrating Matts goal. Was already down the front of the lower west to get on the pitch at the final whistle. The goal went in and I was bundled on. Looked up and some bloke from the Archers was running towards me. We shared a magical jump/hung/fall by the corner flag before returning to the stand. Thing is I didn't even realise it was MLT that scored.
Georgie Posted 20 May, 2015 Share Posted 20 May, 2015 What a great moment MLT goal was. Vividly remember the ball hitting the back of the net. Split second silence whilst everyone just realised what had happened and then the place erupted. Glad I got to go to The Dell!
Patrick Bateman Posted 20 May, 2015 Share Posted 20 May, 2015 Brilliant day - was stuck up in the upper west, but genuinely thought the roof would come off when Matt scored, amazing! Can't believe that was 14 years ago ... !
lifeintheslowlane Posted 20 May, 2015 Share Posted 20 May, 2015 I somehow memorised the spot where Matt had swivelled to smash that ball into the net. It hadn't surprised me as I had imagined that exact climax to the final game in my mind many times in the week leading up to the game...just a physical confirmation of expectation. I was in the Milton halfway back just to the left of the goal so I had indelibly referenced the position on the pitch in my mind. After the final whistle against Brighton the following Saturday I walked straight onto the pitch and dug up that hallowed piece of turf. I nurtured and tended that piece of turf, (let-into my back garden lawn) for years. Despite the dog using it as a latrine in recent years I still like to think that historic piece of turf lives on in my garden...along with every other Saints fan who dug up their idea of where the historic spot was located. Stud mark of doom Posted 20 May, 2015 Share Posted 20 May, 2015 What a great moment MLT goal was. Vividly remember the ball hitting the back of the net. Split second silence whilst everyone just realised what had happened and then the place erupted. Glad I got to go to The Dell! That's how I remember it - a split second whilst everyone thought "did that really just happen?" And the delirium.
Saint137 Posted 20 May, 2015 Share Posted 20 May, 2015 Few photos here - that Arsenal game was absolutely mega. So poignant leaving that place but look how far we've come... https://flic.kr/s/aHsiDKdDWQ

John Boy Saint Posted 20 May, 2015 Share Posted 20 May, 2015 Couldn't get a ticket, ended up listening on Solent tears streaming after Matty scored (bloody Dave Merrington started it), as some consolation I had the foresight to book a Stadium tour for the following day for Me and my girls and all the matchday detritus was still lurking "back stage" it was like there had been one hell of a party post match. Got a few little souvenirs and because that was it for the season we were allowed on the pitch and given lots of time to lock in our memories. On the Tuesday I found out I could have gone as the chap who owned the off licence down the road had the Lino for the day as a regular customer, he gave him 2 complimentary tickets and he had been trying to get hold of me since the Friday night!!
