Targett & Ward-Prowse named in England U21 Euro squad

JWP gets stick for being a lightweight on the pitch in the majority of his games and for letting the game just pass him by rather than getting stuck in. Which is a shame because he has shown in glimpses that when he can be bothered and raises his game he does have the ability to make a contribution.

The most annoying thing I find about him though is his tendency to stop running and throw his arms up in the air as a player is going past him, it's like he's saying 'you're too good for me, off you go' rather than tracking the man and trying to get a challenge in. It leaves the defence overrun.

That and his constant backwards or sideways passing including those 30 yard first touch backpasses he likes doing.

He is incredibly frustrating to watch and needs to buck his ideas up to become more than a bit part player.

That's ridiculous. He does track back and does make attempts to challenge for the ball. Unfortunately he gets bullied off it at times due to his lack of physical stature. Also in regards to his passing, pretty much all midfielders play the ball backwards and side-wards for the majority of the game- you can't expect him or any player to play the ball forwards constantly. When he does have the opportunity to play forward incisive balls he clearly does, his switches are also quality and pin point! I would say him and Davis are best passers in the squad so you complaining about his passing is crazy! :mcinnes:

Errrrr, he doesn't actually......whenever there's an opportunity for a decisive 'through ball', he invariably passes it back or sideways.

Palace away, Newcastle away.... Its hard to think of every time he does it because not every time leads to a goal/ something notable.

Lingard called up to the senior squad , England officially a joke!

So much for what we know.

We can't argue with the stats.

(That was meant for the JWP is better than Pogba quote. But the same applies, doh)

Clasie, VVD and Tadic are all better passers than those two. JWP and Davis are both safe in possession (and to give him his due, once or twice a season Davis will play a genuinely phenomenal ball - his outside of the boot cross for Maya against Everton last season was great, along with a lovely scooped pass near the corner flag against someone like West Brom) but neither of them regularly stretch the game with their passing.

One goal for a big club is all is takes to be fair.

had to drive up the motorway earlier and had talksport on in the car.

Lingard has played less than 300 mins of Premier League football in his career.

despite that, roy hodgson has great belief in players from the non top 6 sides and has been 'incredibly brave' in his squad selections over the years

and Gibbs should be the number 1 left beck with shaw injured.

(yep, john cross)

Mason now called up to Cover townsend , Some of you may think im mad but atm I'd much rather Jwp stayed to lead the U21s through their qualification ! Has a player ever declined a call up to stay in the under 21s ? What would you rather do probably sit on the bench and maybe play ten mins for the full team or be the captain of the U21s and lead them ?

Cracking player that Whatmore, watched him recently in the U21 game at St Mary's.

Got a long way to go in the open age game though. Sunderland were all over the place in our game at their place last week anyway, but he struggled to get into the game and do anything, and when he did there were a lot of blind alleys ran down. Has got some decent characteristics which will leave him in good stead though.

Meant to say Staplewood! Yeah I agree with that though he has some pretty gash players around him. IMO he has more about him than Gallagher or McQueen does though.

Because it's a rare occurance maybe?

His average is 1.2 key pass per game Tadic is 2 a game, davis is 1.9 a game.

So overall when compared to others in the team that play a more advanced attacking role than Prowse does he is not doing such a bad job, he has a better pass rate than both Tadic and Davis who both have far more misplaced passes than prowse, they also lose get caught in possesion more than Prowse and both have years more exp than the young JWP so tbh you should expect far more from Tadic and Davis.

The fact he draws attention from top clubs around europe would suggest he is a very good young player and one of the top 10 under 21 midfield players in europe, but i guess the world of football knows bugger all when compared to the managers / coaches and scouts on Sainstweb forum.

Give the lad a break, least he wants to be a Southampton player and does not wish to leave the club.
