Targett & Ward-Prowse named in England U21 Euro squad

I thought England looked better while JWP was on the pitch. Small plus point. Decent Portugal team.

Didn't see all the first half but from what I saw JWP gave the ball away very cheaply on at least 2/3 occasions and the Portuguese found it very easy to play through midfield.

Yeah, he did a couple of times early second half. England looked alright in the first half, but poor 2nd. Not sure how much it was due to JWP coming off.

Did see the game but we cannot expect too much from JWP after the season he had. He's going into the tournament off the back of his worst ever season in professional football, so let's cut him some slack. Last season was a horror show for him so the U21 tourny couldn't have come at a worse time.

Lets get him back in for pre-season and hope he can find some form for next season or possibly the one after that. Needs time.

Given his injury, it probably was his worst season ever at least from JWP's personal perspective, but he did not play horribly when he was healthy.

I agree, Tom Carroll wasn't in the game, thought it was a strange decision leaving him on whilst taking off JWP.

Our midfield in the second half seemed non-existant.

Their midfield controlled the game and was the source of Portugal’s strength with William Carvalho, who was hugely impressive, shutting down Tom Carroll while JWP was unable to have the same effect on Bernardo Silva at the other end of Portugal’s midfield diamond. Portugal should do well in the tournament.

Did he actually have any of those ?

I still think he needs to be loaned out to "man up" a bit.

Why would loaning him out "man him up"? He is already getting huge amount of gametime for someone his age in the Premier League, few get more. If we loaned him out we'd be short of central midfielders.

Am I going mad or did JWP not have a decent season for us? I think he's developing nicely' date=' he just needs more of an identity as a player.[/quote']

I don't think he had a 'decent' season. However, he got game time but really needs to have more of an impact this coming season and establish himself in a position. I wouldn't say he had a horror show though LOL that's a little harsh. His season was relatively ineffective......but you can't say anything remotely negative on here without people wetting their bed clothes.

He's a young lad so needs to be given time, but this is a big season coming up for him to show that in the many games we have.

How many 20 year old midfielder's had 6 assists last season in the Premier League? Ward-Prowse did so from 16 starts and 9 sub appearances, with an injury interrupting his season from September to December.

Good point MLG but how many were genuine through ball assists versus just passing the ball to someone and them doing all the work? If he is playing in the central midfield advance position rather than deep lying midfielder then I would expect a player in that role to contribute to our assist and goals tally. I'm not writing JWP off jas I think his dead ball ability is fantastic - he just needs to be more consistent (which will hopefully come with games because he is obviously showing it in training). However I think he lacks pace and physical presence so he needs to let his passing range and undoubted dead ball ability do the talking through consistent performances - this hasnt happened yet hence why there are doubting people (unfairly maybe at this early stage in his career).

If 6 assists and 1 goal in 25 appearances as an attacking midfielder is a horror show, what would you call 2 assists and no goals in 35?

Maybe fractions aren't Koeman's forte since he clearly seems to prefer the latter.

Or maybe your hard-on for all things Steven Davis is getting in the way of dispassionate analysis.

England U21s look like a disjointed rabble...absolutely shocking. Southgate looks completely lost on the touch line.

They've pretty much controlled possession but apart from a few dangerous crosses, have run out of ideas in the final third. Jenkinson and Kane have been relatively decent.

Yes, but we all know what controlling possession means... Not a lot. The tempo is far too slow and create any space, hence the lack of ideas in the final third

Great goal...it's also interesting that we seem to like to put failed club managers as our U21 manager. Platt, Pearce, Southgate, Etc

Think its more to do with appointing young English coaches who have recently been international players. None of the above were really failures, they were all inexperienced and like almost all coaches paid the price for lack of out and out success within a couple of seasons. Not many coaches get the opportunity to develop for longer than that these days. Southgate was not even a qualified coach when he was appointed manager of Middlesbrough and did very well for them in his first season in charge, despite a shaky start. 2nd season they were relegated after a good start and an appalling run, and third season he had them 4th in the Championship before Steve Gibson pulled the trigger, probably rather prematurely. Bit harsh really to call him a failed club manager.

Gary White will probably be next U21 coach.

Sweden 0 England 1....... Sweden didn't deserve to lose, and aside from Lingard's goal (good though it was)....England were barely worth 1 point - let alone 3.

I don't know about that. Sweden were obviously playing for the draw and offered very little in the second half. England huffed and puffed and were far too slow in their build up but were worth the win imho.

Agree. Think there's a potentially talented manager in Southgate, though he's somewhat risk-averse.

You hear criticism that we maybe don't take it seriously enough which is sad. However, you only have to look at the amount of support from Sweden (numbers and vocally) versus English fans to think maybe there is some truth in it

Granty was over there and basically said the English FA told the fans they couldn't get a block of tickets so they were all over the stadium, whilst the Swedes "somehow" managed it, and their group of maybe a couple of hundred, all shirted up behind the goal, were much more visible.

Team tonight v Italy: Butland, Jenkinson, Garbutt, Forster-Caskey, Stones, Gibson, Kane, Redomond, Chalobah, Ings, Lingard.

JWP on the bench again along with Targett

Not sure Southgate knows what he's doing. That's not a criticism of him leaving JWP on the bench but more the fact that he doesn't seem to want to play the same midfield for consecutive games.

England midfield looks pretty useless. But mostly, just seems another disorganised mess of a team. Why can't we produce teams?! FFS some england manager just build an actual team and stick with it.

Unless that Manager is Roy Hodgson, in which case stop picking ****ing Andros ****ing Townsend
