As above really, but this is the full squad -

Goalkeepers

Marcus Bettinelli (Fulham), Jonathan Bond (Watford), Jack Butland (Stoke City)

Defenders

Calum Chambers (Arsenal), Eric Dier (Tottenham Hotspur), Luke Garbutt (Everton), Ben Gibson (Middlesbrough), Carl Jenkinson (Arsenal, on loan at West Ham United), Michael Keane (Burnley), Liam Moore (Leicester City), John Stones (Everton), Matt Targett (Southampton)

Midfielders

Tom Carroll (Tottenham Hotspur, on loan at Swansea City), Nathaniel Chalobah (Chelsea), Will Hughes (Derby County), Jake Forster-Caskey (Brighton & Hove Albion), Jesse Lingard (Manchester United), Ruben Loftus-Cheek (Chelsea), Alex Pritchard (Tottenham Hotspur), Nathan Redmond (Norwich City), James Ward-Prowse (Southampton)

Forwards

Benik Afobe (Wolverhampton Wanderers), Patrick Bamford (Chelsea, on loan at Middlesbrough), Saido Berahino (West Bromwich Albion), Harry Kane (Tottenham Hotspur), Danny Ings (Burnley), Cauley Woodrow (Fulham)

Not a bad squad all being told - but would have liked to see Barkley included, don't see why he couldn't have been.

Luke Shaw wasn't selected because of on-going concerns over his fitness, even though he wanted to go. Oh well, what a season he's had. His place in the squad seemingly taken by our other young academy left back....

Yeah, for that level the front players are incredibly impressive. Should be plenty of goals in that lot.

That midfield is reasonably impressive aswell, considering it could have included sterling, barkley and ox.

Still unsure where the senior cb replacements are going to come from. Stones is ok, dier looks a bit dodgy whenever I see him CB. Im comfortable with Chambers but think he needs to play more.

None of which look to be a replacement for Terry or even cahill

Bloody hell, that's a serious U21 squad, fair play!! Will be really interesting to watch their progress - I can see a core of these players forming a decent England team in the next few years, promising!

Yes but inevitably that team will be poorly managed and have no playing identity whatsoever.

Fair play to Targett - quick rise through the ranks for him. The coaches must rate him.

Can't believe Jenkinson is still U21, he seems to have been around for ages.

It's ok, Saints have superstar partnership Stephens and Turnbull coming through.

And what about Harrison REED? No one at the Academy deserves a place in the England Under21 Squad than Reed. He's streak ahead of Targett in development but obviously he's being kept out by other players they consider superior. :(

Hes in the 19's I think and the idea is to try and to keep the ages groups together as best they can now

I'm surprised Southgate cut 3 strikers. Berahino, Ings and Kane are 3 great strikers got the u21s to have, but I'd have taken one more, Afobe or Bamford. Not sure 3 is enough for any tournament.

If you're only playing with one though, two backup?

Surely Bamford was down to injury? He was nursing an ankle injury and even though he played in the PO Final, he obviously wasn't 100%.

I would have thought so, the bloke looked dead on his feet in the play off final.

That's a strong squad. Have England got a realistic chance of winning the cup?

No, they're always boring and uncreative and usually lose to Germany or Netherlands the first opportunity they get. Kane looked decent last time I watched a couple of years ago, Clyne looked poop. So there you go.

Not being funny, but with the exception of the GK's i'm not far off betting that an 11man team from that squad (under Southgate) would beat a seniors team under Woy....

I guess it is just this forum that doesn't rate Jwp , Bit in the sun (yeh yeh I know) reads "Something will have gone very wrong, Or England will have the best Midfield in the world, If this fella does not win 50 senior caps. Southampton ace is a set piece specialist in the Beckham mould"

Potential is there, but need to see him really kick on. He's just in a real bad patch form-wise atm.

I wonder if one of the things that has held back JWP's development (and, if I'm being charitable blunted the contribution of Davis as well) is our conservative, keep-the-ball-at-all-costs tactical approach. Young players like Grealish tend to get attention by doing extravagant things - 40 yard passes with the outside of the boot etc - which carry a much higher risk of losing possession. I have no idea which of those two (or Barkley etc) will turn out better, but between JWP's temperament and our tactics, it's no surprise that some of these other players catch the eye more, even if their teams are less successful as a unit.

I thought England looked better while JWP was on the pitch. Small plus point. Decent Portugal team.

Agreed. I thought we looked relatively comfortable with him on the pitch. Was neat and tidy, used the ball well and always available for a pass, went close with the free kick. As soon as he went off Portugal took control, Carroll who was the worst player on the pitch IMO stayed on and JWP came off, strange decision and could well have cost England the game.

I agree, Tom Carroll wasn't in the game, thought it was a strange decision leaving him on whilst taking off JWP.

Our midfield in the second half seemed non-existant.
