Man City vs Saints - Build up

Lighthouse

Recommended Posts

Depending on other results, including Swansea's game against City this afternoon, we could finish anywhere from 5th to 8th.

City vs Saints (60 points)

Stoke vs Liverpool (62 points)

Everton vs Spurs (61 points)

Palace vs Swansea (56 points before today's game)

All 1500 kick off on Sunday

We have by far the best goal difference of anyone outside the top 4. IF we could pull off a win here, Liverpool would need to win at Stoke with the GD involved.

Jay Rod on the bench?

I compiled a list of possible final day scenarios:

If Swansea...

WIN tomorrow vs City

...and WIN vs Palace, then we need to beat City to stay ahead of them.

...and DRAW vs Palace then we clinch at least 7th (unless a 23 GD swing.)

...and LOSE vs Palace then we clinch at least 7th.

DRAW City

We clinch at least 7th (unless a 23 GD swing.)

LOSE to City

We clinch at least 7th.

If Tottenham...

WIN vs Everton then they clinch at least 6th.

DRAW Everton then we need to beat City.

LOSE to Everton then we need to at least draw City.

If Liverpool...

WIN vs Stoke they clinch 5th place.

DRAW Stoke then we need to win vs City to catch them.

LOSE to Stoke then we still need to win vs City to pass them.

BEST CASE SENARIO:

Swansea, Tottenham, and Liverpool all lose. We beat City.

SAINTS 63, Liverpool 62, Tottenham 61, Swansea 56.

WORST CASE SENARIO:

Swansea, Tottenham, and Liverpool all win. We lose to City.

Liverpool 65, Tottenham 64, Swansea 62, SAINTS 60.

I reckon we have a good shot...

for 5th place the minimum we need is:

Beat City

Tottenham and Liverpool draw

Swansea doesn't enter into it.

5th SAINTS 63 (on GD)

6th Liverpool 63

7th Tottenham 62

Just win!! COYS

I wasn't paying attention properly, but did I see that those cheating scouse bin dipping shytes are somehow top of The Fair Play League and could sneak into the Europa League even in 8th place?

In which case, hoping Hughsie will have his team "stoked up" and Charlie Adam gets Lovren and a couple of others booked and sent off to scupper that route through the back door.

Yeah, so basically...

Liverpool will finish 5th

Spurs 6th

Saints 7th

Swansea 8th

Only bring back this post to haunt me if you're prepared to put your name down for similar treatment of I'm right!

For all the mathematical possibilities its awfully hard to see how it won't finish precisely like that. Still exciting though.

Be nice if City beat Swansea today and the only way we could go next Sunday is up.

Everton will beat Spurs; Stoke will at least draw with Liverpool, this is their "derby", no love lost there; which leaves us needing to draw to get 6th and win to get 5th. We have a massive incentive now, and we are fired up after the win and the love in yesterday. Believe! We March On!!

I think we could get a point in this game and grab 6th. Depends where Man City are. If City win today and Man U and Arsenal draw, then 2nd place is theirs. It is their last game of the season in front of there crowd though. Really does depend on a lot of things and which City side turn up. We can only hope it is the one that turned up for Hull at home and not QPR!

It is not in our own hands and we are playing a top side on their ground who have already comfortably beaten us at home this season. We are in this position because of some inept performances of late so only have ourselves to blame. It is a long shot but at least we have put in a good performance and sent the fans home happy at our last home game yesterday.

Personally I am not going to enjoy finishing 7th and then waiting on Arsenal beating Villa in the FA Cup final. Yes we all know Arsenal should win especially when you consider Villa's performance yesterday. Football just doesn't always work like that though. As those above have said a lot will depend on which City side actually turn up.COYR.

Not true, if City win and Arsenal get a point Arsenal are within 6 points of City with 2 to play as they've got Sunderland midweek. However if City win Swansea can't catch us, and if United beat Arsenal as well, they can't catch City and nor then can Arsenal. So we want City and United wins today.

Though I'd swap that for Saints, Everton, Palace and Stoke wins next weekend. :)

We are also only in this position because of some rather inept performances from Liverpool and Spurs. Swings and roundabouts etc etc.

Was dreading this after the Leic game but as someone once said 'a week's a long time in football'; I'm massively looking fd to it now, the players will be on a real high and we've hit some form just when we need it. Clearly City will be a 100 times better than Villa were yesterday but you'd have to fancy our front three against anyone if they all click again, and a welcome return to form for Clyne yesterday, and prob JWP's best game for Saints.

My only grizzle is I hope we play Gazza, he deserves it after yesterday and playing in a 'big' game will do wonders for his development; I love KD and he's been a brilliant club captain but there's no room for sentiment (for me) in a game that has a fair bit riding on it.

True but... apart from the Villa game Gazza has not been that great and none of us have had much confidence in him. KD is the more experienced by a mile and will marshal the defence and organise the defence for set pieces better. He has more authority and the players will feel more secure with him behind. So actually I would say for this game, KD would be a perfectly fine.

Either way, it's going to be a hell of a ride on the last weekend, but for once, not about our safety but about European qualification from league position!! We could even finish 5th!!! That is so mad!

Bring. It. On!

My wife is American, but she is REALLY up for the City game!!!....................

Ever since I told her it's the last game of the season. :(

The promise of a High Press has aroused her interest maybe?

Will she be relieved or disappointed when she finds out what it is? ;)

The last time we played City away on the last day of the season.

Coincidentally, our previous game was a 6-1 defeat, shortly before playing Arsenal in the Cup final. Sound familiar.

I was there. They had a crappy concert after, and no fans allowed on the pitch. Compare to our last game at the Dell, which wasn't long before, it was a pretty dull way to say goodbye to the stadium.

I agree, we should be positive. Just scored a hatful and we're unlikely to grind out a 0-0. City'a strength is attach but they are susceptible at the back and centre mid.

Hopefully Morgan can come in for Davis, otherwise unchanged.

As it stands at the moment Arsenal would need to overturn a 12 goal deficit on City's Goal Difference to come 2nd. With them having Sunderland midweek and West Brom at home next weekend it's not impossible, but it's not very likely either, especially as there's no difference in what you get for coming 2nd or 3rd in terms of Champions League qualification.

You haven't factored in our 6 goal win at Citeh :mcinnes:

Yep. Coaching role next season.

Would you give up a years worth of a Premier League players salary?

Who would he coach?

In terms of keeper coaches Saints already have...

David Watson - 1st team

Vince Bartram - Under 21's

Ryan Flood - Under 18's

and others for younger age groups

Good points but he won't play on. Something will get sorted.

Palace winning at Anfield was totally unexpected and now we have this huge incentive to beat City. If Saints reach 63 point, Liverpool and/or Tottenham only stay above us if they win their games at Stoke and Everton. Clearly a strong possibility that one or both of those games will be a home win or a draw. If Tottenham, lose, then even a draw at City would move us up to 6th but getting above Liverpool would be fantastic after Roger's raid on our club last year. Last season petered out very tamely, but this couldn't be more different.

Last season didn't 'peter out very tamely'.

From our last 3 games we beat Everton and Swansea, and then drew to Man United at home.

I think a draw will get us 6th, as I can see Everton turning spurs over.

It's a really interesting end to the season for a change, lots to play for. All of us vying for 5th/6th/7th have very tough away games. Anything could happen. I'm just glad we don't have to worry about what may be behind us now, that should take the pressure off somewhat - we can just go out there and see what happens.
