the saint in winchester Posted 14 May, 2015 Share Posted 14 May, 2015 It's clear he would stay with us if it was his choice to make. But .. it isn't ... Atletico hold the cards, they own him and can sell him to whomever they choose to, or retain him. But it is nice to hear him staying he would like to stay. iansums Posted 14 May, 2015 Share Posted 14 May, 2015 If Atletico decide they want to keep him, they give us £1.8m to buy out that clause. I believe we can buy him for £6M. So if anyone is prepared to offer more than £7.8M and Atletico don't want him then he'll probably go. Personally I think he's worth double that. Atletico hold the cards, they own him and can sell him to whomever they choose to, or retain him. But it is nice to hear him staying he would like to stay. This sums it up really. Only advantage we have is essentially a £2m discount vs all other clubs (if he is sold at all) and therefore slightly stronger bidding position. If we can get him for, say, £13m instead of £15m, I can see us going for it, but if it goes up to somewhere near £18m/£20m, then I can't.
Andy_Porter Posted 14 May, 2015 Share Posted 14 May, 2015 I wonder how other teams manage to move the ball out from the back without these two? Every other team in the league struggle - United are crap at transitions without Carrick, Chelsea are probably the best in the league with Terry and Fabregas, City really struggle to build from the back etc. It's something we're very good at which we will struggle to replicate without those two. redkeith Posted 14 May, 2015 Share Posted 14 May, 2015 Athletico can call him back, but they can't make him sign for anyone else. If he doesn't think he will get a regular game at say Utd City or Chelsea, then I don't think that he would be interested. He would be better off doing a Winston Bogarde, wait till his contract runs out and the pick his own club.

Two things a) it really isn't vital it would be great to keep him he is a talented player but he is only one player (one that has been injured quite a bit this season to) b) the club doesn't have much say in this this he is still an Atletico player they have have the final say. Atletico have already said they want him to return to play for them next season.

Him and his agent will have a reasonable amount of influence on where he ends up. He does not have to go to just any team atletico want to sell to (if they do sell). Just hoping we can reach a deal with the player/agent and atletico. If we pull it off then it's massive!

angelman Posted 14 May, 2015 Share Posted 14 May, 2015 I've always wondered why other clubs seem to be able to keep their players (if they want) and get them to sign extensions, while we can't. Am I mistaken in this? I sort of look at Everton who manage to keep their players (seemingly so), and maybe WHU. I'm not referring to the likes of NUFC, who aren't interested in keeping, but prefer to cash in.

dubai_phil Posted 14 May, 2015 Share Posted 14 May, 2015 Gonna have to be careful when you guys try to learn the High Press over the weekend. Got a strong feeling a lot of you could end up being Gobsmacked if you aren't careful. This whole thing sounds like a very professional roll out of news and hype, typical of an IT Industry product launch. Think the only curve ball I have seen is the signing of James Rodriguez, Colombia, Burnley, whatever, but I get the feeling we're in for a very hyper "buy your ST's & Pre Order your kit now" run of news and releases. Toby & Clyne? Could even already be done deals.

Ohio Saint Posted 15 May, 2015 Share Posted 15 May, 2015 Toby's words have been so positive in our favour that a reversal on our new-found hopes would spark a wave of disappointment and vitriol toward the board......Something is going on here, and I'm expecting to be wildly surprised and delighted. Saint86 Posted 15 May, 2015 Share Posted 15 May, 2015 I am feeling very optimistic about Toby. If he really wants to be here then he will sign for us as Athletico have essentially no choice other than to pay ~£1.8m to spite themselves. As for the standard of player he falls under. For me he has the potential to be the best saints signing I can remember. If we can sort out his injuries I think he is better than Morgan. St Chalet Posted 17 May, 2015 Share Posted 17 May, 2015 Interesting that KBilly (on the Clyne thread) is saying he will go. I'd previously heard the player wants to stay but it all depended on the price, maybe Athletico have now named there's and we have declined. Still, nice that they paid us £1.5m to have him for a season!

S-Clarke Posted 17 May, 2015 Share Posted 17 May, 2015 I may be wrong on this, but going by Football manager - which to be fair, is usually pretty solid on release clause figures/contract values etc......Toby has a 13 million euro hard release clause, so if they do recall him then he can go for 13m anyway - i'd still pay that. I think it's up in the air to be honest. I don't think he'll get the football he wants every week @ Madrid, may be wrong, but I think their current 2 of Miranda and Godin (and Jiminez as well) are outstanding. He'd be 4th choice CB (unless they know they're losing 1 of those 3..?) But if Madrid do then accept to sell him, I think we're in pole. You could say that Madrid do hold all the cards, they do in effect have the power...but player power can also talk, as we found. If he knows he's not going to be getting week in, week out football at Madrid then I can't see him accepting their decision.
