It's still early days, but I must admit it looks a lot more positive this end of season / pre-season than it last. There was way too much uncertainty last year, mainly down to a certain manager, and that wouldn't have helped convince the players. So now we know where we're going, we know who our coaching staff and management will be next year....and we're not going to be in a position where we're chasing our tails. Over the last 2 or 3 days I've become very confident that the next announcement will be Clyne's new deal.

At the moment I think Clyne is a top 6/top 7 player, I don't think he's a Top 4 level player yet.......so he's better off continuing his education here, keeping his regular england place and see what the future holds. There shouldn't be any urgent rush for anyone to leave this summer, we're in a good place.

I think the fact that the club were happy to release an interview with those types of questions in 're clyne is showing2 things.

Firstly that they have made an improved offer, one they feel fair on both sides.

And secondly that they are confident he will accept.

All IMO

There's been some significant movement on the Clyne deal over the last week I reckon, even Peach seemed to believe that we'd reopened discussions (although that may be down to the change of agent, which is odd in it's self, but is even odder that you'd mention that...so they must be confident)

Still have to wait and see though, as I do remember similarish video's of Les last summer prior to our mass sale....but the whole structure does seem a lot more stable now.

Sounds like Les is confident in clyney staying, and sounds as though were talking with Athletico about tying up Toby early too

Does it? I didn't hear that in the interview. Personally if we lose Morgan, Toby and Clyne and keep the rest then I'll be satisfied with that. If we keep any of those three then we will have done brilliantly well as long as we keep all the others.

I re-watched that video just the other day actually and whilst we had a bit of a 'mare, the one thing we can't ever legislate for (and this relates to this summer) is when players throw their dummies out of the pram and demand to leave.

Along with Morgan, Toby is probably the best player in our squad. I would be extremely surprised if he stayed but pleased!

Agree with that. He's been absolutely top class and it won't have gone unnoticed.

And at that time we were also seem as being pretty rudderless without a manager, that would have a big impact I'm sure.

Agree with this. We heard a lot of nice words last summer but it ultimately came to nothing. I'll be praising the club once Clyne signs and not before.

Stop it, everyone. Getting our hopes up is a terrible idea! I've given up on Clyne and Morgan, i'm preparing myself for Wanyama to go and i've accepted that Toby is signing for Man City.

Actually, if you listen back to these interviews now (which I've just done) it's nothing like I imagined, most of what both Ralf and Les said seemed far fetched and fan pandering at the time, but it happened. The talk of pushing for Europe I think riled a few people, but it's actually happened. The fact that they kept saying that we wanted to keep the level, or push on, was lost on a few people...but actually, that's what happened.

So maybe, it wasn't as much waffle as we thought at the time. Having time to look back now is very interesting in terms of seeing where we are now, it does make me a lot more confident in what they do say.

The one comment that really blew a lot of peoples confidence was "we want to keep our good young players" which I believe was only a day or two before Chambers was sold.

Yeah, at the time that lost me as well, but if you look at the situation now....ourselves from the outside couldn't predict how it would go, but maybe the club knew a bit better. £16m for Chambers was terrific in whatever situation, and he doesn't even get in Arsenal's match-day squad these days. I think the club knew he wasn't the finished article and still needed real work, Arsenal gambled and threw the money, we probably fell over at the fee they offered and from what I heard from certain places at the time - can't remember exactly - but Koeman described it as a 'present' from Arsenal. So make of that what you will.

IMO Les would not say what he did about Clyne if he was not very sure about getting him to sign. Throw in the pointed comment about the delay being down to the old (now dumped) agent and it would all sound very foolish if things could still go either way. In Les we trust

I know, looking back it makes more sense but even so - if we'd kept him, loaned him out maybe, we'd have a replacement for Clyne ready this summer. Then again, it looks like Clyne is more likely to stay now!

We clearly wanted to keep Adam. All I'm saying is ill be happy when we manage to get one of these big players to re-sign. Saying they are more likely to sign doesn't actually change much.

People believed what's they wants to believe. Les and Ralph were dammed if they did damned if they didn't. Stay quiet they should be saying something, say something, every word was analysed and regurgitated and they were absolutely slaughtered. Too many People were still believing the Cortese bull**** and the nonsense spouted that without him this club was nothing, we were only where we are because of him. The Cortese fanatics have been shown up, those that defended his weird behaviour made to look stupid. I warned of this as was abused as being a Cortese hater, but those that criticised his behaviour have been price right, you can run a successful premier league club without being a complete c*nt.

We probably did, we probably wanted to keep Dejan as well, but they acted like utter prats for some reason, so they both put the club in a rubbish position. I don't think either had any intention to stay, especially looking at both of their interviews when they first joined.

I would also like to think that the ''success'' the defectors had this season will play somewhat on the mind of the players.

We did initially, then Lallana started being a c*nt and spouting off. He shouted at Les Reed down the phone for an hour that if we didn't let him leave he'd never play for again and on strike. So we sold him for the best price we could get. All true. The only thing Lallana was interested in was himself, all that badge kissing ******** was for show. He couldn't wait to get away.

Couldnt understand why so many here were so annoyed with Chambers going. Was bit of no brainer, he would hardly have got a game this season. Played CB at arsenal, and did wonder if would make a good third CB for us.

However if stayed would have been 2nd choice RB, and 4th/5th CB.

Chance to move to top 4 club.

Good fee.

Player wanted to go.

Yep happy with that bit. Don't think we need to hear about Clyne till he signs though.

Which I guess is the point Bucks Saint was making here...

We will see won't we! Very much hope he signs and Les will rightly get the praise he deserves.

Absolutely. I'd already given up on him going, the cynic in me thinks these comments are here alongside the Rodriguez thing just to sell a few more tickets before deadline but...he's putting his neck out in a big way.

On another note, what does Ralph do nowadays?

You would think that after last summer they would be more cautious so that is a reason for optimism. I expect Ralph is involved in growing the overseas business possibly? I'm glad he is doing his thing without too many interviews.

Ah, probably. Much in the same way Jaidi is an ambassador to North Africa, he probably covers Central and North America.

I expect that's the main reason we got him in as he clearly knows that market and it's obvious that we want to concentrate on America to establish a wider fanbase what with that video from last year. I expect his particular style goes down a bit easier over there and he is well suited to that sort of thing.

Not necessarily. If Les says nothing about Clyne whatsoever and he does go, idiots on here will just make out we made no attempt to keep him at all and off we go into "no ambition" wrist-slashery.

Les is saying enough (and I very comfortable it is all true) to reassure the fans we are trying to keep him. It's more positive than saying nothing.

Apart from keeping all these players, I think we could do with a player who has won a title in a decent league and offers a presence to drive the players on, just the same as we used to do with Lawrie Mac and then with players like Kevin Richardson. Someone who knows about playing to the end of the season and putting it in. I know Toby did it with Atletico Madrid and Ronald knows all about winning titles but a player on the pitch with a big presence and geeing players up could be really useful.

For what's it's worth, a striker and quick creative midfielder would be good additions

I believe Steven Davis is that option but he can't hit the target to save his life.

moving on with players in, if we got Austin, Clasie, (the other Dutch player we are linked with, can't remember his name) then we will push on well.

Still think we are missing a top class midfielder somewhere.

Good interview from Reed. Realistically all we can do is be there as a solid option for Clyne if the bigger club offers don't materialise.

If he stays then great, if not we get a decent fee and look for someone else.

Far better though to know early on rather than last summer where the fiascos all went on too long.

If players like Clyne or Morgan are to leave then get them out and replacements in before pre season starts.

In his excellent article (quoted above) ....Jeremy Wilson makes the point that Chambers was "second-choice " right back and Clyne was clearly better.

Wenger thought he could develop CC further / quicker ..fine!... his decision. But £16 million for this player was surely an offer we couldn't refuse.........:badger:

.....says it all really - doesn't it?.......you have to wonder whose interest these agents are really working for .....:smug:.

Thier own, always. I work through an agency now, but they called yesterday to ask me to consider moving on to the next contract, as they have received their placement fee and now are looking for the next one. It's a 'no' from me. My existing employer deserves some loyalty.
