Eljero Elia - Interesting statistic

What we should be asking ourselves before we spalsh 3 or 4 million or whatever it is is do we have a player in the academy who can do the job just as well (at least). If not we need to ask ourselves why not and then pay the money because Elia is a very ordinary player..

Not really. £3-4m is an absolute bargain for a player good enough to play in a World Cup Final for a team good enough to get to a World Cup Final and with no obvious physical defects since which would reduce his ability to reach those levels again, and if we have an academy player capable of doing that, we haven't seen it yet.

McQueen did well in the U21s game, but he's facing other U21s, not top Prem players. It's a massive difference, which can be seen already by Gallagher's impact in the Prem last season compared to U21s games. Elia has shown his abilities against Prem sides sporadically but is at least worth bringing in permanently IF we intend on gradually improving the squad.

Personally I think Josh Sims could be excellent, but his obvious ability in U21s (up from U18s) again doesn't necessarily translate, and he might need to increase his physical presence to be able to have such an impact in the big league.

If Torres was available for that price. He played, scored and won that world cup. I would hope we stayed WELL clear

You ignored the "with no obvious physical defects since" bit I put in the text quite nicely there. Torres has obviously fallen off the face of the earth compared to his younger self due to injuries.

Though I'd have signed Torres for £4m if his wages were the same as Elia's and not the prohibitive overspend they obviously are. He's still got the possibility of some resale value at that price.

I don't think fair to judge them on this season alone. They come in half way through in a league a they're unfamiliar with, and not had a preseason.

I think preseason makes an enormous difference both both players and manager. I think next season we'll make an enormous step up - Koeman will be savvier about the Premier League, players will connect more. Just hope we don't have to completely rebuild the team.

Elia I'm not so confident on, seems a funny lad, Djuricic I'd like to see us persist with, I really think he's what we need, and nothing like Ramirez in style.

I also said Mane looked amazing when everyone else was sl*gging him off. I just don't feel the need to smugly reference it.

(PS, no need to be such a c*ck, Noodles).

sorry Lou, but you said it and some agreed and it just stayed with me, because frankly, of what we have seen of him, to even suggest that is 'potentially' WC is ridiculous. The bloke is rubbish, no wonder the club havent offered him a contract.

Isgrove must be worth a shout.

Isgrove did not really impress any in his games for Sheffield Wednesday. Subbed in most games, then ended up on the bench. The fans I've chatted to up here wouldn't want him back

So the article on the OS saying that he was back from his successful loan spell with Wednesday was just a throw away Pope is a Catholic line then ?

it might have been successful in that the loan showed that he is someone who is unlikely to make the step up to being a Premier league impact player if he can't make an impact in the Championship! You never know of course unless he gets a run of games for us, but I don't see it at the moment; no assists, no goals and several substitutions is not a strong case for a successful loan spell!

He got MOTM several times for them

Did he?

Man of the match awards for live in the UK Premier League games are awarded by the co-commentators Gary Neville, Niall Quinn and Alan Smith on Sky or Michael Owen on BT.

Who is awarding man of the match for non-televised Sheffield Wednesday games in the Championship? The CEO of the Azerbaijan tourist board?

So you're not allowed to have MOTM's in the NPC then? Bit harsh. :scared:

To be fair, I had a look on their forums and most agreed that he's a very technically able player, who predict he'll go on to make a good career - but there are some comments about him being a bit lightweight. He generally got about 6's and 7's in the end of season player reviews, which given that he was only there for a few weeks isn't too bad. He obviously made an impression.

Where I get confused is when I see that a player who is "trash" actually has 30 odd caps for Holland and played in a World Cup Final. Something doesn't add up. Perhaps the Dutch don't know much about football.

I think fernando torres is trash. his history puts Elia's to shame

Elia could be just simply burnt out, he's been playing for a long time even though he's only 28, started as a pro at 17 I think.

Don't think he's ever done much outside of Dutch football and he's a player who's never scored shedloads of goals. Depends what we're looking for really I suppose.
