Tanqueray is very good and my preferred brand Bombay is too flowery for my liking

In the Philippines Gilbeys is good and at only GBP 1.90 a bottle is also cheap.

there are a lot of Plymouth gins which are also very good.

I'm sure I posted on this thread last night, but it seems to have been lost in the Great Database Mangling of 2015.

Anyway, Berkeley Square, produced by Greenall's (I think - they seem to have been re-branding like crazy) is a beautiful gin. Best drunk with a proper tonic (Fever tree is my preference, though Fentimans do a decent one as well) plus some torn basil leaves in place of the slice of lemon or lime. It's pretty pricey (around £38 for a 70cl bottle) but worth it for a treat now and again. Bloom, from the same maker, is less expensive but still lovely; also easier to get hold of, as you won't find Berkeley Square in too many shops.

Good tonic is very important - if you're prepared to spend decent money on the gin, why ruin it with rubbish like Schweppes?

Hayman's Old Tom is nice enough - not particularly distinctive though. tbh Im not sure that you can really taste much difference with any spirit that is drunk with a mixer as long as you avoid the really bad cheap ones (and Gordons which makes me slightly sick for some reason). I like trying new malts and wines but spending more on specialist gin and vodka seems a bit of a waste to me.

Depends on how much mixer you use to how much spirit I guess. I can certainly tell the difference between different gins, but it's a lot harder to do so if the gin's smothered with tonic (all the more so if it's a crap tonic). Matter of taste when it comes down to it of course.

For an everyday slurp, Waitrose do a nice Heston Blumenthal Earl Grey and Lemon gin. Good enough.

If by 'everday' you mean excutiatingly middle class;)

Apart from the bog standard stuff "Gordons, Bombay" Anyone recommend a good gin

Good for what, can you clarify please? Standard stuff gets some stains out, so works for me
