Redslo Posted 1 May, 2015 Posted 1 May, 2015 From our current perspective, what is the most games Southampton FC might have to play next year (excluding friendlies)? Also, what is the theoretical maximum number of games an English league club might have to play in a season (excluding friendlies)?
Lallana's Left Peg Posted 1 May, 2015 Posted 1 May, 2015 Depends how pedantic you want to get over cup replays etc.
Smirking_Saint Posted 1 May, 2015 Posted 1 May, 2015 (edited) 38 games prem 6 games FA Cup (replays all except semi and final) 6 games League Cup (nb - there could be replays in all rounds except 1st, final and semi so potentially 10 games) European Cup - 3 qualifying rounds 2 legs = 6, league stage = 4 games, then knockout is another 4 I think Off the top of my head So we could play a maximum of 71 games if all goes well/wrong (depending on perspective) Edited 1 May, 2015 by Smirking_Saint
Matthew Le God Posted 1 May, 2015 Posted 1 May, 2015 38 games prem Possible for it to be 39 if a playoff is required to determine league placings if everything else is level.
The Cat Posted 1 May, 2015 Posted 1 May, 2015 A league 2 team could play loads because they have 46 league games plus enter both cups at round 1 and have JPT too. Can't be bothered to add it all up though.

If you take the question to its extreme; a League 1 or League 2 team could at least in theory (but ridiculously unlikely) be in all of the following... - FA Cup (with replays) - League Cup - Champions League or Europa League - World Club Championship - Community Shield - European Super Cup - JPT Plus have a 47th match of their league season to determine league placing. Followed by three more games in the play offs. So 50 league games plus absolutely loads of domestic, European and World cup games. Edited 1 May, 2015 by Matthew Le God
Mr Saints Posted 1 May, 2015 Posted 1 May, 2015 Possible for it to be 39 if a playoff is required to determine league placings if everything else is level. Don't forget replayed games due to floodlight failure MLG.
CB Fry Posted 1 May, 2015 Posted 1 May, 2015 38 games prem 6 games FA Cup 6 games League Cup (nb - there could be replays in all rounds except final and semi so potentially 11 games) European Cup - 3 qualifying rounds 2 legs = 6, league stage = 4 games, then knockout is another 4 I think Off the top of my head There are replays in the FA cup but not in the League Cup right?
Smirking_Saint Posted 1 May, 2015 Posted 1 May, 2015 There are replays in the FA cup but not in the League Cup right? Yeah I wrote it the wrong way around, I think there is a replay in first round of league cup ?
Matthew Le God Posted 1 May, 2015 Posted 1 May, 2015 (edited) Yeah I wrote it the wrong way around, I think there is a replay in first round of league cup ? 1st round of the League Cup is only one game, it goes to extra time and then penalties if its a draw. For example this crazy game... http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/28652337 Edited 1 May, 2015 by Matthew Le God

So, the league cup is replays EXCEPT 1st and semi/final Fa Cup is replays EXCEPT semi/final
simo Posted 1 May, 2015 Posted 1 May, 2015 Play the kids in the cups finish midtable and win the Europa league will do me !
Lallana's Left Peg Posted 1 May, 2015 Posted 1 May, 2015 Not to derail the thread but if you want to see what the potential impact is of two matches a week this is a little worrying when you have a small squad: https://twitter.com/YLMSportScience/status/575412002035789824
Lets B Avenue Posted 1 May, 2015 Posted 1 May, 2015 38 games prem 6 games FA Cup (replays all except semi and final) 6 games League Cup (nb - there could be replays in all rounds except 1st, final and semi so potentially 10 games) European Cup - 3 qualifying rounds 2 legs = 6, league stage = 4 games, then knockout is another 4 I think Off the top of my head So we could play a maximum of 71 games if all goes well/wrong (depending on perspective) 6 games in the league stage of Champions League, plus 7 after. Europa Cup is 6 + 9.
Redslo Posted 1 May, 2015 Author Posted 1 May, 2015 Don't forget replayed games due to floodlight failure MLG. I wouldn't count those as separate games if only because the answer would be infinite then.

The theoretical max for a League 1 or 2 club is much harder. Edited 1 May, 2015 by Redslo
CB Fry Posted 1 May, 2015 Posted 1 May, 2015 Yeah sorry, im at the pub so not thinking properly Ok. So, the league cup is replays EXCEPT 1st and semi/final Fa Cup is replays EXCEPT semi/final Seriously, there are no replays in the League Cup. All the matches go straight to ET and then penalties. Get out of the pub....
Matthew Le God Posted 1 May, 2015 Posted 1 May, 2015 39 Premier with playoff. 10 FA cup with maximum replays 6 League Cup (As I read rules, no replays) 23 Europa (8 qualifying, 6 group, 9 knock out--this assumes we qualify as fair play team and reach finals--four less if we qualify in 7th place or 6th place and Villa win FA cup) So I get 78 for Southampton as next season's max. Saints wouldn't start at the beginning of the qualifying.
Saint IQ Posted 1 May, 2015 Posted 1 May, 2015 We will if we qualify as the fair play team as a he states no?
Smirking_Saint Posted 2 May, 2015 Posted 2 May, 2015 Seriously, there are no replays in the League Cup. All the matches go straight to ET and then penalties. Get out of the pub.... Id rather be wrong and in the pub if Im honest CB
Redslo Posted 2 May, 2015 Author Posted 2 May, 2015 Id rather be wrong and in the pub if Im honest CB And to be fair my original question was probably only interesting enough to answer when in a pub.

Redslo Posted 4 May, 2015 Author Posted 4 May, 2015 ......which would doubtless require a very dependable 24 squad, and a lot of game time for some of the Academy lads........ Who must have been playing very well to win all those cup and Europa games, not to mention finishing tied for a spot that would require a playoff (unless it is 17th).
