It has to be done...

39 years ago today, the whole street crowded into a neighbours house because they had a colour TV. My friend put his lucky rosette on the top if the telly in the 80th minute, 3 minutes later absolute carnage!

I still remember the musical car horns blaring out all evening.

I was 9 years old but my memories are vivid!!

What a wonderful sight it was to see all the bridges over the M3 full of people waving to the coaches returning back from Wembley!!

Amazing scenes by The Guildhall the next day

Even more amazing scenes at The Dell for Mickey Channon's Testimonial, never seen the place rock like that.

What a week, what a time to be a Saints Fan .

Happy Memories indeed.

Still brings a shiver to my spine that day, truly amazing, upper tier heaving with atmosphere like nothing ever since, you had to be there to know what I mean.

The whole Cup run, the build up, the day, the Sunday, the Monday just totally awesome, why I still love the FA Cup.

Me too!!

One of the best weekends in my life

Most of us went into the game with very low expectation of a win.

Just getting to watch Saints at Wembley (when the FA Cup Final really was THE event of the year) was a major event for those of us brought up watching Saints in the old Third Division.

Man Utd were a top side with lots of talented youngsters

Some pundits were forecasting a 6-0 defeat.

So for little old Southampton to come away with a win against all the odds made victory so much sweeter

Myself and a girlfriend went camping in the South of France later in the year and so many people commented on my Saints pennant in the car

In Bordeaux some one wrote 'Sir Michael de Channon is King' on my dusty back window

Will never forget 1976!!!!!

Useless bit of trivia, this was the last final where the Queen presented the cup to the winner, every one since has been another member of the Royal family.

Another one .... 2 years later May Day was finally officially made a Bank Holiday to mark our historic win*

* I may have made up that last bit!!

I recall this story every year on this thread, so might as well say it again....

I was born 2 weeks after the cup final in '76, so my Mum was obviously heavily pregnant (it was also her birthday) at the time and didn't go. However, My Dad did go and got so caught up in the celebrations that he went missing for 3 days afterwards. He has absolutely no recollection of what happened to him or how he got back to Southampton, he has a vague feeling that he was at the guildhall square...but that's it.

He finally returned home in the afternoon of the 4th May...."In a bit of a state" according to Mum.

Legend.

My memories,

A yellow and blue top hat made by my bro at Fords

Channon walks on water banner sponsored by carrefour

bell bottom trousers with dozens of scarfs tied around wrists

who remembers the Cup Final "it's a Knock Out" filmed at the sports center?

I was 13 but can rember every second of the weeks leading up to it and the magical weekend it's self.

Even if we won the champions league now I don't think it would be so special.

I was on a family holiday in France. Remember my Dad being gutted it was booked. Had only just arrived in Le Harve when the game was underway, Dad managed to find some guys from Soton sitting in their car on the dockside, listening to the match on the radio. We stood there with their radio cranked up and window down, all thoughts of the holiday, or getting off the dock, forgotten.

Cue mental celebrations when we scored, and again when we won, with a single car horn hooting and lots of bemused locals staring at the small group of mad English folks. Brilliant.

An old pal of mine, Duncan Campbell, who used to be bass player with the Mojos, lived (and still does I think) in Tenerife at the time.

He told me that he followed the game on the World Service and celebrated wildly at the final whistle, and for some time after, which caused a lot of head shaking by the locals in Puerto de la Cruz!!

I love my memory of the reception at the city centre. The guys were flashing the cup on the balcony, and my girlfriend was sitting on my shoulders............My lads had won the FA cup, and I had a warm p#ssy on the back of my neck........Even on the day I was being born, I only had one of those two great things going on!

She obviously decided it was never going to get any better than that. Smart lady.
