Loan Keeper

Les Reed mentioned that we would be looking to loan a keeper next season to fill in while Forster is out. Who would you have in mind? Would you look to loan from a fellow PL club or look abroad? Can't say I know much about the keepers playing in the foreign leagues, much less one who is second choice and available for loan. Personally I would not mind Szczesney as he seems to have fallen out of favor after his disciplinary problems. Yes, he was poor against us, but he has looked good in previous seasons, plus we can't really expect much from a loan keeper. Also, he represents a more realistic option as opposed to, say, Cech from Chelsea. What do you think?

Heres a list of keepers in the PL for reference: https://fantasyfootball.telegraph.co.uk/premierleague/players/goalkeepers

He can be a very good goalkeeper, if he's motivated. If not, he's lazy and average. He's not a natural hard worker.

Sounds a lot like Boruc.

Cech please. If Chelsea sign a new second choice in the summer which apparently they will, he'll be relegated to third choice. Plus Koeman and Mourinho are friends. You never know.

If Cech becomes avaliable there will be plenty of clubs ahead of the queue before us, notably Arsenal who could - at long last - have a decent GK.

Mourinho has said that Cech is a 'special exception' in terms of being sold to rivals in the Premier League, which is a surprise. That said, if he had his way, I think he'd rather lend him to us for a year than sell to a rival.

It's a difficult one - we have Davis already as cover so there's not much point bringing in an old keeper unless they're obviously better than him (eg Cech, and we probably can't afford him), and Forster is already a young keeper with the other options also young keepers so I don't really see the point in bringing another inexperienced keeper in either. Plus we're unlikely to be able to attract a decent, experienced loanee keeper who is good enough to challenge Forster who we wouldn't just be better off getting in permanently.

So not really sure what the best thing to do is.

Any news on Forsters injury? Did I see something mentioned about a return in january?

I still can't believe we are not aiming for the best keeper we can get. It is a massive risk to take on a "promising" keeper, or even an experienced but past-it keeper for half a season.

It's bad luck for Fraser, but if he is good enough and motivated enough, he will win his place back when he is fit.

I completely agree, we should be going out to get a proper no1 then they can scrap it out for the No1 shirt when Forster is back fit.

We need a top class keeper - even for a loan season. The best we can get with a view to Europa League AND maintaining our top four challenge.

Some have suggested Forster may be back after New Year (?),that's only guesswork. Look how long it's taken JayRod to return when everyone said - back by Christmas.

If the worst happens FF might be out for most of next season,:scared: in which case we need someone really dependable.

I've always maintained good keepers should be 30+....... and Peter Cech fits the bill in many ways.

KD has my respect for his long club service, but I don't see him as first-line keeper for another year.

Maybe one day, but really isn't true now.

I'd argue that none of the 3 best keepers in the league are over 30 right now. De Gea (24), Courtois (22) & Lloris (28). There's also Hart (28), Neuer (29), and plenty other good keepers that are under 30 that would be extremely capable of doing a job.

Maybe if QPR go down and they need to get wages down we could get one of Green or Mccarthy in on loan.

I think it may end up being a foreign import on loan.

I've said all along we should go for green if QPR get relegated but we should aim for a permanent signing not a loan, him and Forster fighting to be first choice would leave me feeling much better than the current setup and Green has shown previously he is happy to battle it out and not sulk.

So far, all suggestions seem to be domestic. I'm actually hoping the 'black box' pulls some unknown (or relatively lesser known) keeper from a foreign league. After all, it's a position where you don't really have to get used to the pace and physicality of the game.

Don't we need two keepers? I can't see Davis playing on next season.

Agree with the comments about Heaton. Him permanently and another on loan would work.

I certainly think we do. Forster isn't the only Saints keeper to be injured this season.

U18 keeper Harry Isted was injured and replaced in a game in January (fortunately only out for 2 weeks)......

.........but Cody Cropper took a kick in the head in a game (also in January), and hasn't played a competitive match since, and whilst neither of them is likely to be called upon to play / sub. it does show that - even keepers - are not totally injury free. Not to mention the "terror" of the red card challenge that can get them sent off.

It's wrong to think that keepers never / seldom get injured.....Newcastle had to play their third-choice keeper for several games in the Spring.

If we are to maintain our " top end " Prem. status AND play Euro matches, we can't take any Tom, Richard, or Harry - even if it isn't for the whole season.

I know a season ticket holder at Reading and she said to me yesterday that we're after Federici. Apparently other fans have heard the same thing. Who knows, could be nothing or it might well be true - any signing would almost definitely go back on the bench when Forster returns and Federici is good enough to fill in, in my opinion (despite his howler the other day!).

Heaton, Schwarzer, Green, Stekelenburg, Cech, Freidel, Jaaskeleinen.....

Well the last one of those has been p155 poor for nearly 3 years, he couldn't even get back into Bolton's team before they went down and was soon replaced in goal at West Ham too.

Yeah Green is ****. They were just realistic alternatives.

I want us to sign someone who is comfortable bring no 1 though. Newton would be ideal, but a tough one when they know they'll probably be replaced once Forster is back. Tough position to fill is 2nd keeper.

Schmeichal could be a shout?

Assuming that Burnley go down then I reckon that we could get Heaton for a good price and he would be (not only a short term replacement ) but good, healthy competition for Forster !

Best bet IMO !

Heard this earlier

Swindon Town Keeper Wes Foderingham on loan (if Swindon fail in play offs)Saints Gazzanigga going the other way to get more league experience.

Wouldn't be surprised by this as Stevens and Turnbull have been on loan up here this season

Tbh that could work, especially if we loan Stevens and Turnball back to Swindon, the back 3 learning each others games and playing together. I'm a fan.

...Premier League team loaning a League One goalkeeper to be their first choice for half a season? There's something not quite right in that. I highly, highly doubt it.

He would have been on my list....then he had that howler at Wembley which puts me off :scared:

McCarthy from QPR from QPR would be my guess..........Rob Green no way..... Kelvin is way better than him............or maybe Gazzaniga will step up to the plate :)

You put it with a smileyso maybe you are joking ...but he looked sound in the U21 final. Admittedly that's not PL standard play but he is looking good. I certainly wouldn't be swapping him with a Swindon keeper!

I don't mean to be go all european and foreign on you but we were once linked with mattia perrin:

http://www.transfermarkt.ch/mattia-perin/profil/spieler/110923

Apparently he's meant to be a very good up and coming keeper. I wonder if there's been any development since then on him coming to us.

Trouble is we don't want him to become another gazza which he could easily become

HOW could that work? We are making a League 1 keeper our first choice next season? :uhoh: No thanks. We need a top quality keeper even if we have to sell him in 12 months time.

The bit about Foderingham didn't really click tbh. No to that but yes to the rest haha
