It's not just that. England fans and managers have been suspicious of skill and players who keep possession yes, they've preferred effort and running all over the pitch leaving huge gaps to be exploited (hello stevie G). But even with the more skilful players these days, England media, managers, fans etc get bored, always a flavour of the month, be it Walcott, Chamberlain, Barkley, Sterling, Lallana. Really annoys me, overhype them, put them in too early then ignore them and ***** about a lack of talent in the English game while our youth teams win international competitions.

Even with someone like Carrick, who is a million miles from MLT's ability, his sense of value was only appreciated when it was too late. A CM who maintained his position and kept the ball. Nope, out of position Gerrard is better as he runs about more. Like Liverpool this season, England's biggest problem for years has just been an ever changing team, no time to develop any spirit or familiarity. And it'll be the same again next time. We'll have another 5 or 6 players come in for a while, someone just before the finals, we'll start the first tournament game with an 11 that's barely played together, or never played together, again.

I'm certain that Hoddle in particular hated the idea that Le Tissier was more skilful that he was, and that's one major reason why he didn't take MLT to the World Cup.
