Batman Posted 20 April, 2015 Share Posted 20 April, 2015 (edited) Looking at the 1st team, who (in your opinion) have been hits and who could/need to do better Kelvin - Meh, saw his usual self at Stoke. Needs to retire at the end of the season Forster - Hit. Few mistakes, could come off his line more but at times, a real brick wall Clyne - Hit. Good season even if starting to tail off and leaving Bertrand - Brilliant. Best english LB in the league at the mo Fonte - Brilliant season and rightly deserved to have the armband and now an international Toby - Brilliant again. Although, seems to miss a few games with injuries. Probably will not be here next term Yoshida - Good season. Got better this year Gardos - Miss. Big fee really, hardly features and looks a little wobbly to me Targett - Good debut season Morgan - Hit. Brilliant, Brilliant player. Clearly leaving but we got a good season out of him after he downed tools so to speak Vic - Hit. Another very good season. Going to be a beast of a player JWP - Good season. Form up and down but he is still quite young. Needs to score a few more goals Davis - OK season. Neat and tidy but not much more. Very few assists and no goals what so ever. That side is not good enough Tadic - HMMmmm. Great start to the season but has tailed off dramatically and barely starts. For fee paid. Have to say needs to be better Reed - very good full debut season. Looks like a good little player Elia - Miss. Looks awful really. Bar that game in newcastle. No real reason to sign him unless they are basically giving him away Djuricic - Miss...why have we signed him? Long - Have to say, Miss. The goals return has been woeful but that is what he does. Miss on the basis of the fee we spent on him. Miles over the price he really is worth. I like him though. Needs to be given a run of games up top Mane - Hit. Like him a lot now. Looks lost out wide and was crap when asked to play there. Looks so dangerous through the middle Pelle - Miss for me. Purple patch at the start of the season, largely crap for nearly 6 months. Does not move, rarely holds the ball up, seems to want to play gerrard style hollywood balls and crap in front of goal. Decent season at the very best Coaching staff - Massive hit. disconnect Posted 20 April, 2015 Share Posted 20 April, 2015 Djuricic never gets much of a game, but has looked like he has potential to be a dangerous player on the few glimpses I've seen. Not sure what's happened to Elia.
S-Clarke Posted 20 April, 2015 Share Posted 20 April, 2015 Kelvin - Great servant, but not good enough for the PL. Forster - Hit - Terrific GK. The injury is not just a huge blow for us, but also for his career. Doubt we'll see him until the back end of 2016. Clyne - Hit. Will be a huge miss when he goes, love the way he wins the ball back, keeps it in play and surges down field with it. Toby - Hit - Terrific centre back, but a little injury prone. Would be number 1 for me to sign in the summer though. Fonte - Hit - massive season for Fonte. Establishing himself as an international and a proper PL centre back. He is a true captain. Bertrand - Hit - The biggest compliment you can make is that we haven't really missed Shaw. Had a great season Maya - Hit - Looks a hell of a lot better this year. Distribution is better, composure is better. Garods - Miss - Looks like a bit of an odd £6m signing this one. Not sure what his future is here. I think he has talent, but he's gone backwards since he's been here. Looks clumsy and prone to rash mistakes. Targett - Solid season, not really a hit or a miss. Hasn't played much, but hasn't let himself down when he has. Not at the level of Shaw or Bale, but a decent player all the same Morgan - Hit - terrific player, enjoy watching him these last few games as I don't think we'll have someone quite as good as him for a while. How we replace him is one of the biggest calls of the summer, very tricky. Wanyama - Hit - He has had a great season, better distribution of the ball combined with his usual, trademark powerful performances. Should still be here for at least another year before the big clubs start sniffing. JWP - Like Targett, not really a hit or a miss. Just a steady season, but you want to see more from him now...he needs to stamp his mark down on a game and in the team, that's the next stage of his development. Technically, he has the lot. Davis - Again, not a hit or a miss. I'm a big fan of Davis but I don't think this year has been one of his finest. His lack of goals from midfield is alarming and when he plays in the advanced position, he needs to start popping up with some goals. Recent weeks have seen him drop well below par. Tadic - I'd have to give him a Hit. I think he came in with a decent reputation and hit the ground running. He was powerful, direct, competitive and full of ability. That has tailed off now, quite worryingly it has to be said, but he has still had a pretty big impact on our season. Reed - Hit - In the games he's played, he's been terrific. Not the most technical, but a proper all action, combative midfielder. Will probably play a lot next year. Elia - Miss - Huge disappointment for me. I just hope we dodge the signing of him. Bar the 2 goals against Newcastle he has offered nothing, looks like a career on the slide Dujuric - Miss - Reminds me of Iago Falque when we brought him in. Similar impact. I.e nothing. Long - Miss - He's not really done it for me. Runs a lot but, to me, is a typical Stoke or WBA centre forward. Hasn't really got much ability, but puts in a shift. Although he wasn't just bought for goal scoring, his return has been very poor. Mane - Hit - Love Mane, top player. Our best attacker in my opinion and probably our best signing of the summer. I love is versatility in that he can play right, left, in behind or even as a striker. Always a threat, always capable of doing something brilliant whilst at the same time something truly bizarre. He's our main goal threat to be honest. Pelle - Miss. Not jumping on the bandwagon, but after a ok start he has tailed off dramatically. I mean even at the start he had some stinkers and missed some sitters. I personally think he's ok, but he does hinder us when he's not in (which seems to be most weeks at the moment). 9 goals in 33 PL games is on the poor side to be honest, I did expect a bit more. Koeman - Hit. Huge season, ambitious, honest and straight-talking. Love his approach and the players seem to have taken to it very well.

austsaint Posted 20 April, 2015 Share Posted 20 April, 2015 Really good summary S-Clarke. I especially like your comments about Mane; at times he has looked like an elite Prem player. Likewise, your comments on Bertrand, Clyne, Maya, Fonte, Toby, Vic and the sure to be missed Morgan are all spot on. Of the misses, maybe Tadic needs to be included with Pelle despite their bright starts to the season. Shane Long, despite his work rate, has to be a miss, his lack of touch and control is a glaring weakness at this level. Just a small quibble with your comments about JWP - I don't think you can say he has the lot technically when, at this stage of his career he doesn't have a left foot to talk about; when/if he improves that aspect of his game your assessment might stand up. Colinjb Posted 20 April, 2015 Share Posted 20 April, 2015 Davis - Par Forster - Par Clyne - Hit Bertrand - Hit Fonte - Hit Alderweireld - Hit Yoshida - Hit, Really come on nicely. Gardos - Par Targett - Hit, a promising start for him. Schneiderlin - Hit Wanyama - Hit JWP - Par Davis - Par Tadic - Hit, been inconsistent over the winter but a key part of our early season form and our most talented player with the ball. Elia - Miss Reed - Hit, Impressed in the opportunities he has been given. Djuricic - Miss Long - Par, The new Brett Ormerod. Mane - Hit Pelle - Hit, He needs to up his work rate now but the double/treble marking he is subject to shows how big a threat he is, needs better support. Koeman - Hit, Although his tinkering in recent games has not addressed some of our main areas requiring improvement.

Lighthouse Posted 20 April, 2015 Share Posted 20 April, 2015 Davis - Par Forster - Par Clyne - Par Bertrand - Hit Fonte - Hit Alderweireld - Hit Yoshida - Hit Gardos - Par Targett - Hit Schneiderlin - Hit Wanyama - Hit JWP - Par Davis - Par Tadic - Par Elia - Miss Reed - Par Djuricic - Miss Long - Par Mane - Hit Pelle - Hit Koeman - Hit I'd pretty much agree with that, except for Targett, Long, Pelle and Mane. Targett I'd say par, he looked decent when he played but hasn't really moved any mountains. Mane has loooked threatening in patches but has also had some poor games, likewise Pelle. I would say par for both. Long, however you try and dress it up, has scored 3 goals against relegation fodder. It's a miss for me.
Trumush Posted 20 April, 2015 Share Posted 20 April, 2015 I am hoping that our first season foreign acquisitions will have benefited from the experience and come back better next season. We were spoiled I think by the ease they seemed to adapt to the EPL and were in the main flattering to deceive.
the saint in winchester Posted 20 April, 2015 Share Posted 20 April, 2015 Just seen this on skysports site - their judgement on the Liverpool signings ..... http://www1.skysports.com/football/news/11669/9815004/balotelli-lallana-can-liverpools-summer-signings-rated-by-tony-gale-on-the-morning-view It won't surprise you to learn that Lambert, Lallana, Lovren were all voted a hit/miss - can you guess? St Marco Posted 20 April, 2015 Share Posted 20 April, 2015 Davis - Miss = Can't really blame him as not played much but when he has to come in don't think we can rely on him. Replace in summer. Forster - Hit = Think he has done well overall. Has not had to do too much and has made a few mistakes but will learn and improve. Clyne - Par = Started off great but since Christmas has not really been himself. Maybe the contract/future stuff is affecting him. Bertrand - Hit = Been quality and very consistent. Great buy. Fonte - Hit = Probably our best player this season. Solid player and has improved a lot since the start of the season. Alderweireld - Hit = Another consistent player, great first season. Hope we can keep him. Yoshida - Par - Has done alright when required. But don't think he is a starter. Will need someone in summer. Gardos - Miss = Not really done anything, seems very injury prone. Replace in summer. Targett - Hit = One of the youngsters who has a big future in my opinion. Will improve a lot. Schneiderlin - Hit = Great season for us. Wanyama - Hit = Same as above. JWP - Miss = On the contrary to what someone wrote above. He doesn't have it all....No speed, no trickery, no strength, can't shoot, can't tackle. And I don't believe he is a set piece specialist as some claim. Will need to improve a lot next season to justify being here. If his position is to be the advanced CM position then he will have to start chipping in with goals. Davis - Miss = He has not done bad at all but the recent performances have been pretty poor. I think time has caught up with him. Replace in summer. Tadic - Hit = Our top assister and has contributed with important goals. However he seems to have no consistency. One minute he can be brilliant and the next terrible. But for a first season I think 7 assists and 5 goals is a good return. Elia - Miss = Not sure why he is here tbh. Reed - hit = Very solid defensive midfielder when brought in. Has a bright future ahead of him. Be nice to see him get more game time. Djuricic - Miss = Same as Elia Long - Miss = Was never going to justify the price tag. Always gives 100% effort and chases everything even when it seems lost. But technically not very good. Can't take people on and shooting woeful. Replace in summer. Mane - Hit = Our best attacking player without a shadow of a doubt. Might be worth playing him as a forward. Pelle - Par - This is the hardest one to judge imo. Pelle is a quality player. The first half to the season he was amazing. Since Christmas he just doesn't look right. The effort and ability seem to have gone. Needs to regain his composure in front of goal. Koeman - Hit = Not sure how anyone could say he has not been a hit. Everything about him has been great. His interviews, his honesty. It is very refreshing. My only concern is a lack of a plan B when things are not going well. Continuing to play people out of form regardless of other options is a bit Burley esque. But I have no doubt once we move a few players on he will get the right replacements in. SaintLiam Posted 20 April, 2015 Share Posted 20 April, 2015 Davis - Par - Did very well against Burnley and made a decent save against Hull, reason Stoke got their first goal though Forster - Hit - I rate him highly for a L1 keeper with prem attributes. Realise how good he is when compared to Kelv, with respect to Kelv of course. Clyne - Par - Made the best runs down the right in 2014, now is generally less effective Bertrand - Hit - Makes fantastic runs down the left and has linked up well with Tadic and Mane, as well as putting in lethal crosses. Fonte - Hit - I need not explain this one, arguably the best CB in the prem this year. Alderweireld - Hit - Another one which has been one of the best CBs in the prem, versatile player but been injured a lot. Yoshida - Hit - Stepped up when we lost Toby amazingly, did a fine job in his absence and the way Koeman talks about him shows that he doesn't mind being benched. Gardos - Par - Been shaky in some games but was very good against United, I just wonder if it was worth purchasing him. Targett - Hit - Been a good replacement for Bertrand in a position which doesn't have players flocking to play in it. Schneiderlin - Hit - Usually the best player on the pitch no matter the opposition, he'll be sorely missed Wanyama - Hit - Such a great physical presence to have when facing weak midfields...his shooting is sometimes abysmal though JWP - Par - Needs to settle to one position and role a bit, he's all over the place sometimes. Davis - Par - Overall been decent in the team, been having a nightmare in these past few games. Tadic - Par - Such a good early season along with Graziano but he's tailed off. Elia - Miss - Our system and formation doesn't really suit dedicated wingers too much, he's got good technical ability but doesn't really fit into the team Reed - Hit - Played very well in all of his appearances for the team, clever little player Djuricic - Par - I'll give him par because he hasn't had much game time with us, he was quite good against Liverpool and Palace though. Long - Par - £12m, but he just runs. His touch is usually heavy which means that even if he is able to exploit a wayward backpass, he doesn't have the composure to convert it. Mane - Hit - The worst player to put on a Saints shirt since Ali Dia has been amazing for us, has scored so many crucial goals, though he was having a load of stinkers in November/December! Pelle - Par - Even though the goals dried up he was still useful in many matches as a target man, mostly in Newcastle and United away. Though in other games he was simply a liabilty. Koeman - Hit - Honest in his interviews and can have a laugh too. Usually makes the right decisions in games. One I can remember is West Brom where he removed 3-5-2 and Gardos because it wasn't working, in the 20th minute. Some managers have too much dignity to admit their godly tactics aren't working out. mrfahaji Posted 20 April, 2015 Share Posted 20 April, 2015 I think most of the team was a hit for the first half of the season, but second half a few have dropped to a par or even a miss. Mané is probably the exception, in that he looked a bit iffy back in golden months but when the team started to struggle a bit, he really came into his own. Surprised to see people giving Tadic a hit and Pelle a miss, if it's just about how well they have performed, as I can't recall too many games where Tadic was good while Pelle was terrible. For me, the difference between them is that when Tadic was on good form, he showed attributes of being a player of real quality, whereas Pelle always felt a bit more of someone on a hot streak. I think Elia and Djuricic were signed in case we needed depth for a cup run or injuries. Remember also that Mane was disappearing for a month when Elia came in. I actually don't think either of them has been given enough of a chance but if we qualify for Europe we ought to be able to do better.
USA SaintsFan Posted 21 April, 2015 Share Posted 21 April, 2015 Super Kelv- Imo very good excluding error for Stoke's first goal. 6/10 Forster- Huge physical presence in goal and has had some outstanding games. A little error prone and needs work on coming off his line. 7.5/10 Clyne- Great season although his form has dipped considerably the last month. 7.5/10 Fonte- Consistently puts in great performances. Great player and captain. 8/10 Alderwerield- Great technically skilled player useful in many positions. Quite injury prone however. 7.5/10 Bertrand- Hardly puts in a bad performance, solid defensively and a major attacking threat. 8/10 Targett- Looked decent in his couple runouts, albeit a few errors defensively. 6/10 Gardos- I thought he has been solid in his few games, although his decision making seems a bit rash. Not really a player we needed for his price tag. 6/10 Yoshida- Like Fonte, puts in great performances consistently. Most improved player of the season and amazing backup center back. 7.5/10 Wanyama- Solid defensively, like an extra center back defensively. Very hard to beat and much better going forward this year. 8/10 Schnedierlin- Very skilled defensively and offensively. Best defensive midfielder in the league imo, bar maybe Matic. 8.5/10 Harry Reed- Big fan of him in his few games. Very determined player who leaves everything on the pitch. Potential heir to Schnedeirlin's throne imo. 7/10 JWP- Very determined, great attitude. Very good signs as a young player, with development can become a top player. 7/10 Steven Davis- Great at some things, not so much at other. Good at moving the ball up the field, needs to work on to work on decisiveness in midfield and final third and shooting. 6.5/10 Tadic- Very creative player with a great sense of visual awareness. Amazing performances early in the season decreased considerably, but still has the ability to provide the spark in our attack, as demonstrated at home to Hull in the second half. 7/10 Mane- Looked questionable early on but been our best attacking threat 2nd half of the season. Great at dribbling, causing problems in the defense, and has great finishing touch. 8.5/10 Pelle- On or off most games. At his best a huge goalscoring threat and crucial in build up play, on an off day frustrating to say the least. 7/10 Long- Hardest working player in the team, causes tremendous problems for apposing teams, but needs a lot of work in his technical skills. 6.5/10 Elia- Looked promising early on but hasn't contributed much since. Still very capable of beating players though. 6/10 Dujicic- Looks reasonably skilled but barely had any playing time. Too early to judge.
