Lighthouse Posted 16 April, 2015 Share Posted 16 April, 2015 Saints 2-3 Villa Having lead 2-0 at half time, Jakobsson went off injured and was replaced with Davenport. Villa sent on Nobby Solano at the same time and those two subs changed the game. The winner was scored by our very on Steven Davis. That was one of those 'I think we're probably going down' games. rallyboy Posted 16 April, 2015 Share Posted 16 April, 2015 For me that was the moment. Their comeback was completely predictable as the game wore on, and it became apparent that we were going down. I was in the Northam and all of the goals happened right in front of me. I recall the winner was a lottery of a shot that went through a forest of legs and deserved to win nothing. Happy days. Saint_Jonny Posted 16 April, 2015 Share Posted 16 April, 2015 Ahhh. Ruined a perfectly good weekend, if I recall. God we were ****e. ****e for years after as well. So good to be a Saint right now!
edprice1984 Posted 16 April, 2015 Share Posted 16 April, 2015 First ever game at St Mary's - 2 nil up at halftime, everything happy days. But as the game went on, we looked worse and worse - seem to remember all the other results going against that day too. The game was delayed due to an accident down at West Quay so we knew all the results way before our game finished. The biggest thing I remember from the game was how unfit we looked in comparison to Villa. The team under Strachan was probably the fittest in the league but we looked knackered after 60 mins and you could see it all unravelling in front of you. When you look at the squad, we should never have gone down - lots of goals in the team and certainly compared to others around us an ok squad. The problem was the disaster of Sturrock/Wigley and the Twitchy all in close succession and Rupert not spending any money in the January transfer window. If I recall it was all loan signings and free's...that and Olivier Bernard - Christ was he S***E!

Plays in some crappy county level team Recently made headlines as well. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-3002573/Former-West-Ham-Tottenham-defender-Calum-Davenport-arrested.html Apologies for Daily Mail link, but to summarise he was arrested for attacking a team mate

Saint_clark Posted 16 April, 2015 Share Posted 16 April, 2015 Middlesbrough was worse for me, think it was Redknapps first game in charge. 2-0 up and looking good and drew 2-2. A win there would have given us so much confidence, but it was a case of same old afterwards. However, if we had won that game and stayed up, we'd have had Redknapp for god knows how long and never got the Liebherrs, so...

Dalek2003 Posted 16 April, 2015 Share Posted 16 April, 2015 Didn't think you were a Hoddle fan? I'm not, but he was a much better choice than Sturrock. However, the vocal minority spooked the board and our rapid decline followed.

Lost our best centre back injured, Claus was getting on, as was Dodd, we sold fitz hall, Oakley was injured. All 3 appointments were bad too though. Dalek2003 Posted 16 April, 2015 Share Posted 16 April, 2015 We did stay up. We finished 12th. Yes, but we were declining rapidly and Sturrock was out of his depth. It was soon evident in the 2004-5 season that the board had made a mistake by caving in to the vocal few. I am making sure that this sorry episode is never forgotten and I will not let the vocal few airbrush from history the part in this sorry saga. suewhistle Posted 16 April, 2015 Share Posted 16 April, 2015 Hardly the few, sweetheart. Besides, the general dislike for Hoddle didn't mean that _we_ chose the alternatives...

People may not have warmed to Hoddle as a person, but most agreed he was the best person to take us through what was fast becoming a difficult time for the club. Hoddle had done well for us in the past, the players wanted him back and they did NOT want Sturrock.
sadoldgit Posted 16 April, 2015 Share Posted 16 April, 2015 Still, it all worked out well in the end so without that stuff we wouldn't have the manager we have now and be where we are now. So happy days!
Kingsland Red Posted 16 April, 2015 Share Posted 16 April, 2015 We dropped so many points from winning positions that season, once Redknapp's legs had gone. Redknapp, Davenport, Bernard, nightmare.

bpsaint Posted 16 April, 2015 Share Posted 16 April, 2015 First time I've seen the highlights of that game since seeing it live, damn that was a painful day. To me personally I knew we were down that day, remember falling back into my seat as the third went in completely blown away by what had just happened. As has been said though I much prefer the way things turned out for us despite the years of pain from 05-09.

For the umpteenth time, Luggy had nothing to do with our relegation (unless you count the two games he was in charge at the beginning of the relegation season, one win and one loss). Relegation was down to Saggy, Lowe and Wigley (in that order). Now if Glenda had been appointed instead of Wigley we may indeed have survived. The9 Posted 24 April, 2015 Share Posted 24 April, 2015 I'd been to the Blackburn game the week before when we rolled over 3-0 and the Boro away game 2 weeks before that when we somehow won 3-1, but I was on a stag do in Amsterdam for this one. The ex was at the match and texting me score updates as it was the only Prem game not on Dutch tv that day, and at 2-0 I knew every subsequent vibration was going to be bad news. Still don't think I've actually watched it. We had SO many chances to get out of it that year. As an aside, when Crouch went to the corner flag to kill time at Stoke last weekend I practically went ballistic.
