OK so I have booked a fairly expensive hotel for my fiancee and I to stay for the night when we get married in summer 2016. I used hotels.com and got a cheaper deal that was non-refundable. I got a bit suspicious afterwards though because I have looked at the hotel's website and it doesn't allow you to book on a Saturday just for one night in the summer. They also have most Saturday's in July of this year unavailable to book as they have weddings of their own at the hotel.

I have some questions:

1) hotels.com says my booking is guaranteed but also that it is non-refundable. Are either of these things true?

2) Can the hotel just cancel my booking nearer the time? If they do this then where do I stand legally? Why can hotels.com offer rooms which are otherwise unavailable? If you can't book them then surely they shouldn't be offering them?

I have emailed the hotel directly to ask but have had no response yet. Any ideas anyone?

Ring them. Personalise it and you're likely to get a better result.

For your marriage with Jeff I'd recommend 5 star as he has expensive tastes.

Yeah may do. Not sure if there is much they can do if they give the whole hotel over to their own wedding though.

I assume the contract is with the hotel and not with Hotels.com anyway.

Just rang and the woman said they can confirm the booking. I'm still not convinced though so I'll get written confirmation via email.

Yeah I don't think this sounds good idea at all, I would back out if at all possible.

Can't comment on the hotel situation tho :D

Thanks for the sage advice Brian. I'll bear it in mind :)

If you are this nervous about the hotel booking, I wonder what state you will be at the wedding.

Jesus christ, stop faffing, it's booked! Hotels/chains make inventory available to book (hotels.com is a part of Expedia, using the same inventory/back-end systems) with strict rules about pricing and availability - it wouldn't have let you book it if it wasn't available. Stop worrying!

The most important decision you made is getting married in the summer. I can't stand the thoughtlessness of people who arrange their wedding on a Saturday during the football season.

Awww that's ecuk's way of proposing to Cat!

I'm up for it. The honeymoon will take place in Rotterdam when we play Feyenoord in that friendly. You're all invited.

I would have thought the booking is made through an API, isn't it?

Yes and no, it's not that simple - there are loads of backend systems, services & third parties involved. Introducing a new feature isn't as straight-forward as you'd expect, unless it was pure UI work.

We had a similar type of thing at Regus, allowing room bookings to be made through other comapnies UI's...
