Saint Charlie Posted 14 April, 2015 Share Posted 14 April, 2015 1. Who was the last Saints outfield player who got in the squad on a semi regular basis and didn't want to leave the club? 2. Why do fans go on and on about how certain players should be selected, get really annoyed when they aren't, happy when they finally are and then seem suprised when they leave the club in the next approaching transfer window which has happened to virtually all our recent England players? 3. Can anyone see a Saints player in future making over 200 apps for the club whilst also having a semi decent England career?
CB Fry Posted 14 April, 2015 Share Posted 14 April, 2015 England International standard players = generally better players than the average = this and their English-ness mean they have high market value = high earning potential for individual players = bigger clubs pay higher wages and provide opportunities to play CL and/or win things = players move on. How many seem surprised that any of our England players have moved to other clubs? I don't think many people were. How many players make 200 appearances for a club? Quite rare. And quite rare to be a Premier League player, make 200 appearances for one club and be English. But the answer to your question, Ryan Bertrand and Fraser Forster. Saint Charlie Posted 14 April, 2015 Author Share Posted 14 April, 2015 Bertrand is 5th choice LB. He might get the odd squad appearance, but little more IMO.

I honestly don't think its a situation where a Saints player gets to find out what wages others are on and then they want to move for bigger wages. I think its the England manager who tells the player I want you playing Champions league football and I will select you more.
norwaysaint Posted 14 April, 2015 Share Posted 14 April, 2015 Taking the first question, I suppose it was Bridge, who was in the England squad, but didn't seem to be actively seeking a move. Of course he eventually got an offer that was impossible to refuse, which isn't the same as looking to move on as soon as you get selected. One who stayed on playing for England and saints despite big club approaches? No idea, but I disagree that it surprises anyone. I think Fraser Forster is the most likely answer for the third part. I really don't get this attitude from Saints fans at the minute, none of our players have left because they were selected by England or because Steven Gerrard had a word or even because the other players told them how much they were on. Lets face it they and there agents will all know exactly what they could get elsewhere! The reason I and I assume others want our players selected by England is because they are damn good and deserve the recognition the trouble is they are damn good and other clubs recognise this Shaw didn't go to Man Utd because he played for England he went because they like us knew he was an outstanding prospect. I could see Bertrand or Forster amassing a lot of appearances while on our books and if we maintain our current form in future season more players will achieve a substantial number of caps and remain with us but it is dependant on us being a top level club and our ability to pay substantial wages. I get the attitude. It's because many are deluded and don't understand the game. We had years through our rise from league one hearing about our unstoppable rise to the premier league, how no player will ever want to leave, how they'll turn down big clubs and higher wages to stay here and play with their mates. Those who disagreed were idiots who had no ambition. Reality is now setting in for some. The reality which some said all along but were told was wrong. The reality That we're a middle sized premier league doing very well and we have a good chance of establishing ourselves as a top half club that with a fair wind can occasionally challenge for a top 4 spot. The relality that The best of our players will go to the biggest clubs. The reality that we then sell them and use the money to find the next one. The reality that We need to make ourselves the most attractive club outside of the biggest clubs to get and keep that next tier down of player, we aren't far off that. If we do this and bring through our own then that's how a club like saints stay a top half club. Some have finally realise The reality that dreams and ambition aren't enough. Beckenham Saint Posted 14 April, 2015 Share Posted 14 April, 2015 James Ward Prowse will pick up a lot of appearances for us and have a good England career. Hodgson has already said he's in his plans and if JWP stays with us until his contract runs out he'll have around 200 PL apps for us. Think Harrison Reed could be another one, England would be stupid to overlook him as he is a huge, huge quality and I think he'll be with us for a while yet. Could be as good as Schneiderlin in a few years IMO.
Andy_Porter Posted 14 April, 2015 Share Posted 14 April, 2015 These players leave for more money and Champions League football, nothing to do with the England setup. Good players want to play at the highest level, can't really blame them.

I would hope some players might think twice about moving for a quick fix, but probably not!

Though he did REALLY want to join Liverpool. 2. a) Because those players probably should be selected b) see a c) because they like seeing players rewarded for success for Saints d) Because they've got success at Saints so why would they risk further success by changing their situation. 3. Not unless FFP goes out the window and we go cash-mental, so no.
The9 Posted 14 April, 2015 Share Posted 14 April, 2015 Some have finally realised the reality that dreams and ambition aren't enough. Unfortunately(?) for us, half of last season's team realised it at the exact same time last year. Around about the time they sussed that the bloke spinning them the yarn wasn't the one actually paying their wages.

If as you say moving was a way for them to keep their England place. Again guess it depends what their individual motivation was. But it's not like any of them have particularly shone since leaving.
