A truly excellent man and cricketer just a shame the present Australian cricket team ( to name just one )

refuse to be like him.

Richie Benaud has been described as an Australian treasure and a cricket icon after his death, aged 84.

The former Australian captain and commentary doyen died overnight in his sleep after battling skin cancer.

"Our country has lost a national treasure," Cricket Australia chairman Wally Edwards said in a statement on Friday.

"After Don Bradman, there has been no Australian player more famous or more influential than Richie Benaud."

An excellent cricketer (though I'm too young to remember his playing days) and a peerless commentator.

They read out some of the entries in his crib list on Radio 4 this morning and they were all spot on. Wish a few other commentators would read them and take note.

RIP Richie.

Not some of the present day 'commentators'

ALL OF THEM

The best thing ever invented for TV football is the 'Mute' button

Some, oops sorry, a long time back football was shown with the option of no commentary only the crowd background alas no chance of that with the dreaded 'Sky' and 'BT'

Quite simply the greatest commentator on any sport I have ever heard in my lifetime.

Like having an old friend in your living room with you when he was commentating.

A true legend.

RIP Richie Benaud

This! Not many "celebrities" had me welling up on news of their death but although he had been off our screens for several years, it was almost like losing an old friend. Let's not forget, he was a great player too!! RIP Richie.

RIP Richie, the greatest ever cricket commentator

A great cricketer and commentator but my personal favourite commentator was John Arrrlott. I loved his mellifluous rich tones and broad Hampshire accent; his voice was made for cricket commentary. Maybe RB was the greatest TV commentator though as I think JA was mostly confined to radio. He died in 1991 so if you are too young to have heard him you missed something special.

When I was growing up. Arlott was the sound of radio commentary but I thik he did do the Sunday John Player League on tv. Test matches and Gillette and B&H cup games on tv were covered by Richie and the great Jim Laker (all on the BBC).
