2nd Year Scholars

It's that time of year when 2nd Year Scholars who haven't yet been offered Professional Terms are either offered a contract or released. Likewise youth players coming to the end of their deals are worried, and U16's learn if they are going to be offered a scholarship or not.

Does anyone have any news on this? Someone said in another thread that only a couple of U16's were offered scholarships for next season and the Academy was looking outside the country for prospects.

Yes the u16's is true - in the last few games they have had a few trialists in. The one's they offered them too are good though.

Its not a new thing though as I know under Poch we had trialists in from all over Europe.

Keep in mind that with the newly home grown player rules, bringing in 15 year olds is critical to creating club trained players for the future to fill the two rosters spots that would be open only to club trained players. Of course, this only matters if Grey Dyke gets his new rules enacted.

I don't think we'll ever be in danger of missing this quota to be honest. More that our profile has increased meaning we have a much larger pool to cast our net in.

I disagree because I think that the bigger clubs will try to grab up our good young players by offering us and them lots of money. Given the financial realities--especially if the new rules are adopted--Markus Liebherr's dream of a Southampton FC where half the players came from the academy is an unrealistic and impractical pipe dream--which is really too bad.

Slattery a good example.

Just captained England to U16 trophy success and best player in our U18s yet nobody is excited about him because we know deep down that he will either join Arsenal before playing in the first team, or shortly afterwards with about 20 apps to his name.

Its very disappointing really, but as long as we re-invest the money wisely we can continue to build. Didn't we have a net transfer spend under Adkins of £3m between him taking over in League 1 to getting us promoted to the prem? All paid for by Ox to Arsenal basically. And last summer we managed to improve the club as a whole whilst turning a sizeable profit all at the expense of Liverpool, United and Arsenal again...

I agree its never going to be a certain business model with respect to results. But the new rules will put an ever greater premium on English talent, a resource that we have the top product in. We will therefore do the best out of the rest when it comes to transfer income. And we need to spend it wisely and retain whats left to continue to grow.

That is why Europe is key for the club. If we finish above spurs and maintain some european football, there really is only 5/6 clubs that can nab our players. Everyone below that will look at saints as a destination, not a departure point.

16s found out a while ago. Only 2 kept on I think. Luckily one of them is my nephew.

Thanks for the information.

is your nephew the central defender - captain?

He's captain most weeks yeah but prefers CM. He does tend to play CB in 16s due to lack of options there though. Been playing full back for 18s recently. I see him as CM long term but he's got to start adding more to his game in an attacking sense. Very composed on the ball and reads the game quite well. Saints reckon he wont grow far beyond 6'2 but hes about 6' already so they might be wrong.

Look through all England's under 16s csptains. Plenty on there who don't go on to make it. We shouldn't be heaping that sort of pressure on the lad just yet. He's far from made it.

Seen him a few times this year and the pick of the bunch. Will make it I think as can read it well and very comfortable with ball.
