I Would Sell Shane Long

I was massively underwhelmed when we signed him and he has done absolutely nothing to change my mind. This isn't a knee jerk reaction to today's game but I thought it was another typical Long performance. Energetic and a nuisance but there are no points for that. He can run around chasing defenders all day but he seldom looks like scoring and 3 goals against relegation fodder this season is a poor return for the best part of £12m.

I know what people will say, he brings something different and wasn't brought in as a goal scorer. To me that's like signing a goalie who lets in a load of daisy cutters and claiming, "he wasn't brought in as a shot stopping type of 'keeper." He isn't creating chances either and we should be looking for someone better.

If one of the promoted clubs offered us £6m in summer I'd take it.

Long is pretty crap. Better without the ball than with it.

But he hasn't really disappointed me because me was 27 when we signed him and had never been more than an average lower half PL player so he has performed to the level he has within him.

Not sure Koeman is convinced by him at all, would have been better to wait a couple of weeks in hindsight and let Koeman get someone in he truely wanted.

Fans like someone who hares around and chases defenders so his complete lack of a first touch and composure often goes unnoticed by the "get stuck in" brigade.

We are good losers aren't we? There were 10 other players on the park today. They all have to share the blame.

Which part of "This isn't a knee jerk reaction to today's game".... ah f**k it

Most of the other players on show today have put in decent performances this season, hence I'd keep them. Not been impressed with Djuricic and Elia personally but since they are loans it's not such a big issue. Long has never been anything other than a bottom half, 6/7 goal a season man throughout his whole career.

What about the Chelsea game then? One of the few players that can get behind a defence. Don't agree with the ant-Long sentiments.

Pelle, well that's a different question......

That's nowhere near enough. I'll agree Chelsea was one of his better games but 'getting behind a defence' every now then just isn't enough.

If you think Shane Long is our problem then I think you are a muppet (no offence bearsy :0)

I actually am happy when he starts because he is consistent in effort and ability each game, he may not score a lot but you know exactly the type of player he is and even for a non scoring forward like him he has scored more goals than Davis+Prowse+Elia+Djuricic combined. He didn't determine the fee it was a classic example of hull not wanting to sell and us wanting him, I think he was a classic moneyball buy based on the volume of free kicks he gets in the final third which we would of hoped to profit from, if we haven't its not his fault but he is our version of what Naismith was today.

I'd expect that kind of attitude from 'Orn but do you really think I'm a c**t because I don't rate a striker who's scored 3 goals this year?

I think you lack perspective and judgement. In the context of our season you are mad.

He's scored 4 goals so far this season and in our last Home game v Burnley where he was our MOM.

Feck me people forget quickly.

I have a problem with our AM not our forwards on rotation, Davis/JWP may keep it neat and tidy etc but they are not scoring goals and haven't for 56 hours and 23mins this season alone.

My judgement is that we have had an excellent season, to which Long has contributed very little. 2 goals against Leicester and 1 against Burnley. 1 League goal in the last 5 months, at home to Burnley. You honestly don't find that disappointing?

I think a better player might have nicked a few goals away at West Brom, Burnley, Spurs, Everton, Villa, Arsenal or Liverpool. Or at home to West Brom.

We've got the best defence in the Premier League. If we end up seventh in spite of that it will be utterly criminal.

We were held to ransom for a replacement for Rodriguez, Long has come in with the pressure of the price tag, never shirked responsibility and given everything. He is the modern Ormerod with the extra pressure of the maddening fee. A better player is difficult to come by, should it have been that easy they would have been signed. Look at the options of Ings, Austin.... not cheap.

Regardless of final finishing position, we have done ourselves proud and have the foundation to push on from next season. Such vitriol against Shane Long simply is not justified. He didn't determine his worth, I would rather support our man then castigate him.

Preach amigo, 2 more points and we have equalled the celebrated squads total from last season which is immense considering we lost 1/3 of our start eleven through injuries and sales.

Also Pastor you've disappointed me, have you gone off Jordan Rhodes ;) or are we better as a team now?

I always wanted Rhodes as a backup striker, but now we're so crap upfront we need new first choice strikers, which he isn't good enough for. when you consider we had Lambert, Rodriguez and Odvaldo upfront last season we've really gone to sh#t with our transfers. We really need Rodriguez to come good again next season but it's a huge ask

And only seven games to make it happen.

Shane Long is not quite good enough to take us to the next level - but then neither are Pelle, Elia or Djuricic I fear. We simply do not have enough goal scorers to be a top club at present - funnily enough we may have two or three in the U21s who have the potential but they have not been getting any games.

He's an overpriced Ormerod. Probably be a fans favourite at around 6m. Useful squad player but we spent far too much on him.

He's better than ormerod .

People banging on about the price don't seem to understand contracts and how the market works . If Clynne had 4 years left on his contract he would cost someone more than he will in the summer , yet he is the SAME player . I've been watching football for over 40 years and I've not seen many players give absolutely everything like he does . Of course this doesn't make him special , but people fawn over wasters like gaston . He's a good honest pro , good squad player and appears to be a decent bloke . I'm glad we signed him and couldn't give a flying **** that he cost £12 mil .

How is he worse than Elia, Mane or Tadic? Certainly better than Pellè. Perhaps you are suggesting we should sell them all and I wouldn't disagree with you on that!

I thought Long played well today. Didn't he create Pelle's first half chance?

I wont argue he is worse than Elia, who is on loan and therefore not much of an issue. Wouldn't keep him based on what I've seen so far.

Tadic put in a lot of good performances earlier in the season, 4 assists in one game against Sunderland and seemed to be making us tick. If he can get his form back he can be an excellent player for us.

Not sure how Mane is worse. He has put in some excellent performances despite being inconsistent. He also has 7 League goals to Long's 3

I think people understand how contracts work perfectly well, thanks.

What people are getting at with regard to Long is why we were so keen buy someone another club had just signed on a long term deal, so much so we had to pay double what they paid six months before. We had to pay that much because his contract was huge, but we didn't have to sign Shane Long at all.

If fees didn't matter then no one would ever describe any players as a "bargain" either now would they. But, guess what, they do.

All that said, we've signed worse for more or similar amounts. And he's pretty lovable our Shane what with all the running and that.

I've been thinking it for a while but seeing all the flak Pelle gets for his lack of form it annoyed me that Long gets off so lightly just because he runs around a lot and puts pressure on defenders.

Pelle has show he can play well at this level, he is just badly lacking in confidence and form. Long has been lacking in form since his Premier League debut. 3 League goals this year, 7 last and 8 the year before and 8 again before that. If Pelle doesn't score again this season he will still have equaled Long's best ever season.

I know strikers aren't all about goals but hold up play? Assists? Chasing is about all I've seen him offer.
