Yeah many thanks - I think we have long established & accepted that fact. Solution....???

so don't say he didn't want to when he CLEARLY did!!

i think leaving it as it is is the best solution tbh...

unlike other entertainment venues SMS and other football grounds contain 2 sets of opposing fans. if the club decided on a 'hand-stamp' scenario then they would have to allow both home and away fans out. it doesn't take a genius to figure out what would happen when those 2 sets of fans (who had been goading each other the entire first half) met ,unsupervised, in the North car park.....

and for those who are just about to jump in with "have stewards in the car park then"......the club DO NOT have the funds or stewarding levels to make it safe...

there is a solution....dont smoke in SMS...simple really

Exactly - square one - showing no tolerance whatsoever to others requirements - a classic 'non-smokers' stance.

You are not banned from smoking just banned from blowing poisonous toxic fumes in peoples faces in enclosed spaces, you have a massive wider area you can smoke in without the need to use the smaller enclosed areas to smoke in.

And this is all the originator wants access too, during games (or at least a half time) - not really too much to ask is it...?

why stop at this..lets be more tolerant of drink drivers..he ones who are "just over" the limit...oh, it is the law that is why..

as for allowing people in the car park during a game/HT...yes, that is not a receipe for trouble at all is it..

I know you will say that people leave the ground and will bump into away fans...but the game is over...many people come out of their little football world and want to go home....

on a personal level..I hate having to queue to use the toilet at sms (especially as it seems ****s like MC enjoy a quick ciggy in there)....I should be allowed to unrinate around my seat...i mean...a degree of tolerance should be afforded to me IMO

No idea what the bold statement is meant to mean.

As for the rest of your argument - yes it holds water to some extent and certain issues would need to be dealt with, that said - smoking facilities are apparently being successfully implemented at Derby, Coventry and other stadiums - therefore I still see no reason why not here.

If there is a cost issue that cannot be met, then perhaps it is not possible, but simply discriminating against people, on the grounds that they are smokers, for me, is not an option.

I've a good solution. All those who smoke and don't mind going without for a whole game can stay where they are. Those that would like a ciggy at HT should all sit in the Chapel End for example. One set of stewards to man the turnstiles at HT; the opposite end from the away fans too to prevent any 'trouble'. Minimum fuss. Maximum solution.

I only really read the first line - nobody is advocating tolerance to drink drivers - total rubbish.

Strangely though drinking is actively encouraged in entertainment venues.

I don't wish to get into some stupid argument with you about toilet seats and the like - I really cannot be bothered.

Nobody is advocating smoking inside SMS - purley looking for sensible smoking arrangements for those who attend.

And is it not too much to ask him to wait for 2-3 hours for a fag considering he has another 300 hours+ before the next home game to smoke himself to death. If he has a problem why doesn't he write to the club rather than moan on here about the ban where most of the supporters agree with this ban.

no-one is being discriminated against......they are more than welcome to exit the ground any time they like.............they just aren't allowed back in again , same as everybody else ......

Perhaps you should read the whole thread before jumping in heavy handed. The guy doesn't want to blow smoke in your (or anybodies for that matter) face. He wants some smoking arrangements at SMS. He doesn't want to break any of your H & S Rules or Regulations, he doesn't want to be (and nor should he be) blamed for your rising insurance premiums. He wants to have a cigarette - no more, no less.

Now I don't smoke, but as others have pointed out on here, other entertainment venues have sourced quite simple yet workable solutions to this problem - therefore I see no reason why SMS cannot follow suit.

Come the day when a working man can't enjoy a quiet smoke then we are in trouble, what next for the Government to govern?

Strange that the Government has made strenuous efforts to provision for non smokers, surely it is discriminatory to therefore not make those same efforts for smokers - no?

I wasn't being heavy handed as you call it, I was attempting to put into some kind of context, the result of the original poster's actions and whether we like it or not, insurance premiums etc are rising because of the blame culture we live in these days.

I mean, people have successfully sued tobacco companies because they felt they weren't given enough warnings about the dangers of smoking and the end result is that everyone has to pay more.

I don't care if he wants to smoke at the ground, and I have sympathy with people who no longer go to pubs etc because they can't smoke. I believe provision should be made for smoking areas in pubs and other places, but the original message read to me like he was moaning about being ejected for smoking in an area where he wasn't allowed to smoke, particularly when he makes reference to goody goodies before a reply was even made.

If the original point was to highlight the fact that there should be some way for people to smoke at the venue at half time then it wasn't as clear as the originator seems to think.

Ahhhh right - so we won't bother with SWF now then. Whenever we have a problem or issue with the club we will resort to pen and paper - and write to the club in person. Just like you do with all of the 'issues' that you have with the club then eh? Or do you air them here, on the Saints Web Forum?

Just for the record as well - I agree with the ban, totally. But I can also appreciate others requirements as well.

Thanks for your input - it was enlightening to say the least - the very least that is.

Rightly or wrongly I'll continue to puff away inside sms anyway.

Many thanks for bringing some perspective to the argument - perhaps his point wasn't well made - but the fact remains, I still think that his request for smoking arrangements should at least be considered.

It would be interesting to see how many publicans would be willing to revert to 'smoking allowed' premises if the law allowed them to.

nice idea, but there is no way in hell that supporters from the Northam will want to sit in the Chapel!! (or anywhere else for that matter!)...like i said, nice idea but it will never work.....:smt009

We fully appreciate the rules - we are trying to work within them. The originator tested the rules and they work - he had a fag and was ejected. He now want to try and find a simple solution to a simple problem which has been solved in other venues.

It's not a case of trying to inconvenience anybody else - it's not a case of trying to split the atom - it's a relatively simple problem.

As for your 'if you can't wait for 2 hours.... don't get on a plane, train etc', yep, I agree, thats a solution - and here we are right back at square 1.

Errr no he doesn't - read post 244.

I have read 244 as above, are you quoting from the club or is this your input? Either way most posters on here agree with the rules as they are, the only one who can change the ruling on half time smoke breaks outside of the ground is SFC and not this website. The originator of this thread took a chance and got caught then vented his frustration on this website which is fair enough because this messageboard is all about discussion, but for him to then have a go at people who agree with the rules is a bit rich. If he has contacted the club then he should await replies from the them before acting irrationally.

I'm glad I read all that, well done, chaps.

The solution is to do the sensible thing and give up smoking - it'll kill you in the end. In the meantime you'll get ill more often, smell like an ashtray, be less physically fit than otherwise, waste ****-loads of cash and have to go out in the cold every few hours during winter.

I hope this helps.

the only people i am losing patience with is those that dont realise the implications of doing nothing

i cant change the rules on my own, i cant hope to change club policy on my own

it is a policy worth trying to change though in my opinion, any policy which deters saints fans turning up is worth trying to change

i had hoped that logic would triumph over biggotry

As i said in a previous post,my wife who smokes went to see the stadium manager and was basically told they cant be bothered to let people smoke.

She wrote to the FA and other clubs to see what their policies were and it seems SFC is in a minority. The FA actually said they were ok for the club to let fans smoke in the ground.

One of our friends caught for smoking by the same stadium manager was told to put it out, which he did. Then a dozen stewards came down and ejected him, despite him being told otherwise. He hasnt been back since,so yet another fan is lost.

My advice is keep a low profile because they will be watching you, like they did my wife and you may find that when you go to the toilet, you will have a line of stewards following you.

Good luck mate.

I am not quoting anything from the club...! I'm agreeing with the rules - so is MC. He has not vented his frustration anywhere - merely raise a valid issue about his matchday experience.

If relating his smoking experience, and posting an honest account of it here, in the hope of finding a workable solution is in your opinion irrational then I wonder how you view the many other threads here. I would imagin that those posters currently trying to organise mass demonstrations and oust certain board members are not only irrational but should be sectioned - surely?

I don't have a problem with people organising mass demonstrations and they won't affect my health, someone smoking in the concourse will. If smokers really wanted to get something done about smoking outside why don't you get a petition going rather than come moaning on here, it will have more effect and I don't personally have a problem with it. However if the club reject whatever proposal you put forward then you still have to obey the law, afterall the law is there to protect the non smokers who don't want to become passive smokers and are happy with the no smoking ban.

Guess the FA official forgot to read up on that link above, this is the no smoking policy on stadiums and we come under that policy just like the majority of clubs, perhaps what the FA actually said is it was ok for the club to let fans smoke outside of the ground. That would then be a club matter and not the FA.
