Micky Posted 31 December, 2008 Share Posted 31 December, 2008 I think that a few here need to dismount thier high steeds....!! The originator is not advocating that smoking be allowed in SMS at all. He admits to the fact that he tried to find an unoccupied area where he had a crafty smoke - he got nicked and was ejected. All he is asking is for 'proper smoking facilities or arrangements' to be afforded to him in or around the ground. The way some of you are reacting is as if he wants to light up, blow smoke all over you and your kids, stub his fag out in your eye and litter the remnants all over the stadium. That is not what he is suggesting - he would like a sensible solution to the problem. Fair enough if the club decide the problem is not worth sourcing a solution to allow for smoking clientel then sobeit. But lets not all mount our lofty steeds and blame the originator for the state of our air and how it's drastically affected our own, and childrens health and wellbeing. All the guy wants is a quiet cigarette ffs.

trousers Posted 31 December, 2008 Share Posted 31 December, 2008 right, for all you hardline, 'dont poison me or my children with your smoke', idiots, just how much poisonous fumes do you think come out the back of a car and then multiply that by 300 000 at least, just in southampton. you are quite happy to take your children to school, usually by car these days and pollute the air far more efficiently than i ever could, but you just dont see the irony. Ah, ye olde 'compare a necessary evil Vs an unnecessary evil' philosophy. I was just thinking it was about time for that old chestnut to be wheeled out (pun intended). EastleighSoulBoy Posted 31 December, 2008 Share Posted 31 December, 2008 Yep. Done that. And the finances suggest we should legalise and tax all narcotics. Junction 9 Posted 31 December, 2008 Share Posted 31 December, 2008 Which is what they used to do at The Dell - they did for the West Stand anyway... A point I was about to raise. You couldn't smoke in the West stand at the Dell because of fire regulations. I used to wander out into the carpark, have a ciggie and wander back in. It didn't seem to cause any problems back then. I don't see how a little roped off area outside the exit would cost anymore to steward, they would just be outside instead of on the concourse. EastleighSoulBoy Posted 31 December, 2008 Share Posted 31 December, 2008 If you saw smoke rising from behind a cubicle door in the toilet at SMS, would it be unreasonable to assume that the occupant is on fire? So that you are at liberty to try and save their life by the liberal application of the contents of a fire extinguisher or hose? They could hardly have a go at you, knowing fully well that you have saved their life!

Window Cleaner Posted 31 December, 2008 Share Posted 31 December, 2008 i'm not complaining about the legislation, i happen to think its a good thing, i'm talking about the club resting on their laurels. they should be trying to do everything possible to get people through the turnstile. Yep but then they'd have to have a part of the stadium which isn't a "public building or space" wouldn't they. Saints have no choice, do what the lab assistants at my place do-go out****ingside. In their case they have to jog down to the the street gate cos it's all a public "space" including the grounds. They get sacked if they get caught inside. kelkel31 Posted 31 December, 2008 Share Posted 31 December, 2008 i havent read the whole thread, so may have missed this point being made somewhere in the middle, but points have been made about it being the law not to smoke in public buildings, and being a smoker i have aboded by this law, doesnt cause me too much of a problem, but one big deference in this case id that with most public buildings, even places where payment is made for entry you have the ability to both leave and re-enter thus being able to smoke out of the way whilst still be able to go about our normal lives. sms in the infinite wisdom will not allow you to re-enter the stadium if you leave, why? we dont need to be penned in and supervised we just want to go outside and return to see a game we have paid to see. do they have extra stewards before the game to supervise entry into the stadium in the first place, i dont think so, so why cant half of them be assigned to check people in and out at half time, its not as if we dont have some sort of ticket to prove we have paid to see the game is it! The reason landlords are complaing like mad that the pub trade is dying is that supermarkets sell very cheap booze & they cannot compete. They barely ever mention the smoking ban - only the price comparison of a pub & supermarket. I used to drink regularly in pubs - but due to the ban - I no longer visit any pubs - only in the summer when I can sit outside. Because of the ban - I now buy cheap crates of ale from the supermarkets & stay at home where I can happily smoke away all I want. It has nothing to do whatsoever with the cost of a pint in a pub that stopped me going - money isn't an issue thankfully. The only thing that stopped me going was the smoking ban. And the same goes for many thousands upon thousands of other people up & down the country too. Instead of give us the CHOICE of "smoking" or "no smoking" pubs - they elected to ban it in all pubs - and now many are paying the price. The whole non-smoking ban was ill-concieved and executed. That's this government all over. We don't like it = we ban it.

1976_Child Posted 31 December, 2008 Share Posted 31 December, 2008 (edited) I hate smoking with a passion but if some deluded madman wants to stick a tube of dried leaves in his mouth, set fire to it and inhale the toxic smoke into his lungs thus seriously damaging his health, tarring up his lungs, dramatically increasing his chances of getting cancer and heart problems then that is his choice - just so long as I don't have to partake in his slow-motion suicide. I doubt there could be found anyone who likes the Labour party less than me in all Christendom but I do take my hat off to the government for banning smoking in public places. Really nice now to be able to go out to the boozer and come back not stinking of cancer. All that said, when a fella pays £24 to support his footie club he should at the very least be given a warning first before he is chucked out the ground for having a fag. There is no doubt that some - not all, but some - of the Orange Jackets at SMS are little neo-nazis. Give some people a uniform and an air of authority and suddenly they start frog-marching people off to Auschwitz.
