Whitey Grandad Posted 31 December, 2008 Posted 31 December, 2008 No it doesn't bother me about whingers breathing in my smoke. In Tenerife some English woman with a face like she'd swallowed a wasp came over moaning at breakfast about my smoke wafting over. I suggested she sit outside if she didn't like it. Would you like it if I sprinkled blue asbestos dust all over you?
Legod Third Coming Posted 31 December, 2008 Posted 31 December, 2008 I wonder (genuinely) if smokers appreciate that nicotine is more addictive than crack cocaine? And while they claim free will and personal choice, they are, in fact, victims of the biggest drug dealers in the world.

trousers Posted 31 December, 2008 Posted 31 December, 2008 As a non smoker, I am now appalled that all pubs smell of stale food and body odour. Fret ye not....I hear on the wire that some geezer has invented a new gizmo that conditions air. I believe they are going to call it 'Air Conditioning'. Genius. It'll even filter out cigarette smoke if they ever repeal the ban....
Whitey Grandad Posted 31 December, 2008 Posted 31 December, 2008 hardly a like for like comparison is it? Just a question of degree.

If it means that fewer people are being butcherd by drunk drivers and fewer people are being killed as "passive" smokers then it is no bad thing. I am fed up with those who think it is perfectly okay to tramble over other people's rights to get all sanctimonious about their own. The pubs I drink in are full of people who either now walk or get cabs. They do not smell of beer or body odour and it is a pleasure to return home and not stink of an ashtray. It is also a peause to go out for a meal now with the kids and not worry about what they are breathing in. If people want to continue to smoke no one is stopping them. Just do it where you damage your own lungs and not mine, my kids or those of the people who chose not to smoke. Not hard is it? And if you think that this is only down to Brown, let's see what the next Tory party do when in power shall we? No one is saying that you can't carry on damaging your own health - just that you can no longer damage other people's (apart from the selfish ones who still think it is okay to smole where it says no smoking).

sadoldgit Posted 31 December, 2008 Posted 31 December, 2008 Of course we do! I wonder whether non-smokers fully appreciate that fact... Perhaps we do. Just as we consider how much strain these drug addicts put on the NHS.
S41NTS Posted 31 December, 2008 Posted 31 December, 2008 There are a few grounds that let people outside at half time for a smoke. I watch London Irish at the Madejski a few times a season and they let you out and back in with your ticket. Its definitely possible to cater for smokers but would involve some investment to research and implement something and we're clearly not in a position to do so. I'm happy to wait a couple of hours for a smoke so I don't really see the problem.
trousers Posted 31 December, 2008 Posted 31 December, 2008 Perhaps we do. Just as we consider how much strain these drug addicts put on the NHS. Cue the usual 'smokers pay tax' retort...

sadoldgit Posted 31 December, 2008 Posted 31 December, 2008 **** me you sound a right boring git. Actually I am far from it Stanley. But if you think that smoking makes you interesting good luck with that. We all have to die of something but I choose to die of something that is not related to what I chose to put in my lungs thanks very much. And more so in realtion to my children. It is funny isn't it. You harbour this deep seated hatred of Rupert Lowe whose only crime seems to be that he is a toff with rosey cheeks who runs your football club in a way you are not ahppy with - but you are quite happy to poison other people's lungs despite the fact that they have chosen they don't want to smoke??? If it helps, I view that attitude with the same contempt as you hold Lowe. If that makes me boring I can live quite happily with that.

Big Bad Bob Posted 31 December, 2008 Posted 31 December, 2008 Do you know what really p's me off :- Before the smoking ban, if I wanted to go outside to get some fresh air I'd freeze to death, even in the summer. Now the pubs have invested in patio heaters and all sorts of paraphanalia to keep the smokers happy. On the upside, now if I go outside I'm warm. Same at SMS, there was nowhere for non-smokers to go to get away from the smokers! Eevn in the bowl the smoke used to come up the exits and waft over my seat. Now that the smokers can't do it anymore they want somewhere built for them to staisfy their cravings!! As a naturist will they build me and my like somewhere where we can run around naked without breaching public decency (and in my case public health) laws!!
rpb Posted 31 December, 2008 Posted 31 December, 2008 Now that the smokers can't do it anymore they want somewhere built for them to staisfy their cravings!! You are making things up to suit your own agenda/prejudices - smokers would like to go outside at half time to have a cigarette. That's all. Is it a problem?
Whitey Grandad Posted 31 December, 2008 Posted 31 December, 2008 You are making things up to suit your own agenda/prejudices - smokers would like to go outside at half time to have a cigarette. That's all. Is it a problem?[/quote] None that I can see.
Big Bad Bob Posted 31 December, 2008 Posted 31 December, 2008 You are making things up to suit your own agenda/prejudices - smokers would like to go outside at half time to have a cigarette. That's all. Is it a problem? Well, without something being built what's to stop the away fans meeting up with the home fans whilst on a fag break? Add in the additional logistics of smokers wanting to go in and out up to 10 mins either side of half time or even during the game how is that going to be controlled? I used to smoke, I know what the addiction is like, luckily I gave up before we moved to SMS. I feel sorry for the poor buggers that used to sit near me at the Dell, having to put up with my smoking
Toomer Posted 31 December, 2008 Posted 31 December, 2008 As a reformed smoker, I kicked the habit Oct 2008 I do not miss the stench on the concourse at half time. The smoking ban did help me give them up long may it continue.
rpb Posted 31 December, 2008 Posted 31 December, 2008 Well, without something being built what's to stop the away fans meeting up with the home fans whilst on a fag break? Add in the additional logistics of smokers wanting to go in and out up to 10 mins either side of half time or even during the game how is that going to be controlled? It didn't seem to be a problem at The Dell - perhaps we were more civilised back then? People leaving early/arriving late either side of half time didn't seem to be a problem when people smoked in the concourse (I am not advocating smoking in the concourse by the way - just pointing out a precedent). Most smokers are not selfish people (like alpine) but would like to partake in our admittedly foul (but legal) habit away from others.
Big Bad Bob Posted 31 December, 2008 Posted 31 December, 2008 It didn't seem to be a problem at The Dell - perhaps we were more civilised back then? Yes, but you weren't exactly allowed out of the gates to smoke were you! I never used to leave my seat unless I needed a wee so don't know People leaving early/arriving late either side of half time didn't seem to be a problem when people smoked in the concourse (I am not advocating smoking in the concourse by the way - just pointing out a precedent). No, I'm saying you'd need extra stewards on the gates to check peoples tickets coming back into the ground. Most smokers are not selfish people (like alpine) but would like to partake in our admittedly foul (but legal) habit away from others. Fairysnuff. Another thing I've thought of it what's to stop (some of the more unscrupulous) taking their mate's ticket stubs and giving them to someone outside the stadium who would then use it to get in to see the rest of the match!! With all the empty seats in the bowl I'm sure theyd'd quite easily find somewhere to sit!!
hamster Posted 31 December, 2008 Posted 31 December, 2008 As NYE and giving p smoking go hand in hand, I would like to take this opportunity to recomend the method that 'helped' me to give up in February. Allen Carr's Easy Way book is brilliant. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Allen-Carrs-Easy-Stop-Smoking/dp/0140277633 Cost less than a pack of 20! It will help you to accept that you really can not 'enjoy' a cigarette. Read the book and you understand why this fact, is in fact a fact. Good luck to anyone using alternative methods, but Iu tried them all, from nicotine products, working out the cost/savings and hypnosis tapes. But you really do need to realise that you are up against a massively powerful drug. As for smoking at SMS, I was the last person to legally smoke there I believe, as my daughters wedding reception was held there on the night the ban came in, and the gestapo said they would turn a blind eye once midnight struck.
Didcot Saint Posted 31 December, 2008 Posted 31 December, 2008 Coventry last season cordoned off an area outside, opened up the doors and let those who wanted to go for a smoke. They even had a tea bar there. Why cant the cretins at SMS do that then everyones happy. I need a smoke at HT especially watching the ****e we have had to endure most of this season.

It's a wee bit different for surface ships of course - especially these days. You want a ciggie - you can pop on the upper deck most of the time - not really an option miles below the Atlantic!
