washsaint Posted 3 April, 2015 Share Posted 3 April, 2015 Just been reading the great interview in the Mail with JWP: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-3025057/James-Ward-Prowse-dream-bend-like-Beckham-barrister-s-son-sets-bar-high-Southampton.html The lad comes across so well and is a credit to his family and the club. He has bags of talent and will be a great player for us. Some of the 'forum experts' on here that have been slating the lad would do well to take note of what people in the game think of JWP. Most seem to rate him so highly and unlike Shaw or Chambers he has not chosen to jump ship at the earliest opportunity. He seems to have been around forever yet is still only 20! Saint Charlie Posted 3 April, 2015 Share Posted 3 April, 2015 Arguably a better talker than player based on what he has done as opposed to the undoubted potential. Massive 18months for him to kick on. Still not a starter in our best XI.

But despite 70 odd games doesn't have a best position, is woeful defensively and doesn't contribute in attack. Good technical player but his ceiling IMO is far lower than the likes of Shaw, Chambers, AOC etc because he has some basic (mostly physical) flaws as a PL midfielder. Also, can you call yourself a free kick specialist having never scored one for your club? If his game grows to match his PR and image then great. washsaint Posted 3 April, 2015 Author Share Posted 3 April, 2015 you really are a ray of sunshine saint charlie aren't you? We're having an incredible season, we have lads like JWP that are growing into really good players and do not appear to have huge egos and yet you're still not happy. Of course the England setup is wrong about JWP and the type of player he will become and folks in the business who say he is a real talent.....you're an amazing judge of a player, far more so than the pros in the game. I pity you, I really do and I hope you have your supply of diapers ready for the summer again.
Matthew Le God Posted 3 April, 2015 Share Posted 3 April, 2015 Still not a starter in our best XI. So what? He is 20 years old and playing for a team that after 30 games is 6th in the Premier League. You'd struggle to name many players of his age that would be first choice in such a team. He has played 67 games for a strong Premier League side, Schneiderlin and Lallana for example when the same age hadn't played a single Premier League game. "doesn't have a best position" - what of you mean by this? And so what? He has one of the best minutes per assist ratios in the Premier League, I'd say that is a good attacking contribution. "woeful defensively" is also extremely harsh. Good technical player but his ceiling IMO is far lower than the likes of Shaw, Chambers, AOC etc because he has some basic (mostly physical) flaws as a PL midfielder. He has actually bulked up quite a lot this season. Also, can you call yourself a free kick specialist having never scored one for your club? Until this season Lambert has been first choice on direct free kicks on goal. Ward-Prowse's delivery from free kicks and corners is superb, it can still be a good set piece even if the end result isn't a goal.

Saint Charlie Posted 3 April, 2015 Share Posted 3 April, 2015 I think he is a better player and offers more to England than the likes of Fabian Delph, Jack Coback and Tom Cleverly who have all been called up by England recently as central midfielders. Ha, ringing endorsement for the lad. Delph is certainly a better central midfielder than JWP right now and is a lot more powerful. Don't get me wrong, he is a tidy player and will surely have a good career. I just get the feeling people (including JWP himself) are expecting him to suddenly turn into a world class central midfielder. When I watch him I see a player who can pick a pass and has lovely technique but who in a men's senior match you can't play as a deep lying playmaker as he doesn't have an ounce of ball winning ability and is far too easy to run beyond. Even Hazard won a 20-80 in JWPs favour that nearly cost us at Chelsea. Is his future in a more advanced position? Not for me unless he suddenly develops either more power, a bit of a trick to beat a man, or shows he could get 5-7 open play goals in a season. The Germany goal was nice and a good start but its not like for us he has loads of chances and takes up great offensive positions. He has probably done more interviews than any other Saints player this season, and probably more in his career than he has made appearances. Hopefully he can develop into the player that he is being hyped to be and that he is hyping himself to be. Beckham comparisons fuel the hype and add pressure. JWP is certainly a confident, self-promoting type, but he doesn't have the game to bring it off. I wonder what Harry Reed thinks about the fuss being made about JWP compared to his low key profile. The irony is Reed has enough qualities to go much further in the game.

I always felt ** Beckham was greatly over-rated. Statistical note; David Beckham didn't score his first international goal until his 20th game for England. He scored his second ......in his 37th England game. In 115 games for England, he managed only 17 goals. Beckham's goals were often more spectacular than they were frequent. ** As far as career / goals......Beckham wasn't in the same class as MLT - who played in the same period in Prem. ..........................................Prem apps only.............Career total Beckham (MU) 1992-2003....265 apps........62 goals........523 apps......97 goals. LuckyNumber7 Posted 4 April, 2015 Share Posted 4 April, 2015 He seems like a nice down to Earth lad with his head screwed on and is obviously determined to make the most of his ability. You can't fault his attitude. But I've seen very little in his 60/70 odd appearances for Saints to suggest he is going to be a 'great' player for us. I appreciate he is still young and has time on his side, but the worrying thing is he doesn't seem to be improving, if anything he is going backwards. I really hope he does push on to the levels predicted for him by the 'experts', but at the moment I just don't see it.

Seems the people who matter can see he's only 20. BTW, for those who like to compare him with Harry Reed, there is no comparison in my view. JWP is currentlyhead and shoulders the better player. They're the same age, and of the two three Saints Managers in the Premier League, the current England U21 Manager ( who has made him Captain when there are players almost 3 years older in the team)and, it seems, the current England Manager all rate him higher. LOL Harry Reed has had to fight for a place with Morgan, Victor and Jack Cork over the last few seasons not many youngsters are going to get a game ahead of those three. Don't think Koeman has ever called JWP outstanding (unlike Reed after the Everton game) plus I'd take anything Hodgson says with a pinch of salt. Currently JWP is an AM that doesn't score goals, rarely gets beyond our CF and is sited as a deadball specialist who hasn't scored a single free kick this season. One of the differences between Roy Hodgson's assessment of JWP and those who have seen each of his 24 appearances for Saints this season is that Roy's hype doesn't measure up with what we have seen him do on the pitch. As for Faz' claim about JWP being head and shoulders over Harry Reed....we will see; Reed has the goods to be a better DM than JWP has as an AM, the only position he has a chance of performing in. Reed's played a handful of games; JWP has nearly 70 appearances. This debate needs to be revisited in a year or two.
