Could Stekelenburg be the next Forsyth?

.whilst everyone is lamenting Fraser Forster's injury and long absence, there has been a big void in names as a possible replacement..until now.

One media comment from ..Holland?...has suggested that Saints are looking to Maarten Stekelenburg (who although contracted to Fulham until 2017) has been wiling away his time on the Monaco bench - in what is proving to be - a most unsatisfactory loan period, in which he has hardly played at all.

The fact that Stekelenburg has previously had club experience with ...Ronald Koeman...may have absolutely nothing to do with it ... but who knows? ....

Don't hold your breath on this one.......but we surely need to good class international keeper, if we are to be without Forsyth for the forseeable future.

remember him well....after our two "ex-Spuds" goalies; Reynolds and Hollowbread (who DAJFU when it mattered) it was a real change to see (and hear) Campbell Forsyth as custodian for Saints in the mid 1960's. He was tough, dominating figure in goal and regarded everything in the penalty area as " his ball ".

Unlike his predecessors, he didn't like the idea of having full backs dawdling around in the penalty area, and on a number of occasions bellowed at them them to get upfield ...in a voice level that could carry to the other end of the pitch. His " fluke " injury, (coming as it did out of the blue - rather like Forster's) occured when his leg became trapped between Denis Hollywood and Liverpool's winger Ian Callaghan, when they collided, going for a loose ball, in a League game at The Dell.

He never discovered the tremendous form (and perhaps also the confidence) that he first showed when he arrived.

At his peak... He would have been in a class with Niemi and Shilton.

Where is Campbell these days - seems to make the first team squad any more?

I met him at Dalmahoy a number of years ago, he was the caddiemaster/starter when I played in a corporate event !

Lovely fella, talked for ages about Saints and had very good memories of his time here !

Well we've coped without him for 47 years so I reckon we'll be OK for a bit longer.

My memory of Forsyth is of Peter Shilton's long, wind-assisted punt on a foul day at The Dell bouncing over his head and into the net, to give Leicester their final goal in a 5-1 win.

Shilton was embarrassed, as most keeper's are when they score against a fellow union member, but Forsyth always blamed the lines, claiming they were painted too hard and too thick and when the ball hit the 18-yard box. it took a freakish bounce.

My first game was also Forsyth's last, the 3-5 home defeat to Chelsea in Jan 1968, so memories of him are minimal. Though I do remember the Shilton goal on TV the previous season. Campbell kept a clean sheet for Scotland in the game against the Auld Enemy a couple of seasons earlier when he was with Kilmarnock, Scotland won 1-0 at Hampden, also played in the Fairs Cup for Killie. Eventually replaced by Eric Martin (though Dave Maclaren was brought in before Martin), who like Fraser never got a Scotland call up while he was with Southampton, because they considered Southampton too far away.

Is it possible regarding the situation with all current (and non-current) possibilities which lead us to the ongoing overall goalkeeping situation which we all know doesn't always end as well as we'd have hoped for but often surprises us all by virtue of non-committal players, agents etc that we all continue moving on through this period which couldn't, and possibly, wouldn't have affected the incoming transfer anyway regardless of complete and utter unknowns getting involved in the process?

Yes, you just did, you just press quote.

He is sh1te. This is why he looked completely lost in the premier league and ended up dropped at Fulham for Stockdale, who is also sh1te.

The manager that dropped him also thought putting cheese on your leg would heal hamstring injuries do I wouldn't read too much into that.

Stekelenburg is a decent goalkeeper but perhaps a bit past his best. Not the most commanding and perhaps a bit quiet but he has great reactions and is good at stopping penalties as well

There is the added problem that Steklenberg is utter ****e.

How are you defining "utter ****e"? Its relative to the level you what him for. Stekelenburg played 191 times for Ajax, 48 times for AS Roma and has 54 Dutch caps (including playing in a World Cup final) so he clearly has a decent pedigree. If we were linked to him in League One or the Championship would you call him "utter ****e"? If we were to sign him in the summer he'd be a stop gap until Forster recovered and then Forster's back-up.

It will be a shame to see Campbell Forsyth hang up his boots after all these years, but Eric Martin should be okay or even young Gerry Gurr perhaps. However, should those two not work out I did notice in the BBC gossip roundup today that some paper thought Tim Krul would be leaving Newcastle this summer. I immediately put two and two together and decided he must be our next keeper (sorry Eric and Gerry) because, well, he is Dutch ... Right?

Is one view, but if Stekelenburg played 191 times for Ajax, 48 times for AS Roma and has 54 Dutch caps (including playing in a World Cup final) then surely someone should point out that if anyone can get the best out of him....
