Top 4 chance now gone? Europa Thoughts?

Potentially two ties.

One 2 legged third round qualifier, which is at the end of July, and if we get through that then another 2 legged play off (Mid-august) to see who gets into the Group stages. The 2 legged play off is contested against the winners from the third round and the teams kicked out of the CL qualifiers.

ffs, we will probably lose out like last time

Who knows, the standard in these qualifiers are pretty poor. Not sure on how the seeding works, but Hull as an example got drawn against Trenčín in the first round, and Lokeren in the play off (they lost to them on away goals). Spurs got through by beating AEL Limassol

Seeding is based on a club coefficient, they seed half the teams in each round based on that coefficient so a seeded team always plays an unseeded team (in every round) - I'm doing a bit of research based on recent scores and to me it looks like we'd be seeded in the 3rd QR and possibly not in the Play Off round.

If we get into the Europa League, our coefficient score will be about 17, similar to Hull's as they also had England's score plus nothing extra for not being in Europe recently - but since last year the number of teams in the various rounds and the proportion of teams falling into the EL from the CL has changed.

So whilst Hull were seeded for both rounds, we could end up unseeded for the playoff round with 15 CL 3rd Q losers (all likely to be recent European qualifiers with decent previous records) of the 44 teams (rather than the 15 of 62 it was last year).

To add a bit more detail - currently no team in the First Qualifying Round has a coefficient more than Saints would have (though West Ham might well have the same score and it could be better if they have a recent European record I've forgotten about):

The 33 Second Qualifying Round winners from above are joined by the 25 teams (including Saints) who go directly into the 3rd Qualifying Round: This is all assuming Villa don't win the Cup of course.

At this stage there can only be the 2 teams from earlier in the competition plus 6 or 7 others with coefficients of more than Saints' score (plus West Ham), and with only 11 teams still to be decided so at most 20-ish seeded teams ahead of Saints. As there are 58 teams in this round, Saints would be seeded to play one of the teams with the lowest 29 coefficient scores.

Should we get through the 3rd Qualifying Round, we'd then go into the Europa League Play-Off Round with the other 28 winners plus the 15 losers of the Champions League 3rd Qualifying Round. 44 teams in all.

Obviously that's more difficult to work out, as no idea who the 15 CL 3rd QR knocked out teams are or which of the other sides will go through and whether they'd be seeds or not in the previous round, but a lot of the teams dropping in are likely to be previous champions and have previous coefficient points from CL, so more likely to outrank Saints.

Last year there were more teams in the pre-Group stages, but working out the approximate numbers... 22/62 teams in that round (about 1/3 had scores of over 17). That's actually better than I thought, and gives a decent chance of Saints being seeded. But we're a long way from knowing whether we'd be seeded or not in that final pre-group qualifying.

Anyway, in the Group Stages there will be 22 winners from EL PlayOff Round, plus 10 losers of CL Play-Off Round, plus these 16:

England Tottenham Hotspur Coeff. 84.078

Spain Sevilla Coeff. TBD

Portugal Braga Coeff. 51.776

Italy Fiorentina Coeff. TBD

Belgium Anderlecht Coeff. 47.440

Turkey Beşiktaş Coeff. 36.520

Russia Lokomotiv Moscow Coeff. 23.099

Germany Augsburg Coeff. 15.883

Netherlands Groningen Coeff. 8.695

Spain Winners of 2014–15 Copa del Rey

England Winners of 2014–15 FA Cup

Germany Winners of 2014–15 DFB-Pokal

Italy Fourth or fifth-placed team of 2014–15 Serie A

France Winners of 2014–15 Coupe de France

Ukraine Winners of 2014–15 Ukrainian Cup or third-placed team of 2014–15 Ukrainian Premier League

Greece Third-placed team of 2014–15 Superleague Greece

All of those teams will be drawn (via a far more complicated seeding pot process) into groups of 4 (6 fixtures, playing everyone else in the group home and away) with the top 2 from each group to go into the Europa League Last 32 along with the 8 CL Group stage 3rd place teams.

Is the Third Qualifying round drawn on a regional basis at all?

Only in the sense that you can't draw anyone from your own country. We could easily end up in Azerbaijan or Israel (Ironi Kiryat Shmona are in 3rd Qualifying Round with a low coefficient). Unlikely an Azeri team (Gabala or Neftchi Baku, as it happens) would get that far though, just as likely to be playing Airbus UK / Newtown / Bala from Wales who also start in 1st Qualifying Round.

To give you some idea of the standard of some of those clubs, the Welsh Premier League sides don't usually get to the 2nd Qualifying Round, and I'm comfortable in saying they're around bottom half Conference South standard.

if we are unseeded. we could get Dortmund in the qualifiers.....then again, doubt they would be in the qualifiers..(have no idea how it works BTW)

We won't in the 3rd Qualifying Round, which is the point Dortmund would enter if they don't win the DFB Pokal. We would also be seeded at that point.

There is the possibility we could draw them in the next round IF we both get through AND there are a lot of CL drop-ins who have better coefficients along with a lot of survivors which already had better coefficients. But they can also go straight to the Group Stages if they win the Pokal (German Cup).

"Either Schalke 04 or Borussia Dortmund will enter the group stage instead of the third qualifying round. Schalke 04 will enter the group stage if Wolfsburg win the 2014–15 DFB-Pokal. Borussia Dortmund will enter the group stage if they win the cup."

arsenal better hand the villa arsehole to tactics tim at the weekend.

surely wlacott will start. Look how we beat villa, pace pace and pace upfront. Villa are dreadfully slow at the back

I somehow doubt Sherwood will make the mistake of playing that defence on the halfway line again, though if he's reading this, it would be a REALLY GOOD IDEA.

Draw for 3QR is 17th July, first leg is 30th July, that would be REALLY pushing it. :o

Though actually, I've had a quick look, and they can do turnaround for a Russian visa next working day if you pay them enough... although the £100 for the visa itself, plus additional sums for delivery, passport return and need to actually visit the embassy to provide biometric information seem to be a tad tricky.

Thanks for all the research The9; think I'll just wait for the draw and see, but sod £100 for a visa and expensive flights. I'm hoping more for somewhere like Dudelange or Differdange, jump on the ferry and stock up on Belgian beers on the way home...

Based on the assumption that Arsenal actually win.

Very good info The9, thanks for that.

Another reason why the EL is good for us is to boost our coefficient rating......as for example, if we did go straight into the Top 4 this season and got to play the qualifier tie, we would be up against a European mega-power. So if we can just bide our trade in the EL for a few seasons, boost our coefficient and we'll be in a better position to have a crack higher up. (Obviously, come on Arsenal..!)

If we did get into the Groups, we'd be in Pot 4, so potentially a very tough group to get out of as well. When you look at the EL and the teams in it, you do feel that the CL this season would have been way too much way too soon. We'd have been bumped right out of it.

top 4/champions league is now seeded on where you finish in the league. I am sure I have read somewhere

They've changed it so the top seeds are the reigning champions and the top 7 countries' national champions (the team with the next best coefficient will be added to the top seeded pot as the winners will already be one of the national champions) and then the remaining pots are by coefficient as the whole thing used to be. You still can't draw someone from the same country in the group though.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/29562047

http://www.uefa.com/uefachampionsleague/news/newsid=2236360.html

"A significant change in the regulations concerns the seedings for the group stage draw on 28 August. Previously, the pots were ordered purely by the coefficients of the competing clubs. Now, the top pot will be formed by the champions of the top seven associations – that is, Spain, England, Germany, Italy, Portugal, France and Russia – plus the UEFA Champions League title holders."

So S-Clarke's point about us needing to get our coefficient up still stands, unless of course we win the Premier League. :D

I see West Ham are through to Europa via fair play, meaning the season will start for them on July 2nd! The more I learn about this competition the more I think we'll have dodged a bullet if Villa win the cup!

If we qualify, I hope we go for it, but I'm right behind Les's hint that we'll field more youngsters than we would in league games, at least in the early stages. Far too risky with a small squad otherwise.

Why is it a problem for us that a different team in the same competition has to play 4 more matches than we do if we qualify for it?

Basically both the Luxembourg sides you mentioned start in Qualfying Round 1 with lots of other smaller countries' runners-up (and the Fair Play winners), and Saints wouldn't start til the 3rd Qualifying Round, so for us to play them they'd have to win through 2 rounds - my calculations suggest we'd be seeded in 3QR and based on coefficient the Luxies wouldn't so there would then be a chance of drawing them.

It's straight two-legged knockouts until the Group Stage itself (with away goals counting) so at least that bit is straightforward.

I've already done a few of those grounds above, think my choice in the 3rd Qualifying round would be Skonto Riga for the Pahars connections (plus top trip) or Shamrock Rovers or St Patricks over in Ireland, or Inverness Caledonian Thistle - would be a dream for a half & half scarf collector like myself

I've been to one. West Ham. :)

It's a toss up between going to one of the easy to get to places early on (Belgium/Lux/NL) or hope that we get through and get a reasonable tie (in terms of location and team) later on. I fancy Genoa/Sampdoria as I could line up a place to stay there. As for the rest, well, most cities are within 200 miles of a Ryanair airport!;-)

Seeing as the "European Tour" thread got inexplicably locked for some petty waahing which mods could have just deleted, probably best to keep the Europa info in one place.

Saints coefficient confirmed as 16.078 (not quite 17 but not a bad guess ;) ).

We will be seeded in the 3rd Qualifying Round, and play one of the teams with the 29 lowest coefficients in that round.

We probably won't be seeded in the Play-Off round because of the teams dropping in from the Champions League 3Q and the fact that most likely the other seeded teams will have progressed from the EL 3Q and now there are only around half as many sides (exact numbers above). This means we'll miss the top clubs in 3Q but could get one in Play Off round.

Since last posting on this thread I've noticed that the 3Q Draw (17th July) takes place BEFORE the second leg of the 2Q round (23rd July), so whilst we'll be drawn against "either/or" a pairing from the 2Q round, that's really not that helpful in booking travel. Though if someone is 6 goals up in the first leg...

We will at least know who's home and away on which dates then, as they'll be drawn at the same time as the teams. Unless they change it from last year. :)

Yeah, I noticed the same over the weekend re 2nd round, 2nd leg date, so potentially less than a week's notice to sort out flights, hotels, visas being pretty much impossible. Stupid situation.

Also worked out that even seeded, there is no way of knowing if we'll be home or away on either date until the actuall draw has been made, no "seeded teams away first" policy.

There are currently only 15 teams with a higher coefficient than Saints, only 5 more yet to be decided, and there are 29 ties in the 3rd Qualifying Round, so we will be seeded on the 3rd Qualifying Round as we have to be one of the "top 29".

In the Play Off Round there will be 15 Champions League drop-outs added, and only 22 matches.

Unless the CL drop-ins are teams with low coefficients we're unlikely to be seeded:

There are 34 teams in CL 2Q and no more than 8 of those will have a higher coefficient than Saints - assuming they all make the CL 3Q, 8 of the teams who are added into CL 3QR will also have higher coefficients, which means most likely 16 of the teams in the Champions League 3QR will have better coefficients than Saints. In 15 matches.

However, it is of course the 15 LOSERS of that 3QR will drop into the EL Play Off Round, so you'd expect these to be the sides with lower ratings. There are, however, 18 teams with lower coefficients than Saints in the CL 3Q, so it is still possible that if the 15 losers are all the lowest coefficient sides we'd be seeded in PO round.

That would leave 15 CL drop-ins with lower co-efficients, there are also 13 teams in the EL 3Q with lower coefficients, and 22 of the 44 teams are to be seeded. In that scenario Saints would also be a seed in the Play Off round.

Every upset in the CL 3Q will reduce our chances of being seeded in the PO round and every upset in the EL 3Q (except Saints' match) will increase our chances. Six of those results going against coefficient would mean Saints wouldn't be seeded in Play-Off Round.

It's been locked due to Ludwig calling hypo a c*nt repeatedly, I assume. We need a Europa League sticky to stop people asking the same questions over and over, it's LONG overdue.

I saw the time you posted about the 2nd Q round second leg thing this morning, I realised it whilst drifting off to sleep last night, so you beat me by about 3 hours.

Was anticipating the draw would be home/away drawn alongside the draw as I remembered that from the past draws, but hadn't checked, so thanks for that too. :)

If you could not use the term "Champions League Play Offs", that would be helpful.

The teams you've listed are in the Champions League 3rd Qualfying Round - that's the round before the CL Play-Offs - no team in the CL Play-Off round will also be in the EL Play-Off round, but 15 teams from the CL 3Q will be in the EL Play-Off round.

I don't know about you but I fancy Young Boys.

So half those sides drop into our EL play off draw (if we get through our 3rd round qualifier)?

We'd still be seeded above the majority of those teams that are likely to lose I reckon.

Anyone know a list from the internet that show what countries you need to apply for a Visa for in order to visit there? (One that isn't completed on the plane and automatically processed when you arrive!).
Russia and Belarus definitely, but I'll see if I can find a comprehensive list.

It's Wiki and all a bit high level/general, but not a bad starter http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Visa_requirements_for_British_citizens#Visa_requirements_map

San Marino or Gibraltar would be excellent.

Not Israel, for the love of god...

No chance of either San Marino or Gibraltar sides getting through to play us I reckon.

Israel would be brilliant, apart from the short notice making it so tough to do.
