Reading v Villa final coming up. We finish 7th and miss out.

Bloody Reading our thorn in the side again? Surely not?

How did Ramsey not score?

Posted
arsenal doing their best to throw this away.

serves them right for not playing their best side in such a big game

But should still be good enough, to beat this lot!

hypothetical Question time!

We finish 7th- Arsenal lose today so the fa cup final will be Liverpool vs Reading

Who would you want to win? Liverpool win and we enter the qualification process for the europa league. hOWEVER, reading win, and we don't see lovren/lallana or rodgers win some silverware, but obviously, we don't get european football.

im torn.

I am not torn at all. I root for liverpool in that scenario. I want what is good for southampton.

Why deny the players on the current team a chance for European football because of petty grudges.

Ooh this is a strange one, want the obvious final to open up the chance of Europe, but spent a while working for the Reading Evening Post which was obviously big on Reading and Saturdays when I had to man the office till 2 o'clock and Reading were at home would get in for nowt and the ground was just round the corner, yep when everyone went "who the hell is Ian Branfoot!!??!!" I knew quite a bit about him. Saints fan is going come on Arsenal football romantic is pulling a bit for Reading.......... Sorry.

Reading win, we avoid Europe and hence have a better chance of staying up.

How on earth anyone is torn on something like is baffling the hell out of me.

European football would be something to look forward to all summer, a genuine achievement and a step forward for the club.

And you're "torn" about preferring to have a two minute chortle at the manager and players of another club who have nothing to do with us?

I'd happily see Liverpool win the cup 10 - nil if it got us what we want.

As painful as it is to find myself on Fry's side, he is right. How bitter are some of you if you would willingly throw away our second chance at European football in 3 decades, just to annoy the Scousers for a couple of days? I love watching the hilarious misfortunes of Rodgers, Lovren, Lallana et. al. as much as the next Saints fan but we come first surely. I'd even tolerate Pompey winning the cup if some perverse twist of fate gave Saints a trip to Europe.

Luckily it's immaterial now and I will happily watch a tearful Lallana clapping off the greatest fans in the world and kissing his badge after a 5-0 spanking by Arsenal.

Yeah, fortunately now I wont have to grit my teeth and root for Liverpool for the sake of European football.

a big thank you to Arsenal.

So if you get to write the history of Saints between 2014-16 you would rather devote eight or nine pages to the fact that Liverpool didn't win the FA Cup in 2015*, or would you rather write a chapter on our European campaign of 2015-16?

Or is the next Hagiology title going to be "Who The F# ck Is Laughing Now - A Southampton FC History Of Moments We Got To See Ex-Players Fail At Their New Clubs and Stuff"?

Yes, I agree with you. Finishing above Liverpool would be nice, though. Of course in this scenario

Liverpool would also go into the Europa Cup and we might actually end up being drawn against them in a later round. That's when we get our revenge. :)

I'm sure as hell rooting for Liverpool.

Despite the disappointment of today, a win tomorrow for the reds would all but guarantee Europe next season which is a real achievement

Then it would be our job to make sure we enter at the group stage by finishing 5th or 6th

And beat them in the final?

Agree. Agree. Agree. Agree.

I really wonder what the point of this is for some people. Success this year is bad because it might make next year harder. Success for other clubs is bad because some players on the other club used to play for us.

Do the math. Eight (or more) English clubs are going to qualify for Europe each year and we can only be one of them. We are just going to have to accept that some of our rivals will have success.

Don't be silly.

Today, and for today only you should be wanting a Pool win.

Getting more pleasure from another's disappointment over your own gains is not a good mindset to have.

Come on Brenda and the Pool team.

You'd rather gloat about Pool losing than have the chance to qualify for Europe?

Don't want Scousehampton to win the cup, and will be satisfied with Aresenal beating them in the final, but for those rooting for them to fail today, just bear in mind the reverse side of that is the c^nt Sherwood taking the accolades for Villa's turnaround in fortunes.

This is difficult. I am torn.

I don't want Liverpool to succeed. Not because of any vendetta but it might ever so slightly help persuade players see that no one who has left Southampton for Champions league football has ever truly fulfilled their potential apart from Gareth Bale and he didn't leave for a team in the Champions league.

Getting in to Europe would be success and I want that but I am desperate for us to win a major trophy and I know that we should be focusing on things we can win and that will be more difficult with the boring and tiring Europa League.

I think I'm more ambitious than those who want European football just so they can have a nice holiday.

But then again it is progress so I guess we just have to take it and see what happens.

I cannot understand how anyone can be torn on this?

And how is it just a nice holiday for the fans? This is an opportunity to progress the club, have some growth, attract some better players and improve the level of football we play at.

I don't know why anyone would give that up just to see 3 players, who were once here, fail at their current club. Who cares now? They've had **** seasons, it's fun watching them suffer (2 in particular), but not at the expense of us jacking in an opportunity - and that's what this is.

Anyway, it's kind of irrelevant now as Arsenal are in the final.

"Might slightly help" he says. Not sure that makes you "more ambitious" than other fans. Liverpool remain a far better bet for the CL than us whatever happens for the rest of the season.

Surely a European adventure to enjoy the adventure is ambition enough anyway. Certainly more ambitious than wanting to see players at another club not quite succeed as much as they could just for 10 seconds of gloating.

Indeed.

True Saints fans with "soul", like our club historian, seem to disagree with you though. Strange.

TBh my perfect scenario today would be:

City loose to the hammers (unlikely)

Spuds loose at a basically empty St James's (unlikely)

Smug Rodgers and his crew win. Lallana plays **** and Lovren too. Big Ballotelli wins the match with a tap-in late winner.

Grow the club? Like Fulham and Wigan you mean. Swansea and Everton? not really - which clubs have grown a a result of playing in the Europa League? Admit it it's just a jolly.

Swansea have grown, you cannot deny that. Bar this season, Everton have been a top 6 club most years - still very well placed and able to spunk £28m on a player. Wigan are a bit of a non-example really, they got into Europe through a cup final but they were **** - and that's why they fell away anyway

If you look at Fulham from the moment they qualified for Europe, they pushed on the next season and if I remember right - didn't they lose in the final of it? They had one of their most successful years on the back of getting into Europe.

It's not a jolly. Like a lot of fans, I'm not going to afford to going to every away game - but surly, you'd take pride in seeing us against the likes of Fiorentina, Sevila, Valencia, maybe Milan, Bayer etc.

I would.

Or, we could hope that we finish 8th so we don't have Europe to distract us next year, so we can...umm, avoid Europe again. Genius.

The CL expectiations are a little scewed in some fans eyes, even though we had somewhat of a chance early on...the squads were always going to Evan themselves out. Top 6 and Europa league is a MASSIVE achievement for our club, huge. With continued good management on and off the pitch it raises our profile all over the world.

For a club with ambitions it's one step on the road to progress.

And stop calling him surly ;)

Agree. Middlesbrough and Fulham both got to Europa finals. Who wouldn't want that for Saints?

Swansea and Everton have clearly grown with their European experiences as you say.

I think some can't quite reconcile themselves with the fact that we aren't on our way to the champions league and more than likely never, ever will be.

So let's enjoy what we do achieve, because it's brilliant.

I just want an Arsenal V Liverpool final.

Arsenal win it......Lovren and Lallana will be gutted they didn't. No one remembers the losers.

We then obtain a European adventure. Hopefully.

Not a fan of the Europa but bloody hell what else are we realistically going to aim for.

The Champs league, well....who knows.

Maintain premier lge status was our aim.....we surpassed that ambition by far.

Plus we're more likely to finish above them if they're in the cup final . Top 4's gone so any slight knocks they'll leave people out and players may try and protect themselves .

Only downside is the Stevie G love in and Brenda's smug arrogance
