How many penalties should a team get per season?

Chelsea's is abnormally low apparently (I didn't realise there was a quota) it seems seven is a good average for a big club. Saints related in that two of the examples they give as penalties not given are in both games against saints.

Chelsea say the number of penalties they have been awarded in the Premier League this season seems "abnormally low" compared to other years.

We've only had two as well, don't hear us b*tching about it.

Exactly. Chelsea really need to get over themselves. Pretty desperate using their official site for propaganda purposes with the whole "hard done by" act regarding penalties. Horrible club, will seek out any means whatsoever to try and gain advantages

Easy one to sort out. All teams get say 15 for the season. In the last game the ref must give each team the amount of pens to get up to 15 for the season.

What if they've had over 15? Do the opposition get extras? What if both teams have had over 15?

Think it through man, you're talking nonsense!

And if you reach your quota early, no more penalties for any reason after that, for the rest of the season! That would muck up Man Utd & Liverpool's plans somewhat!

I imagine every club in the league could point out at least half a dozen 'obvious penalties' they should have had, but didn't.

Would've

Could've

Should've

Didn't!

From then on, those clubs get direct free kicks in the box wherever the offence was committed.

The defensive wall all stood in the goalmouth. Brilliant.

a lot depends on style of play.

Similar to basketball, you are going to go to the free throw line a lot more if you are aggressive and taking the ball to the hoop. Does your style of play involve taking a lot of jump shots from the 3 point line? You aren't going to get many trips to the free throw line playing that way.

As said above once at 15 you get no more even if Rooney gets decapitated in the box it's just a free kick.

Level playing field or what?

Maybe Chelsea need to look at their technique in the opposition box.

Clearly their 'falling over' isn't convincing enough. Perhaps that's what Jose was actually complaining about. Need to hire a better 'in the box' coach.

All very clever from Mourinho, suggesting that they have been discriminated against by referees, in the faint possibility that some referees will be influenced in some way to award them one or two more. As 5string says, could it be that their players have gained a reputation as diving cheats, especially the likes of Ivanovic, so that even if the penalty is justified, it is not given?

Two teams who have only been awarded 2 penalties and they are the two with the best defences in the division. Southampton and Chelsea don't get awarded many, but neither do they have many awarded against them. We would almost certainly be awarded more if our players dived more, or surrounded the referee, but in many ways I'm proud that our team don't do that; although we are as justified as Mourinho to claim a bias against us, at least we can claim some moral high ground that Chelsea cannot.

You might expect that a better defence would allow the opposition fewer touches in their penalty area and therefore would concede fewer penalties.

Sane comments from a ref. but what about the " handball in the penalty area "?, I always think it's unjust for someone to play a ball onto someone's arm from 3 feet away, and claim a penalty.....

This is a brilliant idea. Last day of the season would become like an episode of the chuckle brothers

That was a Chelsea party piece playing for the arm not the goal, Super Frank did it to us in the Cup a couple of seasons back Mike Dean referee we were losing already Lampard takes aim at our players arm as if he had missed all you would have heard was "do-do-da-do effin useless" from row Z of the Northam where the ball landed: Dean without even a thought pointed straight to the spot and Super Franks extraordinary scoring feats just carried on tallying up.

We have only had two all season (and only scored one!) but I can think of several we should have had including at least two against Liverpool at home.

The most blatant one not given was vs Everton when Long was booted 10 foot in the air (although we did score from the incorrectly given corner).

Maybe it can be like the appeal system used in tennis and American football. Every manager gets 15 penalties to use every season and gets to decide when they take them. 1-0 down to Man Utd at Old Trafford with a minute to go? We'll take a penalty ref. Need to swing your goal difference to make the CL spots? We'll take five. Some teams might use all 15 in one match.

I think I'll write to the FA ...
