pap Posted 16 March, 2015 Share Posted 16 March, 2015 Gus Poyet, mastermind of the 8-0 defeat against the mighty Southampton and one-time adversary of Nigel Adkins, has been sacked. Floral tributes, etc. http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/31902933
Wiggles31 Posted 16 March, 2015 Share Posted 16 March, 2015 Shame, was hoping he'd be in charge for our visit. Saw their starting line up against Villa which was frankly dreadful. They seem to be a very sour team and one I'm not sure will have a flurry of decent applicants.
Hatch Posted 16 March, 2015 Share Posted 16 March, 2015 being 4-0 down at home to Villa at half time , you deserve to be shot , not sacked.
hasper57saint Posted 16 March, 2015 Share Posted 16 March, 2015 I hope Nigel Adkins isn't tempted. It's a poisoned chalice for any manager.
KelvinsRightGlove Posted 16 March, 2015 Share Posted 16 March, 2015 There seems to be something rotten at the core of that club. Keane, Bruce, O'Neil, Di Canio (granted he was a header) are all big characters that have been worn down there. Bruce and O'Neil aren't bad managers, and both have struggled. The recruitment has been shocking for a while, there seems to be a bad atmosphere from the club. Hard to see what the quick fix there is, or who can help them. I'd be seriously worried about this season if I was a Sunderland fan at the minute.
S-Clarke Posted 16 March, 2015 Share Posted 16 March, 2015 Huge gamble. Not sure what sort of reaction they expect, and how many games will a new manager have anyway? As said above, the club is rotten to the core. Every manager they have seems to fail there, and there becomes a point where you have to look beyond the manager....the club needs to fall down to L1 like us, be stripped bare and started again. Totally gutless, don't work hard enough and have survived a succession of decent managers.

But the board probably are watching events at villa and thinking a change of manager can save them to?
angelman Posted 16 March, 2015 Share Posted 16 March, 2015 Initially I thought that it was a bad decision to change this late in the day. But, if the players have completely given up as they did vs Villa, then is there any point sticking with him? To be honest, Short should have sacked him after the 8-0 we gave them and where their players just threw in the towel.
Redslo Posted 16 March, 2015 Share Posted 16 March, 2015 The turning point for Sunderland was the Darren Bent transfer in January 2011. They were doing quote well then, but nothing has gone right since. They should not have given in to pressure to transfer their primary striker at the very end of the January transfer window when there was no ability to replace him. In fairness, they got an obscenely good price for Bent.

Can imagine that Wes Brown and John O'Shea are on £60k per week despite both being worse than gardos or fonte! (I hope theyre not reading this to give their agent ideas!) stockportsaint Posted 16 March, 2015 Share Posted 16 March, 2015 Shame, was hoping he'd be in charge for our visit. My first thoughts too. If he'd stayed they might have been down by the time we played them. Hope they go for someone soon so the honeymoon effect has worn off by the time they play us. Think Poyet could now be a busted flush - left Brighton after the dressing room turd incident having missed out in the playoffs, then a frankly underwhelming stint at Soonland. 4 wins all season, Christ can you imagine what this board would be like? Bucks Saint Posted 16 March, 2015 Share Posted 16 March, 2015 Did not realise that they had only won 4! Burnley have won 5 with a fraction of their resources and experienced players. Think we know whether Gus can keep up.
